manual transmission for an ej22

so. i have a 95 legacy lsi with an automatic tranny with 180000 miles on it
i really wanted a manual but the price was right on this car, does anyone know how hard a tranny swap is and how much money is involved. thanks

It's fairly involved. Generally, it's best to just trade the car for one with a manual transmission. Unless, of course, you want something that wasn't made, like an Outback sedan with a manual.....

Off the top of my head, you'll need to swap pedal assemblies, shifters, swap the flexplate for a flywheel, probably some mounts or bushings, and depending on hydraulic or cable clutch, get those parts in.

There could be some more, for instance I don't know if things like the axles and the starter are the same or not.

you'd need a new rear differential and drive shaft too. Probably axles as well.

its cheaper and easier to buy a car with a manual already in it.

my car wasnt made to be a manual but ive heard that i can use one from a legacy gt manual?

I have done a swap before but not on the Subaru. Like said above, it is generally easier to trade your car for a manual transmission model.

Expect to spend several hundred dollars on the project, mainly depending on the deal you get on parts. The only way something like this can begin to make sense is if you need to rebuild the automatic, than you can do a swap for around the same amount if you do the work yourself.

Here are standard things that go for transmission swaps in general.
You need:
manual transmission
Shifter assembly
Pedal assembly
Clutch master and slave and lines
Clutch kit
Flywheel and bolts
Transmission mounts
Rear differential
Something to wire in the reverse lights, neutral safety, cruise

You may need some or all of this
Drive shaft
Starter
Engine computer from a 5 speed car
Axles for the front
Floor pan modifications
Some interior trim to make it look nice

That is basically it, labor for a shop will be steap if they have not done this before, if they can even do this.
Think about it this way, can you sell your car, take that money plus atleast $1500 and buy the 5 speed car you want?? I think the labor to change cars is less than the work to swap.
If you think doing the swap will be fun and you know it will cost a good amount than go for it!
