View Full Version : Headers for a 98 LGT?

I got my LGT about a month ago, and I know the headers go out pretty easy in these. Mine has 166k miles, so I know it will need them soon, I'd rather just get new ones than wait for these to blow.

How much would I be looking at to buy new headers? What about installation. I helped my friend install headers on his Celica, think an Ametuer could do it on a 98 LGT 2.5?

Yeah, it's not hard on the EJ engines, however, headers aren't cheap.

Your cheapest set is going to be Borla, which is probably going to cost you 300+shipping.

^^ you need to check on ebay a bit more Mark...

a2rinc (sellerid) is selling Borla-ish knockoffs for $189 + $25 shipping.
Reason has a set. So do a few RS25 guys.

They're not perfect, but the price is - functional too.

As for durability of the stock headers - I think you're mistaken... I still have the stock ones @ 195k. sans heatshields though.

Yeah, stock headers are pretty decent, the heatshields are what goes on them.

Ebay knockoffs, yeah...forgot about those.

i have a set from the mentioned above a2rinc and i just put them on my car. They're great and half the price of the borlas. i also talked to the guy about a group buy or discounts offered. he said he only had a couple left and was expecting to get more soon but was going to sell them a little higher. However that was a couple months ago so im guessing the ones on there now are his "new order". I'll talk to him again about the discounts again because he said he'd definetly do it, just no at the time i first asked...

P.S- Final price for mine was $212 (buy-it now+ shipping)

i bought my ebay obx headers(borla replica's) for about 150-175. christmas is coming soon and that's where i found the deal. i think it was BIN(buy it now) for 150. iono long time but it's worth the money for the rumble!

The OBX headers are the COBB knockoffs IIRC, and equal length. Unless they are now making the Borla replicas??

I don't think the stock headers are going to die just because of age, they don't have any real problems.

Headers are just a little something extra you can do if you want for not much money.

There are borla replicas, I don't know if they're made by OBX, but it's possible.

i named it obx b/c i thought it was just a ebay brand. and yes, obx does make equal lengths also but alot of guys on rs25.com refer to obx borla replica's.

OBX = Cobb/Rallitek Replica
ebay/a2rinc = Borla replica

Yes, the Borla knock-offs I have, comparing to the originals that I ALSO had (don't ask lolol) were made of thicker piping; heck even the welds were a little nicer.

I have mine on for about 6k miles now, and they're fine (header wrapped though) and haven't thrown a code.

I'll be replacing them with TWE Equal lengths in a few weeks (waiting for the ceramic coater to finish them); hopefully I won't get the same problem a fellow BE/BH owner had when he put TWE's on his car (hitting the crossmember, had to machine spacers on the flanges to lower the header).

sounds like a stupid question. but do the after market headers make these puppies louder. im tryin to get a nice sound outta mine.

Sorta. There's a wee bit of insulation inside the heatshields on the stock header, so removing that adds some external noise (but not engine noise). The biggest thing aftermarket headers do is add a little power, and accentuate the flat four rumble/pulsing.
