I'm really sad... After hearing what a WRX exhaust sounded like on the legacy, I quickly pounced on a used WRX catback. And now, my car is quiet inside and outside, and with no boxer rumble any longer. Video clips will be up shortly :cry: My torque is back though, so maybe that performance justifies the lack of sound...

Did you remove any of the baffle inside the can first?
Is it an 05 WRX or 04?

Sounds like legacy4ever has a Borla? Did l4ever specify which gen WRX muffer he has?

This makes me think twice about installing my STi muffler. It sounds nice idle but I don't know if it's worth the $120 for the muffler and then the $100-$120 for installation. :-?

02 WRX muffler =/= STi muffler, people.

I'm not sure why it sounds so different, PWT, Legacy4ever only as an N/A EJ20 I think.

Yeah, you would think that a lower displacement motor would sound weaker through the same exhaust. I have a feeling that the burble is being drowned out by the intake. Hopefully I can get a snorkus from The Korean or a junkyard, and see if that changes things for the better.

Could be, I know the stromoung dual tip looks similar. Stromoung definately puts out the nicest exhaust notes. Eh, whatever, I've spent the money for this exhaust, so I'm going to keep it.

The car definately *feels* better. Power is smoother at the lower RPMs, and it feels like it pulls just a little harder higher up. Almost like with the previous exhaust I'd get bog at the begining, and then now, thats gone and it has a smoother power delivery up top as well, making it feel overall better. I have to figure out if I have single or dual port headers next. :twisted:

congrats to your new muffler PWT! Don't be sad, it sounds not so bad! actually it sounds great sporty :smile: and performance gains are more important imo than sound gains, arent they? :wink: nice vids btw!

why it sounds so different? I don't know! you got custom made 2 1/4" exhaust w/o resonator? maybe that's the reason. I think the stock headers are also different in BD than in earlier models.

Regarding my configuration: it's totally stock except the rear muffler. The muffler comes from '96 or '98 WRX, I don't remember I put it 3 year ago. It's also totally stock WRX muffler, no aftermarket or mod.

I also have no snorkus, if it has any meaning.

Hmmm... strange. I have a resonator on mine. It is actually the entire WRX section from the cats back. The piping is 2.25" and its mandrel bent, so I saw no reason not to use it. It does sound decent, I guess I was expecting just a little burble. Its very strange that I don't have that, since others with WRX mufflers have said it does make the sound. I am reinstalling a snorkus to see if it helps the sound or not.

Well, here's a new video, and some new thoughts. Apparently it's all about where the observer is. From in front of the car, you will hear the intake over the burble. From behind the car you get a growl/snarl. I had two different people rev the motor with me standing back behind the car. Its not loud, but I guess, sporty. Here's a new clip, though moclovflop will have to comment about whether the video does the exhaust justice or not, since he was standing there while I was filming. He also heard me as I was driving around/flooring it.

Sounds about right, actually a little more deep in person. And as I said when we were driving it sounded very very nice when you pulled away, sounds way better when actually under load. Probably not as deep as you may want, but good from what i heard.

Hey man, look on the bright side;

You can never have a too quiet exhaust, but you can have an exhaust that's too loud :D.

Add some borlas in there and it should make the burble more noticeable.

WRX's mufflers have a lot more baffling and insulation in there (there's an NASIOC post of someone dissecting the inside), so it stands to reason that it'll be quieter than the more open STi design.

Until 05, when the WRX muffler was the exact same thing as the STi muffler.
