View Full Version : Need opinions: Am I too tall for WRX seats in my BD?

I have an amazing oppurtunity to buy some '04 all black WRX seats for my 95 BD L. A friend I work with is willing to sell them dirt cheap. (Perfect condition well under $300). Heres the dilemma, I hear these sit a lot higher than my broken down, old L seats.

I am 6'02" and weigh about 175lbs. I have the seat almost all the way back right now, I think one notch forward from the last setting or "click".

Are my knees going to bash into the steering wheel if I install these seats? It seems like I have plenty of headroom as is at the moment. I dont want it to become a royal PIA to do heel-toe, or even just swithing my right foot from the accelerator to the brake!

I know there are several write ups on this, but I just want a solid answer like "too tall" or, "you'll be fine and enjoy the extra lumbar, and lateral the rex seats offer." If these wont work for me, what would any of you recommend? I can't break the bank on just seats.

Thanks for any reply in advance.

you may not bash your knees but you may hit your heat... i am 6'3" and i hit my head with the stock seats... I have some stock black leather seats from my 99 bd...

You could always try to get some new seat brackets made if you know anyone who welds.

Do you have the backseats and leather doorcard inserts as well? That'd be a really classy upgrade for my ride. Shipping would be pretty expensive I'd think from Florida to Oregon. Do you have a price in mind? I love the idea but I'd prolly have to wait on it until I get some more cash flowing in.

I dont know anyone who welds unfortunately. Is is the seat bracket that is higher, or is the bottom cushion just that much thicker & taller?

Thanks for both your replies.

i had jdm wrx seats, and had to sit way back, and slide my leg under the wheel. i'm 6'3". at least the usdm's you'll get are height adjustable.

I'm 6ft and I have 06 STi seats in my 98 Wagon...I hate it...I sit way too high...I don't know if Legacy seats usually sit highter than other cars. I assume they do being more of a sedan family car vs. a more sporty compact. I personally would LOOOVE to have the stock Leathers (black) restiched in red to match my boot and knob. Did they make leather seats for the back seat of a wagon?

Well if you sit way too high in STi seats, I'm sure these WRX seats aren't going to work out for me. I guess that WRX seats are out of the question. Once I muster a bunch of money down the road I'll look to upgrade to something really really nice, maybe Recaro SRD's, or a pair of Brides.

To answer your question about rear leathers in a wagon, I'm 100% sure they did, although I bet they are somewhat of a rare item to be found.

VR4ownzU- No, stock Legacy seats are pretty low, but the Impreza ones that bolt in are really high in a Legacy.

Peugoby-how much did the guy want for the WRX seats?

He would of sold them to me for around $260-275ish. He doesn't have the internet, and his english skills could be improved.

I wasn't trying to rip on my own friend (the seller). Taking that bit of content out of the original sentence, also states he doesn't have access to the internet, which was my main point.
-I Did not mean to come across racist or bashing on people who don't have perfect english speaking skills.
-I am in no way racist, or discriminate if thats what you are intending to try and point out. This is completely off topic now but I'm a liberal and have a very diverse group of friends.

i didn't mean for it to sound offensive or accusing or anything, maybe i just didn't word it right, not as easy to show expression though words on a screen. i just thought it was funny you put that bit of info in there.

no hard feelings.

With the recaros and what not i don't think they make a legacy specific bracket. you can us one for a GC8, but then you be back to square one, too tall. maybe you can make your own?

I think it was discussed somewhere else on here, but Sybir said that wedge brackets worked for his recaros.

Cool, I just wanted to clear the air on my thoughts.

Its a tough choice with the seats. I could still buy these all black WRX's for cheap w/ the height adjustment and just hope it'll work out for me... Or save up for a while longer, get black recaros and get those brackets that Wiscon_Mark was talking about.
I'm not going to stress it though, putting money into the suspension+wheels is most important to me at the moment.

Yesterday I test fitted the seats with my friend to see if I'd fit and like the driving postion.

I am really pleased with them and ended up buying them. I have the height adjuster set all the way down, the seat all the way back, and somewhat tilted.. Not like Fat Joe Lean Back stylz, just to were its comfy. They are soo comfortable! This is bar none, the best upgrade my legacy has seen.
I'd be even happier if the seat was maybe just an inch lower but the position is not bothersom at all. The driving position for me is quite enjoyable. Lateral support is money!

I'd like to find some gray/black cloth rear seats from a GT sedan, or maybe an Outback SUS? I swear I've seen these before. I'd go with WRX rears, but I love how the rear seats go down, makes the car a lot more usefull. If anyone knows where I could find these it'd be greatly appreciated.

I'll post some interior pics once the terential downpoar (which has lasted a week) ends.

Mark, its tough to say if you would like the heigth of the WRX seats. For me, the position is great, but I could see some people 6'+ thinking you sit too tall.

It helps if the seller will let you try 'em out in your car. The only real way to tell is sitting and driving with the seats installed.

Wiscon_Mark
11-09-2006, 09:05 PM
okay. Would you describe yourself as "all legs" or anything like that? My upper body isn't terribly large, I'd probably be more tall in the legs department, so I could probably get away with it.

But I really do like the seating position in my Legacy.

My stock seats don't have a height adjustment, so i don't know what the "tallest" setting would be...

Alright noobs. I went out and took a few measurements of my WRX seats. The seat is at its lowest position. The backrest is two notches back. The steering wheel is at its highest position (although I usually keep it down another inch)

I'm 68" tall and I have about 3-4" above my head. The only thing that impedes me from getting out is the side bolsters, so the steering wheel isn't in my way. I didn't measure its front to back travel cause if you need it all the way back, you probably cant fit height wise anyway!

I'll have to take some body measurements for myself...

It is so choice. If you have the means (to fit), I highly recommend picking one up.

The seating position (while higher) is much nicer than my stock seats. Much more comfortable too. The legacy seats don't really have your upper legs tilted (more flat) which means your legs are closer to the wheel, but its nicer. Also I'm leaning back a bit so I'm not as close to the roof as i would be sitting straight up

I suggest making some measurements of your seat and of yourself to compare

lol nice Ferris Bueller reference.

Mark, I'm just over 6'2", and wear 34 length pants. I have what I'd consider some long Dutch legs. Heres a picture of me next to a 5 door R32 in Amsterdam. I hope that is of some help.

I chatted with Jonathan at Worldone. He seems to believe the WRX and STI seats can be easily modded to sit lower in the car.

I'm not all that tall, but I don't like the raised height. I'll see if I can wring some more information out of him on how to mod the seat.

me too, I can deal with the lack of headroom unless I'm wearing a helmet (at which point it's really just annoying)

may be a non-issue for the sunroofless cars.

Since this is the main WRX seat thread, Ill post these pictures showing the fitment in here

They seem fine in my car. They're not as wide as the stock seats but I don't really notice any difference (other than the height). The only problem is with the back seat

Theres about a 1" gap between the rear window deck and the seat, but its not very noticable. The gap by the rear shock mounts is easily visible through the rear triangle window. I have it partially covered up with the seatbelts for now.

I've sat in a few cars, and I'm just used to the Legacy seat driving position.

I haven't had a chance to head down to worldone to chat (but I need to pick up some of my parts so it will be soon).

I found some information in a thread. I gues HKS Kansai makes some brackets that will lower the seats, but I don't have a confirmation for sure if it will work with US seats. JDM Sti seats this bracket will work. US seats might take some modification.

http://www.japanparts.com/db/partslist. ... r=&volkey= (http://www.japanparts.com/db/partslist.php?dealer=1&car=3&middlesmall=2%3A17&maker=&volkey=)

Worth a try, and with this information, I might look into getting some now. The raised height makes me feel like I'm driving a bus.

Ouch those HKS seat rails are over $200. You can pick up WRX seats for that much.

The driving position doesnt bother me a bit. I'm 6'02" and fit fine. I have the steering wheel pretty low too.

Its odd sometimes when I get into another car. Today I was driving a BMW E30 325is and I felt like I was sitting on the floor! It was almost too low after being in the Legacy.

Kraziken
03-12-2007, 04:41 PM
I don't think STI seats are around $200 used though.

The STI seats are a nice compromise, if you want something in a sport seat, but you still want a recline function.

I don't think I could stand having race buckets in my daily driver.

I like the lower leg position of the stock Leg seats, I'm used to my old RX-7 and CRX. In those cars, your ass is on the floor. Legs straight out in front of you, hardly any knee bends.

EDIT: Damn just looked at your cardomain and see your STi swapped, get those seats man!!!

Truth, STi seats are nowhere near $200, but I said WRX. I have the rex seats similar in form to the STi's (mine came out of an '05), but they are all black. I have the older style WRX seats w/ the removable headrest in my other Legacy though (like the ones Shazapple posted pictures of.) Both are nice & comfortable. If it was me, I wouldn't fork over the extra cash for STi seats over the rex seats + the extra $ for those seat brackets, but thats just my own opinion. It'd love to have them though dont get me wrong!

The STi seats are pretty nice, but I think if I was spending that much money I'd go for a set of Recardo SRD's (my favorite seats) or maybe a pair of Brides.

Yes, I drove my BK wagon all the way to Ithaca, New York this past winter in '02 WRX seats! They are light years better to sit in for hours on end than the stock Legacy seats. The lumbar support is much better in the WRX seats, especially when sitting up straight.

Kraziken

For guys that think they might want to go to the track. Even though I'm not the tallest guy in the world (5'9") the lower Legacy seats really help when you have a helmet strapped on.

I didn't hit my head on the roof, but as a test I raised my Legacy seats slightly and the helmet did hit. I normally drive with the Legacy seats in the lowest position.
