Oil leak help - near oil pan.

My 99 2.5 GT Legacy has had a minor oil leak for the past few months. It unfortunately seems like it's getting a little worse now. I haven't had a chance yet to put the car up, but from crawling under there to look, it appears to be coming from just behind the oil pan, or perhaps from the oil pan itself.

Has anyone here had a leak in a similar area? What other seals and things should I check back there?

The head gaskets were replaced before I owned the car and a bone dry. I replaced the 4 cam seals and oil pump seal a few months ago, those are still dry.

I'm sure replacing the seal on the oil pan is a much easier process than whatever else is back there.

It's started to get oil on the exhaust and burn, which is bumming me out. Thanks for the help!

my car had what sounds like the same problem before i got it. and it had to be resealed. mine went to the extream and caught on fire though.

Have you checked the front crank seal? Itll cause oil to fly onto your oil pan and then fly onto your exhaust when you're driving.

Front crank seal? You're referring to one of the 5 seals on the front of the engine behind the timing belt, right? 4 cam seals and one around the oil pump in the center? Those are all good.

Anyone else had to reseal their oil pan before?

I think I'll be able to get it put up tonight or tomorrow once it stops raining.

The cam and crank seals are the most common. I doubt the oil pan is leaking, unless you dented or scraped it up badly.

What other seals are in the back of the engine? Something between the engine and the transmission perhaps? The oil isn't coming from anywhere in front of the oil pan.

There's a rear main cam seal, I believe.

My 1992 Legacy L drips from the drain plug a bit but only if the oil isn't changed often and a new crush washer isn't used. But you probably know better on these points anyway, I just thought I'd mention it just in case.

I finally got a chance to get it jacked up and crawl under there. Turns out, it's the right side valve cover. It was dripping and running down the frame to the lowest point, which was just behind the oil pan. Unfortunately since I'm moving on Sunday, I won't have a garage to work in anymore. I wonder how much it's going to cost to have a shop replace both valve covers. *sigh*
