Here's a picture of my rusty spot on the left side of the tailgate.

I'm planning on taking the "legacy L" thing off and sanding the rusty paint down and then repainting it. I have to paint, and some sealer for it, I'm just hoping that rust isn't coming from the inside of the car. What should I do with it?

I also plan on replacing the "Legacy L" part, what should I replace that with. The old logo is getting green. :help:

i would leave the badge off, but that's just my .02

I would leave it off and bond-o it in and repaint it, that's what i planning on doing

Okay, it does have 2 holes in the back of the legacy part, so I can't just leave it open....but what can I do to restore my 'green' legacy logo? should I paint it silver or something?
I'm going to try sanding sometime soon too. When I took the logo off, there was a whole ton of rust there, so I think its surface rust because the paint seal behind the logo is 11 years old, unlike the rest of it.

Wire wheel..bond-o....sand paper...primer....code matched Roo paint and then your badge of choice. You can use Silicone RTV to adhere your new badge to the rear of your vehicle. Epoxy works great too.

Make sure you cover your lights well or remove them before doing any of the above mntioned things...

Well, getting all the rust out was super tough, and then I happened upon a hole...where there was more rust! So that means its rusting from the inside and this is only a temporary fix.  I smoothed it out as much as possible before I gummed up every bit of 100 grit sandpaper, 300 grit sandpaper, and 450 grit that I had, and I primed it, painted it, waxed it, removed the wax, and painted some more. I also repainted/markered the legacy stuff (the legacy logo is made out of plastic, the 'L' is metal) and used silicone adhesive to put it back on.

I'm not entirely happy with the results, but it will stem the flow of rust for a while. The hole was miniscule and the metal wasn't rusted through except in that small spot.

You know what you should do is get yourself some air tools, a sander with some 100 grit or lower paper and after removing the taillamp above it so you dont scratch the plastic, grind it down to the metal, and then hit it up with POR 15 or any other rust treatment stuff that you prefer, crack open the bondo, spread it on nice and thick, then sand that down until its nice and smooth and even, then repaint it, clear coat it, and boom, problem solved, and it only cost you a small tub of bondo, a tube of rust treatment/preventative solution/paint, some sandpaper (and an air sander if you dont have one), some paint, and a couple hours on a weekend. My girlfriends brother went to school for body work, so he taught me some tricks of the trade to save some money if I get any dings or dents when I'm low on cash. Just be careful doing what you did, cause you don't want the rust to just get sealed in by the paint you put on...thats like stiching up a festering wound without cleaning out all the crap and taking antibiotics...you'll end up with gangrene or worse end up dying from it. You don't want the rust inside to spread, ultimately weakening the metal around it and one day caving into a nice big hole with more rust spots appearing out of no where. I've seen some old BF's with some crazy rust problems...looks like they had leprocy with huge gaping holes. Be smart!

I can't....there's another layer of rust that's a full 4 mm below the surface...its rusting from the inside...I'd have to sand the entire section off (all the way through) and then tach some sheetmetal back on....
No luck! That's okay, it will probably last for another year or so and by then, who knows what may go? It's been 11 years and 171k, something's bound to give.

 Don't talk like that  You need to learn how to use some tools and how to work the ole horsehair fiberflass boooooooy!!

Cut that rusted crap out and primer the exposed metal. WORK THE FIB GLASS!!!!

Go to wally world and get you a bucket of that stuff....you might even get high off it. J/K. You gotta learn sometime. It's in a blue metal tub with a picture of a boat on it. Pick up extra hardner while you are there too. Trust me on this.

okay, its starting to show through again....sooooo. I need a more permanent fix. I can use Fiberglass like deadlegs and Ryan suggested, and I have a dremel tool and I'm going to get a bit for the drill to take out the heavy stuff, but how do I go about filling it in? It sound like its gonna be super hard to make it smooth like there was never any rust there. And is this stuff liquid to begin with? What does hardener do (obviously it hardens, but is it something you mix w/ the fiberglass to make it harden?)? Someone walk me through this.

Please! :(
