Does anyone know legal issues surrounding drifting. I'd really like to find a parking lot or some sort of area that I can go around here to slide around but I don't know what my best course of action is.

exactly... I think our best bet would be to find a lot where you may know someone that works at the place etc. For example, my brothers friend owns a factory in the next town over. I am goin g to have him talk to his friends dad about that.

Another option would probably be just asking someone, but I think your chances of them agreeing to parking lot use are very slim unless you have a compelling reason...

Another thing I was thinking is to write up a release form to make the owner feel a little more comfortable. I have tossed these ideas around... I was just wondering if anyone else had a golden answer :)

Ive been stopped by cops in a parking lot, they just harass you. A lot of lots around here arnt that visible anyway. I have a list of places I go to drift and alternate between them every 5 minutes or so.

If its not a road then there's no traffic violation. The most they could do is charge you with tresspassing but again it would require a complaint from the owner. Typically the police will ask you to quit messing around and give a little tonque lashing.

My little donut vid was on a back road in the middle of nowhere. Nowhere means no-one around to see or complain. That's my best advice. And if you're going to play in a parking lot just spend a minute before hand scouting out where the concrete medians are, they can dissapear in deep snow but you still don't want to slide sideways into one. Drive safe !

it snowed last night. Like hardcore snowing. I pulled out of my parking spot and did a few brake tests and even with the lightest pressure the brakes locked up, so i parked it again and put my ABS fuse back in. While the ABS is not that great, if it really was that slick, it'd be better than nothing. But I got out on the roads and it ended up that I could brake substantially harder.

Then I went and had some fun. The wagon is really tail happy and I held a 100ft+ drift sideways through a parking lot. It was intense. I was trying to find some friends to come with and film but no one would go. But the snow is still around today, so maybe tonight I can go out and have some more fun. :twisted:

The US actually went metric for a few years but no one in the population switch in their daily lives.

I must say, metric measurment of distances is easier to understand, but come on, how DOESN'T 16units = 1 inch | 12 inches = 1 foot | 3 feet = 1 yard | and 1,760 yards = 1 mile....i mean come on....if you don't get that then you're just stupid.


But seriously folks...there are some things from each form that i think are easier to understand than others. 10cm = 1 decameter | 10 decameters = 1 meter etc. Working by 10s makes sense. But i can understand 1/23 better than 0.04347826 ANY day.

Also, saying "it's so hot out! it's gotta be at least 95 degrees!" is a lot more impactful than saying "it's so hot out! it's gotta be at least 35 degrees!"

That's BS. Simply because its worked everywhere else in the world. I grew up using imperial and then lived through the switch over. You get used to it, plain and simple.

The measurement systems reduce human error dramatically. Everything is a factor of 10, how simple can it get ? Now having grown up using both systems I only know my height and weight in feet / pounds but pretty much everything else I do in metric.

Agreed. Here in colorado the roads stay covered in snow for maybe a day. Otherwise you have alot of melt off and such so snow tires don't seem that vital. The only reason I have them is they came with the wheels :lol:

if i had any other car than an AWD subaru, i'd have snows.....probably....i'm a pretty good driver; and thats really what it comes down to. if you're not cocky, but confident, careful, wise, and knowledgable about driving technique about how you drive and where you drive, you'll be fine most of the time.

my dad's ex-daily driver before he got the camery was a 1987 Chevy Nova. It went like mad in the snow, never got stuck, because he knew what the car was capable of, was always careful, and never went beyond it's limits.

Snows are helpful in braking where AWD does virtually nothing. That's why I like mine...because the ABS rarely sees use.

I'm not saying my ABS is disabled or I would like it disabled, but it really hurts braking at slow speeds...I'd just rather not have to deal with it, because that means I'm getting better grip.

It's 69 right now.(11:21 a.m. central time) We are under a winter weather advisory. :smt043 Suppose to get rain changing to sleet then snow. They are saying we could get up to two inches. Not alot for you guy's up north but down here they will close school and all the milk and bread at Kroger will be gone. I'll believe it when I see it. Welcome to winter in Tennessee.

Global warming causes changes in atmospheric patterns that can shift traditionally mild patterns and make things more severe. While i suppose it is possible that sometimes this could result in lower then normal temperatures, the more recognizable result is the stronger storm systems.

I've had my fuse pulled for a long time now. There was a storm this week and I did a few brake tests in the parking lot. Scared the bejesus out of me how slick it was. I threw the fuse back in, but I realized as soon as I left the parking lot it wasn't that bad and I only got to ABS when I was screwing around and slamming on the brakes :lol: Just fun to listen to it. Otherwise I was sticking just fine with threshold braking.

I still think ABS is more of a steering safety system then a braking safety system, even tested it out in the snow. Triggered the ABS and gave it a good turn to the left and the car went that way. Wouldn't do that if my tires were locked up.

Bingo! That's exactly what ABS is, it's to still allow manuverabilty. It doesn't help you stop faster at all, that's the biggest myth that a lot of people believe. :cry:

I pull my fuse every winter. I've run enough competitive events in the snow/ice to know that ABS only makes it worse. At best, ABS will keep you going in a straight line but the penalty is a greatly increased stopping distance.

Quite frankly, I'd rather end up a little sideways against a curb than plow straight into the back of another car.

There's nothing worse than making a good run through the course only to hear the ABS kick in as you slide through the stop box at <10mph. Well, the only thing worse is doing it on the road where there's somethign you can hit.

Go into a parking lot when it snows, mark off a braking point. Come in around 30mph and floor the brakes using ABS. Get out and mark that point. Pull the ABS fuse and repeat. You'll easily stop a car lenght sooner. What happens without ABS is the snow (works with gravel as well) gets all bunched up in front of the tires and helps you slow down. With ABS this does not occur.

uhhh.... no. and then yes.

Both throttle and brakes are bad unless you are skilled in how to use them. Braking in a skid is very bad because the front tires need to roll to move faster than the rear. When you brake, you lock up the front tires so they can't pull you around. Applying throttle to the point your tires are spinning would be just as bad because you are still sliding and not allowing the front tires to pull you out of it. The best option 90% of the time in a skid, is to let off the throttle and simply steer towards where you were trying to go in the first place using hand to hand feed so that you don't put too much steering in too quick.

Now, I've been in a few skids with the roo where I applied throttle because if I had corrected the skid correctly, my momentum would have carried me right into a curb, so I instead applied throttle to powerslide/drift away from the curb until my momentum was parallel to the road, at which point I recovered the skid.

We were doing skid recoveries/wet braking at work the other day, and it was so cold the water we threw down on the skid pad froze. At 15mph it took every one of those cars equipped with ABS 50ft to stop. Went out for skids in a lexus RX and it took about 30 ft to stop stomping on the parking brake. Locked up tires has its advantages and disadvantages.

EDIT: I can explain how ABS works vs. threshold braking, and how skid recoveries work and how to do them and all that in case you guys were curious how we teach it at work.
