Anyone know what happened?

about 2 hours ago i was making a sharp turn and i suddenly had a blowout!...i was going all of about 2mph when it happened....i couldnt see anything in the weheel well or near the suspension that could have punctured the tire....any ideas?

How long ago did you inflate your tires? What kind of tires do you have? Were you on clean cement? Have you found anything in your tire? Maybe one of these questions will help you. I doubt a spring punctured your tire, but I could be wrong. Good Luck!

it was on clean pavement and the puncture is on the back of the tire

theyre brigestone tires...i havent inflated them recently but they werent low or over inflated....soo wierd

Maybe you had tread speration and when you were going at normal speeds the air inside the tires heated up but when you slowed down it tried to cool down to fast and therefore blew out your tire.


I only say this because I had an old Izuzu that I was driving on the highway with no problems but when I got off and was driving about 10mph the tire blew HARD! It sounded like a shotgun went off under my hood and scared the crap out of me. I was thankful I wasn't going any faster as I wouldn't have been able to control it.

Yeah I agree with 2DL, instead of asking why it blew out you should be thankful it did at 2mph and not 80! Otherwise you'd be telling us this story after a short hospital stay and it would go more along the tune of "My legacy is totalled..."

Would you rather pay 150 bucks for a tire or a couple thousand for a hospital stay and another 5-6 grand to get another Legacy?? I'd go with the first choice anyday!

yea i definatly agree with yall....i think deadlegs is right about the tread separation....the tires should have been pretty hot before because i was puchin 110 down the intersate for abour 30 miles and then i went in to residential traffic.....btw that tire only costed me 50bucks to replace...so not too bad

advise to all....get the road hazard coverage on ur tires :-D

I assume your tires were rated well over 110 mph - how old / how much tread was left on those tires? 110 mph or not I don't think it's normal for there to be tread separation if the tire was on good condition. I and many others have done track days with multiple 20-minute 110 mph sessions and then I pull off the track and park the car. And I did this on the Bridgestone RE92 tires too.

First off doing 110 on a track with RE92's is crazy!! I've heard so many stories of kids buying WRX's and thinking their car is invincible, taking corners faster then the car can really do on the OEM rubber, and usually end up totalling them...which in one sense is good for us looking to do a swap if there isn't much front end damage... :twisted: ...I wouldn't trust those tires at 80 let alone at speed.

I'm only talking from experience. I used to work at an automotive customizing shop and we would get some very large blown tires in. I hate to bust you bubble but tread speration isn't always seen or felt. Most people associate tread seperation with a funny wobble and often a bubble in the tire. Some time TS happen from the inside out and doesn't give any of the tell tale signs that you would look for.

I am not at prodrives house nor am I a forensic scientist...but I can almost promise you it was tread seperation....unless PD hit a self destructing brick in the road.

Sounds like those stories are more about bad driving way beyond the limits of the car than tread separation - even the world's grippiest and safest tires can't fix that.

I guess I have a new understanding of what tread separation means - I've always thought that means the tread separated from the other parts of the tire and physically come off the wheel. But I can definitely relate to the situation of having a wobble and bubble in the tire - I autocrossed on some cheap General all-seasons once and completely ruined them to the point where there was a huge wobble in them. And I've seen that happen to tires even under normal driving - in fact the wobbly tire did eventually pop on my mom's Impreza after a while. Hmmm, that explains a lot. If that is tread separation that sounds rather unsafe and I probably should have thrown those tires away immediately upon observing the wobble, right?

Some place will call it belt and/or ply seperation. Sometimes it can be seen or felt (touch) but sometimes it is internal and that is the worse kind because you never know it's there.

We are just glad that prodrive is still here to talk about it.

well i found the problem....a bolt was sticking out of the fitting for the front swaybar....these bolts appeared to be brand new...me and the garage manager are gonna have a chat

yea aparently it just kept rubbing the tire until it just failed at that spot......wich explains why it happened during a sharp turn

I'm not even going to waste my time typing out my whole spill about how a crash at 70mph is twice as deadly as a crash at 50mph, and how the rate of deaths increases very steeply from there. It seems so worthless anymore. And you wonder why the tire blew out?? :angry7:
