So today i found out what the smell was, it was indeed oil. Oil in the coolant reservoir and dirty and stinky.
But I'm not loosing coolant, the Temp. is normal.
Headgasket? It's at 113k.

well you are lucky. Most of the time these gaskets leak compression into the coolent. And the car over heats, sometimes grenades engines. So if you are having random over heat issues this could mean you have bad piston rings. Leaking oil into the comustion chamber and then into the coolent. Anyway yes its head gaskets regaurdless. I did it myself on my old 97 outback with all the sweet lil upgrades for 700 but yeah . good luck

nope, I've never seen or heard anything about it. I doubt that it would permanently fix your problem. If you haven't had a timing belt/water pump/thermostate/belt tensioner service yet (normally at 100k miles), now would be a good time. If you are in the market for some more power, you can do cams while the motor is out. It's also a good time to have the clutch and flywheel replaced.

+1. mine did that, and the cooling system would get airlocked, then the temp guage would shoot up, and the overflow would piss coolent all over the place. finally it caught me by surprise, heated up and warped the heads and split the block. it was great! no. no it wasn't.
however $2k later i have nice rebuilt DOHC heads, new headgasket and a phase II block.
not one of my leg's finest moments.

Im still running the car as it is. Until it gives up. Too much for headgasket repair. It'll be more than a weekend project for sure.
And I don't want to pay Subaru to do it :-?

No! You could make it a lot worse by driving it!

But what can I do? I don't have any other options.
And I don't have another vehicle to drive.

Friends, family have a spare car? rent a car? Carpool?
It's better than destroying the engine in a fashion that Blackgtbeauty described. That would go from pricey to downright expensive.

I own a 2002 LGT. It seems like i have the same probleM? I have about 54k on the odo. Normal Temperature everything working fine except the coolant reservoir tank has green/brown color liquid in it...I havent done the coolant flush over a yr... What do you guys think? is it HG? or Do i just need to flush radiator?
Wiscon_Mark

Flush it and see. If it were oil it'd probably be painfully obvious. Plus you'd probably run into overheating and the hot air in the cabin not working.
At 54k on a PhaseII Block, I doubt you'd have a headgasket unless you've been overheating it by driving it hard.

not to mention that a 2002 legacy with 54k miles should still have the headgasket under warranty!

If it starts to overheat, turn the interior heat to maximum. this will help draw heat off the cooling system and keep temperatures a little lower, not to mention making you sweat. take er' easy and the motor might be ok. My fiancee's dad drove his 97 OB with a blown head gasket for 6 months up and down a 5 mile hill every day of the week and it held up pretty well till he got his new motor (complete longblock).

+1
unless it gets airlocked, then it won't do a thing.

I think mine is getting airlocked, because one its very random and seldumly happens, two pressing on the gas makes it get hotter but not pressing it goes down very very slowly and three when I turn my car off wait about 10 seconds then start it again the tempurature drops down to normal and she's fine again

mine was the opposite, if i let it sit around it would do it most all the time.
after we changed the coolant and replaced the water pump and stuff i thought we fixed it when i was driving down the roadand it was fine, but on the way back it started up again. i was soo effing pissed i pulled into a road with a long straight away and hammered down revving the shit out of it and the temp went back down. then and only then (when i beat the crap out of it) did it not get airlocked. weird.

My locks when I beat the crap out of it for long periods of time. I can go weeks without it airlocking. If I drive normal no troubles.

Not really. When you rev the piss out of it, you're really working the water pump, and it's getting the coolant actually moving through the system, even if it has some air bubbles in it.

well i figured that out. that's why we changed the waterpump, thinking it wasn't pumping the coolant through the system. but once it got airlocked with the new pump, we came to the conclusion it was sucking air, originally hoping that the pump was the problem.

what's airlock?
Wiscon_Mark
12-05-2006, 11:30 AM
what's airlock?
When compression leaks into the coolant and air gets into the system. Air doesn't cool nearly as fast as water.

make sure you go to a mechanic you trust. i didnt, i went to the cheapest one, and my car is still messed up. i guess he messed with the lifters and never shimmed them properly. when i went back and asked him about it he said "the car was like that, likely damaged when the HG blew" ... anyways he refused to fix the mistake, and i am "a poor ass college student" and continue to drive it as it is. it only has to last 2 more years guys, wish me luck!
anyway, moral of story... do it yourself, or hire someone you know to do it. if you replace your clutch, get the flywheel cut, new belts, ect. ect. you should expect to pay about 1000, maybe a little more.

Boo.. I have a 99GT and its at 148,000 km.. I asked a few guys at the dealership where I bought the car and they said that 99's had recieved the fixed HG and I shouldn't worry too much.. by the way this dealership is amazing!
I'm still scared though

One question.
How it is for Subaru's head gasket to go bad so quickly or overmiles?
Is it the way the engine sits?
Wiscon_Mark
12-06-2006, 07:08 PM
Heating and cooling. It was a faulty design of the gasket, so it would tend to leak and then finally blow after a while. Wasn't a problem on any other engine (besides the EJ25) because they had different heads.

You know what really sucks, Subaru should have done a recall about this!

That'll be so many headgasket jobs to do! ...and loosing money too.
We'll, just an update, i still havent tackle the job yet. still running the car as it is. Trying out some new products for Headgasket sealants, which didnt work btw. Now im going to drain the coolant and clean it good with some BG products, after that we'll see how long it'll last :-?

12-26-2006, 08:22 AM
you may not want to clean the cooling system. Detergents might remove gunk that is helping seal the HG leak and you'd be worse off. However, doing a coolant change would not hurt.

probly wouldn't hurt it. But it'll all be flush this weekend or the next.
