Yea, what the hell is this cause when I unplugged it, I got a check engine light and my engine died

(I know my engine bay is dirty, I'll be writing up a DIY on cleaning it with awesome close up pics.. aren't I such a nice guy  )

looks like it could b a knock sensor

hmm.. Mark say the thick hose beneath the plug that connects to it is the idle air bypass hose.. so maybe thats what that sensor is.. :?:

Just a guess here but wouldn't that be the idle control valve?

The knock sensor is on the block, thats not it.

Why are we just unplugging random sensors again?

lol.. I had a drone sound and I was trouble shooting  I fixed the drone sound, but I'm curious to know what that sensor is.. knowledge is power

Idle Air Control - Controls the amout of air that bypasses the throttle plate in order to control idle when the throttle plate is closed.

Do these ever fail? On my previous car (A DSM).. I went through four of them! And they aren't cheap!

They can be problematic on 1st gen subies...I don't know how much on newer subarus, because it might not be specific to BC/BJ/BF Legacys, but to higher mileage cars. I don't think it's that kind of failure problem Warrior.

It's not so much that they go "bad" all that often but they do get dirty and can use a good cleaning every, say, 30-40 thousand miles. SeaFoam works wonders.

They can actually go bad though too.

it's not arrogance, it's quality control. If you don't have any clue about what you're posting about, don't post, posting something totaly wrong or guessing at something will only confuses people. The person who asked the question obviously didn't know, so they are likely to belive anything that someone else posts, therfore only propogating the confustion and no one learns anything, the blind leading the blind is entirely unproductive.

There was only one wrong guess, and Huffer is not one of said "blind" normally, and he didn't claim 100% truth, he guessed.

so next time you correct someone, be more civil. Thanks.

im throwing a CEL code P0507 (idle control system RPM high) , would this code be a cause of a bad IAC?if not what else could be cosing this CEL?these are the the steps i figure ill go through before replacing the IAC if you have any other information please let me know.
1)check air intake system for vacuum or gasket leaks
2)check throttle cable for needed adjustment
3)check air by pass line for any foreign objects
4)replace IAC

A bad IAC would cause it to idle too low or to idle roughly/irregularly, so I'm going to say no.

what else could be causing this CEL?i do have an irregular stumble in the idle every once in a while , i thought it was a cylinder misfire before i scanned it so i replaced the plugs , wires , fuel filter , air filter and then erased the code by disconnecting the battery.after a couple of start up cycles the CEL kicked back on so i scanned it and came up with P0507.this is the link i found about P0507 code: codehttp://glasairproject.com/soobdocs/ ... /P0507.gif (codehttp://glasairproject.com/soobdocs/codediag/P0507.gif)

I'm new to Subies but good on most cars that I work on. I bought my daughter a 1995 Legacy Wagon to take back to Rochester NY for school. I live in southern Connecticut. Car ran well until the cold weather hit. She reports it runs poorly (shakes) once the cold weather hit but is just fine as soon as it warms up. I will be up there this weekend. Does anyone know if Subies have had cold issues (assume that the little guy shivers) or if the IAC has casused such an issue? I put in new plugs and wires, filters, timing belt and idlers before I sent her back to school. I have also learned that Mobile 1 and the cam/crank seals on a 150K engine can make a lot of seepage and smoke. I will be changing the seals at Christmas and going back to non-synthetic oil.... Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Shakes?

Sounds like plugs and plug wires need to be replaced.

heh, I need to stop posting at midnight!

Then I don't know, it's probably normal. I'm not sure what's up with all this crossposting though, I answered this question in another thread as well...
