Congrats to Sybir and his beautiful Outback for their win in the October 2006 SLi ROTM. It was a close win, seperated by only 4 votes. Good job to both entrants!

It's the roof rack that completes the look ;)

Nothing beats a full rack loadout on a serious-looking car. Makes it look that much more purposeful and mean. It also visually lowers the car, IMO. I've got all the junk off for commuting, but I love rolling around in this thing with a couple bikes or kayaks strapped to the top :D

Cos you know Anthony would install teh awesome engine in that wagon...as well as changeout the drivetrain.

That's the only thing missing from sybir's wagon...

Yep. It's still in the works down the road (I had an entire donor car for cheap sitting in my shop, but just didn't have the time and a reliable second car). I'm bummed it's not done already, as every other system on the car is ready for power, it's just the time and money factor, as if I was going to do it at this point I'd have to do an STi swap for it to feel worthwhile.

The STi (buying a friend's 05 as soon as I move back from the bay next summer) will give me something factory fast to do a few cosmetic and suspension mods to to be happy, then I'll look at what I want to do with this thing. I'm thinking about a cheap EJ20 swap with a peaky turbo like a 22 or PE1820 for that old-school "waitwaitwaitwaitwhoooooooosh" turbo feel; it'll never be faster than the STi, but one of those turbos will give me the boost I always wanted in the car, and just make it fun. Will be a cheap second car at that point that will be a fun showpiece as an old-school Subie done up right, like Anthony's.

Dude your car would be soo sweet with my entire drivetrain in it…

2.5l short block, cammed wrx heads, 20G/06 turbo, external wastegate, PPG 5-speed tranny, alky…. That wagon would whoop the majority of STi’s it encountered…

Yes it would. Your wagon is a good platform for an STi swap. It's actually lighter than an STi in stock form, although if you add the drivetrain w/ DCCD, it'd end up about the same.

Blahhhhhh STi this and STi that...

My 5sp WRX tranny is twice as strong as the stock 6sp box and quicker in most circumstances...

Aside from the front LSD (which can be added to 5sp), I don't see what all the hype is about with the 6sp box...

Especially for you sybir, would you rather run your autoxs constantly shifting from 1-2-3 or run the whole thing in 1-2..?

With the PPG gear-set I can run 43mph in first and 73mph in second at redline. That means on the autox course, you have a usable speed range of about 30~70mph in 2nd gear all between 3~7k rpm where you’ll be at full spool and under full power! And the same with 1st with a usable range of about 15~40mph of full power! Blah…6 gears who needs them..

PPG 5-speed gear ratio (http://mr2.phpwerx.net/turbocalc/gearratios.php?saved=H4sIAAAAAAAAAzWPWQ7DIAxE7%2BIDRCwhy3CYCLW04iOLgI9KUe4eXMiX53nkse1gcCb0oK93kazDiDNA2n9Pd3IiG6Aqym4aGfWDWjH2FUU3G0ZTUIBYDo9MkKAPV82pM9krlU0Uj3VZw0YtUAjB8jHcrxmjqsYEyvux1FNrfHFziJ4v1%2FxJmU3%2BlcO%2BtW1KGVYDyKWjOAwK1JsW%2BA5u9dnH1pflw%2Bu6ATeJj%2B4XAQAA)

It's a very nice transmission, with great diffs. Shifts much more smoothly than the 5MT. Obviously you can brag up your PPG gearset, but some people can't spring for that.

WRX 5MT + PPG gear-set cost
=
STi 6MT tranny cost

If you don't have to pay oodles of money to have your gearbox shipped to and from Andrewtech. You kinda have the advantage being so close to them ;)

But I would take the PPG over the STi gearset too.

I just like the STi diffs ;)
