I just bought a set of JDM projection headlights and need help on wiring them on to my 99 GT Limited. I would much rather not screwing up the wiring harness to much just in case i sell the car down the road i can put it back to stock

So you're the bastard that beat me out on that auction eh? Yeah once it hit 3 something I called it quits. Best advice I can give ya is to rewire all of your headlight stuff. I know it sounds like a huge pain in the butt and possibly really unnecessary, but if you look at how small (or rather how high the gauge is) it starts to make sense as to why your headlights appear so dim. What you want to do is first off get yourself a wiring diagram. Ultimately, your headlights are wired to the switch on the steering column, if you can locate and identify which relay turns on what -- ie parking lamps as opposed to headlamps. Once you find those, either splice in or replace the wires coming from the relays going to your lights with some larger gauge wires. This helps eliminate voltage drop and helps move the juice that your bulbs are begging for. Plus, rewiring it will allow you to say connect the "city lights' on the JDM headlamps (between the projector and turn signal) to your parking lamps for a neat look. You can then wire up your lows and highs, and all the while seperate your fogs to make them come on with the parking lamps as well. Check out www.danielsternlighting.com (http://www.danielsternlighting.com) under the tech articles for a basic wiring diagram of the setup you'll be looking to do. IF you have more questions email Daniel direct, the guy knows his stuff and will probably be a better help than any of us. Good luck with the lamps, hope everything works out fine, if you take the time to do things right, you will be amazed with the results and create a pretty crazy looking lighting scheme (say parking lights, city lights and fogs...pretty badass, and definately unique).

has anyone done a projection headlight conversion and if so how did you do it?

theres a forth wire on the connector when my stocks just have 3.

fabrication has never been my strong point unless theres a guide for me to follow.

I'd guess the 4th wire is just another hot wire for the second bulb...

well if thats all then i guess i'll just splice them together. but first i think i'll try and google up some tech specs.

I'd say that the identical red wires are just there for both bulbs (highs and lows???) and you should wire them that way. Brights=one of the reds dims=the other red. Just my guess from looking.

figured it out. had to investigate just a little further.

i grabbed some extra wire to close that gap.

you will end up with 2 extra bolts and 2 extra screws but they're not necessary so its ok.

who needs some oem headlight housings?

Love the new headlights, those are what I want to get. Looking at your pics, I think you should get rid of the red pin stripe!

+1 no pin stripe.

where did you get the lamps? how much? I just saw the pair on ebay go for $305 PLUS shipping. :shock: someone took it over some hot coals.

yea i've been slowly picking at that red stripe but unlike the grey one that used to be there it just crumbles when i start to pull on it instead of come off in a nice long piece.

i got them from ebay last week for $227 shipped :twisted: . i wanted to get those projector fogs that ended yesterday but i couldn't keep up with the bid.

Best way to do it and still be able to swap back to stock is to make your own headlight harness using relays that plugs into the factory, and uses the factory circuit to trip the relays in the harness you've created.. That's how I did my Morettes.

Does anybody know what the bulb in the reflector part of the JDM lights are for? and what kind of bulb goes in there (H3?)?

There should be 4 bulbs IIRC, one for the turn signal/parking lamps, one in the reflector (city lights), one for the projector (low beams), and the highbeam. A lot of the newer VW's have a small light that just barely lights up the reflector but doesnt throw off any light (similar to the BMW's angel eyes or celis), used as either city lights (some European cities don't let you use the headlamps at night while in the city to limit light pollution and because the roadways are very well lit, so the city lights basically let others see you without you blinding them) or DRL's. Maybe if Galek could get a good shot of the rear of the headlamp housing so we could see all the bulbs and locations it could help in identifiying them, and a lit up at night shot.

yea i can do that. that extra bulb is just a driving lamp though. and it takes an accessory 168 bulb.

Ok... my lights are wired up and I almost got all the bulbs:

Projector = Low Beam = H1
Reflector = Hi Beam = H3
Driving Lamp = ?

Does anybody know the type of bulb that goes in the driving lamp?

It would appear as though most of the conversation is over for this question, but I just joined SLi and thought I would put my two cents in as well.

I bought JDM projector headlights and the JDM fog lights off eBay as well and installed them. Expensive, but worth every penny! You can check out my ride for pics at my car domain site rather then me posting new pics here. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/584957

You seem to have figured out all the bulbs already. I did it slightly differently. I wired the projector (low beam) to the original low beam wires, and highbeams the same way. The Driving (Parking) lights I wired in seperately to a new switch so that I would have full control over them. It's a little wedge bulb and I experimented with a few different colors to change the look from time to time.
For the turn signal I changed the base to match the original 1157 socket instead of the 1156 that came with it. That way I got the parking lights and turn signal back on the corners. I just used a dremel and a file to modify the socket a bit.

The Fog Lamps were a different story. I'm still looking to see if there's already a thread for that subject. They require quite a bit of modification to the bumper cutouts and brackets and it's rather irreversable. But they're on now and I love them. I wired the fog switch in through a new relay instead of the orginal way to keep manual control over them. (they don't shut off with the highbeams and can be on alone) I bought an additional switch for the side lights which are supposed to only come on with the turn signals. The final effects can be seen in the pictures.

Can someone actually tell me what wires to hook where. I can't seem to figure out the right combo of colors from the JDM 4 wire to the USDM 3 wire.

I searched on NASIOC and found the colors and what the wires do on the harness side. What I don't know is were to place the wires in relation to the 4 pin connector on the JDM side.

You have got to be kidding me... I just spent like 4 hours testing leads because I thought this was as much as anyone cared to share about it. I even made this thing. But oh well, they're in now :P
