Engine Oil?

I'm sure this has been covered a million times. What oil are you guys running in your BG/BD GTs? What viscosity/brand? How much of it will I need? Keep in mind my car has 81k and I don't think its ever had synthetic oil. I just daily driver my car and it doesn't see any abuse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

5W-30, Synthetic oil. Either Mobil1 or Castrol Syntech. The car has been running on synthetic since 12,000 miles.

I tried running 10w-30 but didn't like how it ran when the engine was cold (more hesitation than normal) and it didn't really make sense to do so since the final viscosity was the same, and the car gets run warm most of the time anyways.

You can run 5w30 year round. Full synth will be fine in your vehicle, fresh oil every 3-4000miles and you're good to go.

I've used Castrol Syntec, Syntec blend, Mobil 1. I now use Castrol GTX because it's not worth it for me to run full synth on close to 200k, and I change the oil right on 3000miles.

If your car is in good shape, you can run 4500+ miles easily on the same oil. Several local friends of mine had their synthetic oil examined by blackstone laboratories after 4500 miles and the oil analysis showed that it was still good. There are some on Nasioc who have run up to 8000 miles on the same oil with similar results from blackstone labs. 3000 miles is oil-industry hype- just because the oil is black doesn't mean that it has been completely broken down and cotaminated.

Not necessarily true. Are you specifically stating all oils, or just synthetics?

I had a UOA done on my oil awhile back - mineral/dino was definitely on the way out at 3500, synth was still ok, but starting to break down.

Nothing wrong with 3000/4000 mile changes - most people drive 15-20k a year so that's about 1 every season + refreshers prior to season.

Don't know if it's a good idea to switch to synthetic @ 81k miles though.

^^ usually no problem if the car has had regular oil changes up to that point. The seals usually only break down if the oil has "sat" for too long.

I always go over the 3k mile recommendation. I know the oil is old when the car ticks loudly. I only change it twice a year. Once for summer and once for winter. Of course I put the proper weight of oil in for the temperature so that helps (5w-30 is definitly not designed for the summer)

Seriously, I don't see how 10w-30 is better, the final weight of the oil is the same anyways, and the car (at least mine) runs rough on 10w because the oil doesn't get into the system quite as well (yes, even in summertime).

I use castrol GTX or something like that.
Its all about the viscocity. 10w30 is a bit thicker and stays on engine parts longer. 5w30 is pretty thin when the higher temperatures come around, but spreads out quicker when its cold.

Actually, 5w30 has an operating temp range that is wider than 10w40... therefore it's considered a truly all-season oil.

Yep. Gets working quicker than 10w.
