Car: 98 BD 2.5GT 4EAT
Problem: bad smelling cloth (kind of an earthy/moldy smell)
Scenario: I've recently transported some stuff in the back seats of my BD legacy, and before that my wife, a friend and I went to a festival (and came back home muddy).
I've now got something of an earthy smell, resembling soil or wet dirt. How hard do I have to work to get that out if I start now? I've been using Febreeze for stink control, but I want to make sure I enjoy my car, and this odor problem has got to go.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance for help...

When I bought my car, it had a smell of smoke and kind of like a old person smell. The only way I could find was to shampoo as much cloth as I could get to and use an air freshener at night with the windows down. I also tried spraying vodka inside the car and then letting it sit in the garage with the windows down for 1-2 days and that worked wonders.

I hope it was cheap Vodka. I hate wasting good alcohol.

I was hungover and it was the cheapest of the cheap so I had no problem.

Steam clean and leave the car in a garage with the windows down and a dehumidifier on.
Add your brand of antibacterial spray to the steamer. Voila.

Armorall Carpet cleaner seems to work pretty well...

Thanks for all the suggestions... I may wind up going out to Wal-Mart tonight to buy some stuff to clean the inside of the car up.
I think I have rubbing alcohol at home... can that be safely used to de-stink as well?

Only use carpet cleaner if you're not going to steam clean. You run the risk of killing fibers.

While your at it, spray some lysol through the air vents (from the outside at the bottom of the windshield) Gets rid of any funky smell in your air system.

the best way to get any smell out of a car is the "Black Ice" sented little tree air freshener.. put in front of the A/C vent and put the HVAC on Blast. i bet you, mud will be the last thing you smell.. hahahah
