Aftermarket Tweeters...

Anyone have experience with adding aftermarket tweeters to a BD w/ stock tweeters? Can I just remove the stock ones and mount the new ones in place fairly easily and leave the stock unplugged, still utilizing the factory cover?

If that isn't possible will the blank plates out of a L or LS fit in the same spot and mount the tweeter to them?

If you get aftermarket tweeters, you may want to check up on how big they are so they will fit, tweeters range from 1/2" to 1 1/2" in diameter. Also, they'll come with "passive crossovers" which you'll want to utilize to get the best out of your tweeters

I slipped some JLAudio tweeters in there. Same mounting, easy as cake to do. They sound flippin' sweet too!

This page has the dimesions of the tweeter, I'm not experienced enough to 100% decipher them.

edit: hahaha, i can READ the the measurements, just not sure what they're describing!

How big is the stock tweeter?

1" in diameter, I think. But the housing can handle larger and smaller, it's all about the mounting.

From the specs, it looks like these will fit. The OEM's I have are a hair over 1 1/4 (34mm) in diameter and .687 deep. It looks like the BA's you are lookin at are permenantly mounted in their housing - if not, they would fit if so, probably not. It's no big deal anyhow, just mount them as warrior showed, it allows you to get the right soundstage by adjusting the direction they play at - it actually is better than stock mounting. Also, as he said, use the crossovers that come with the speakers instead of the factory wiring - it isn't tuned properly to take advantage of the BA's awesome sound, you will be throwing away money using the factory wiring. If you need the stock trim plates (flat) to mount the tweeters to (they just screw on to the plate), I could drop a pair off to you somewhere in brat if you want. Let me know.

it sounds like i just might go with the comps. i'll try and get the blank plates from the donor leg by my garage. i won't even mess with the stock housings, that is a good point about the soundstage. i didn't really plan on using the stock wiring, i figure it wouldn't sufficiantly handle the power.

Thanks for all the help guys, when I get the comps i'll do a DIY. I will actually be doing A LOT of DIY's this winter.

The BA's you are looking at are great speakers, I know a guy that has a set in his wrx- they rock with just the factory upgraded system in it - if you are driving them with a decent amp, they are killer. Let me know if you need the plates, I got spares you can have.

sweet, thanks, i might take up that offer if i f-up the ones i have.

this is the receiver that will power them, unless i have the extra $ then i'll get a 4 channel amp.

I replaced mine and it sounds a million times better. The stock tweets are too small and not very loud. The tweets I installed were about 40mm arround and an inch or so tall. I had to remove some of the plastic prongs that stick up off the stock tweeters back plate to get it in, and then glued it in place.

Also get rid of the stock capacitor, as it is set too high. If you are adding tweeters that arent part of a component set, but a new capacitor.
