Cool!

Why only 8 psi? I'm sure the fuel system (and certainly the block) can handle a lot more than that.

Looking good. I think the wheels would look better with the entire wheel being one color, and that color being gun metal. Other than that it's nice.

Just got into highschool, but you've already done modding. Has this been a garage project since before you had your license?

haha, yeah sorry about that. I haven't posted much on this site lately. I guess I should update that. lol

I'm actually in 10th grade this year. That Maverick isn't as quick as he thought he was. My newest competition is a couple of srt-4's that belong to a junior and a senior. I will be running around 12-15 Psi before too long. I just wanted to get used to the car before I started the go fast stuff.

I plan on installing a MBC, and 3" TBE around spring break time.

BTW: My dad and I built this car over the summer. We put a lot of time into it and still have a ways to go! He just picked up a Black 91' SS that he swapped my wheels onto. I am geting a set of 05' WRX wheels soon, and I am thinking of going the gunmetal route.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'll keep you posted as we make some more mods!

Sounds like it's time for a turbo swap. I'm not sure how much boost that VF8 could push to the car, but I don't know a lot about turbos. Keep us updated.

And yes, I was like...15 at the start of 10th grade.

wait a sec... you swapped out the ej22t for an ej20g??

why might i ask?

mark... on my buddy's ss, he hits fuel cut with just a different exhaust. that might be why he's only runnin 7psi.

Wiscon_Mark
12-30-2006, 11:29 AM
Yeah, I suppose. I dunno how good the fuel system is on these stock EJ22Ts.

Spence- the EJ20G is just as good (if not a little better) as the EJ22T ;)

You can also use all the WRX aftermarket bolt ons (for the most part anyways) like uppipes and such.

legacy92ej22t
12-31-2006, 02:06 AM
You can use most of the aftermarket WRX stuff that would work with the EJ20G, with the EJ22T too.

The EJ20G is closed deck like the EJ22T, The 22T being the better block with the extra displacement but the EJ20G had DOHC heads that are far better flowing then the EJ22T SOHC heads. The 20G had bigger injectors and an AWIC OEM too. They were also factory tuned for around 200-220 chp instead of the EJ22T's 160 chp.

The nasty combo is the EJ22T block with EJ20G heads....yep, that's a nasty bitch. Grrrrrrr....

I would've just adapted the stock BOV with the crushed washer mod.

They were cheap! lol like almost free cheap!

Wiscon_Mark
02-22-2007, 10:36 PM
Well, the stock BOV mod is even cheap3r!

That's cool man, I've just heard a lot of bad things about the atmospheric BOVs.

livestrong14
02-22-2007, 10:58 PM
Yeah, I don't know if I will stick with it or not. I can always put the stock one back on if it doesn't work out. And the turbo timer is kind of a neat novelty item. "Sir do you know your car is still running?" lol

Reason
02-23-2007, 12:13 AM
Yea the atmospheric BOV hurt power. WRX fanatics (I think) has some guy with dyno charts. I was looking into when I was going to do a swap. I didn't care about huge numbers and such. I was going to get the Turbo Smart adjustable BOV. You can do either or, or both at the same time. I like the woosh sound personally.

Wiscon_Mark
02-23-2007, 12:19 AM
Apparently an atmospheric BOV can eventually hurt the turbo too...

Reason

Apparently an atmospheric BOV can eventually hurt the turbo too...

Really? Guess it would be a good idea to have a back up.......or a good excuse to go bigger

I guess it screws with air/fuel mixtures. But if you have the car tuned properly I don't say what the big deal would be.

Wiscon_Mark
02-23-2007, 08:39 AM
Well, tuning it properly is tricky, because it tends to screw with the A/F ratios all over the place, and it'll usually find a way to mess it up even if you've got the car tuned.

Same goes for a lot of aftermarket intakes.

strat81
02-23-2007, 05:21 PM
if your tuned with a bov it's not as bad...

if you run a recirc'd bov, you'll still hear it (my buddy's 321 hp wrx has a turbo xs recirc'd and you can still hear that thing no problem) and have an easier time tuning it.

hey man, sick SS, i like what youve done with it, it looks nice and clean, damn that engine looks clean, i got the same car, more or less, well i guess less, i personally like the color and the rims, they fit, your car looks fast, but you still got the semi-sleeper looks, i respect that,

one question i got, how did your auto to manual conversion go, my 91 SS is still an auto, but more than ever id like to make it into a project car, clean it out, lighten the fat and put a 5spd in. my best plan is to find a complete legacy 5spd and just swap parts, figured it would be easiest way to get everything cheaply,

im a newb mechanic, never even touched the inside of a real car untill about 6 months ago, when my crank pulley bolt broke, which i fixed, and now im replacing my drive plate, which seems to be going smoothly, most this stuff seems like its not too difficult but i just got a big lack of experience i suppose.

again nice job with your SS,

91SS represent

livestrong14
02-28-2007, 08:41 PM
Hey thanks man, I appreciate the kind words. The auto to manual swap is very simple. In terms of bolting right in and requiring no modification. You will need:

1. A 5-speed tranny
2. Manual Transmission crossmember
3. Manual Transmission Driveline
4. A Clutch Master cylinder (If you get a hydraulic tranny)
5. New pedal assembly (Manual Car)

You can PM me if you have any more questions. You should also hit up bbs.legacycentral.org a lot of members on that site have done the same swap. They are a forum focused on 90-94 Legacy's.

Update!

As a few of you know, we have been very busy down at the shop lately! Sorry I haven't been able to update more, our time frame was very short. But now, the legacy is back in action! With a few new goodies;) Thanks to many friends I have been piecing together more parts to be installed this spring break. But, enough of the future, here's what we did over the last week!

Kory (koryh2009) and I drove to Portland on the 26th of Dec! We immediately pulled the motor out of my 91 Turbo. It was time to remove the torqueless 2.0 shortblock! Time for a closed deck 2.2T! We also threw in a few goodies to go with it, including ACL bearings and a (VERY) low mile JDM WRX crank. Everything was torn apart, checked, and checked again then given a clean bill of health.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/01/PortlandTripDec030-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/01/PortlandTripDec020-2.jpg

Then, I decided to do a little dress-up. I got this idea from David at RalliTEK, and I personally think it looks bad-ass!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/01/PortlandTripDec025-2.jpg

Then after we got all of this assembled, it was time to go back in!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/01/PortlandTripDec045-2.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/01/PortlandTripDec042-2.jpg

The car runs better than ever! Smooth and beautiful idle, can't ask for more! My dad can sure build one hell of a motor!

Vid of start up!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/01/th_PortlandTripDec076-2.jpg (http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g155/Livestrong14/?action=view&current=PortlandTripDec076.flv)

Here she is all put back together, still needs to be cleaned up a little, but she sure looks pretty stock. New mods to add to the list include: JDM Forester high volume oil pump, ACL bearings, STi Group N Pitch Dampener, STi Group N 5MT Tranny Mount, STi Group N Motor Mounts, and to finish it off, a Diamond coil pack.

Driving Impressions

There is no comparison between the 20G bottom end and 22T when it comes to torque. After driving the 20G for a year, then swapping over to a rebuilt 22T shortblock, I can't believe it took me so long to finally make the swap!!!

It takes less gas to get moving from a stop, the clutch/gas transfer is minimal. It finally has enough torque to go up Germantown Road in 3rd! I used to have to downshift at every turn. And perhaps the best part is having an active 5th gear, that you can still accelerate from at 60 mph to get up to freeway speeds (Idaho 75mph) The best part of all of this, after driving back from Portland to Idaho yesterday is my 28 mpg highway! What more can you ask for from a high 13 second car????

Updates:

Well guys, It was a long summer. I have been stocking up on parts for over a year to finally bring the car to where it is now. It was a lot of hard work, and a big project for us to undertake but we did it. It made the trip from Portland to Boise without any troubles  I must say that even with our time crunch, we couldn't have asked for any better of a result.

The Story:

My dad purchased this car for $300 about 4 years ago. It had been sitting in our shop covered in dust for almost a year before I decided that I would like to make it my project and daily driver for my upcoming high school years. The car slowly began to transform over time.
See this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1519961

Now a senior in highschool, this car is still my daily driver and weekend warrior. It's made quite the impression in my little home town

Now on to the pics!!!!

Thanks guys! It means a lot!

It has been a lot of hard work and a project shared with my dad and I that I will never forget. We have a lot of time and care invested into this project.

Now that I am a senior in highschool, I am starting to save up for college, so I am slowly wrapping up my project.

My EJ257 is out of an 05 STi BTW stover

That thing is a monster man. Very, very nice work, I'm sure you must be very proud of the amount of work and time invested in this project.
