View Full Version : short shift = holy crap

just installed my kartboy short shift..

everything takes me forever and this took me 20mins...i even washed the plastic and shifter boot. it was all really easy and self explanatory. when everyone said they had issues putting the shifter in, i figured you all to be a bunch of lil' ladies. hahah, it really is hard. i pushed with all my freaking might and actually broke off my rear view with my back, pushing against the roof. ended up slamming it down with a brick i found. nice.

after putting it all back together i decided a test drive was in order. jesus christ the shift is short. where kartboy said a %40 decrease, i'd be inclined to say 75% decrease in shift. it's AMAZINGly short. but it's good. I plan on autocrossing next season and i can imagine this making all the quick shifting tons easier.

i also bought the bushigns, but i have to do some xmas shopping, so i'll do that tomorrow....let ya know how it goes.

I saw the title and was like "wtf?"

I had a B&M and it worked out really well for me. After about a year and a half its getting a little lose though. Is there a way to tighten it so it feels more solid? (I am uber n00ber when it comes to this stuff).

haha, reading the responses i couldn't figure out what the hell you guys were talking about......

title fixed. no more 'short shit'

lmao Short Shit is my best friend's boyfriend...

I've been seriously thinking about a short shifter, but I like the feel of the shifter I've already got, so I think I'll leave it be.

how much does that kit cost?

12-16-2006, 08:29 PM
from scoobytuner.com (cheaper than kartboy.com or boxer4racing.com)

$95 for shifter
$32 for bushings

ummm, I thought the Kartboy package deal (shifter and bushings) was 120.

Kartboy packages start at:

Lever/bushing $120

Lever/bushing/knob $150

I went with the second one, and love it.

hmm..haha, lemme check how much i paid.

ok, only 30 on the bushings......

wtf was i thinking at the time? hmmmm.....

maybe shipping w/kartboy was expensive, fuck if i remember...anyway, $1 here, $1 there....

regardless, GREAT BUY!!!! lol

Buy it used and you'll save even more. I spent about $95 for my setup. I have solid delrin bushings with the kartboy

It's a really nice shifter, not as awkward to 5th gear as the PDM I had (though the throw is a little longer w/ a shorter knob), and it provides very solid shifts, a little notchy though (since it's a shortshifter).

Glad you like it

One more Question.... Is the actual shifter lower than the stock one???

i.e. Will I still be shifting a mack truck height shift knob?

12-16-2006, 11:45 PM
Yes, the knob sits a fair bit lower than the Subaru piece.

12-17-2006, 09:36 PM
that is a big reason I would want this... im cutting my stock one tomm. but i assume its still gonna suck.. lol

Hacking the stock knob will shorten the throw, but it will really increase the force you need to change the gear. Most shortshifters relocate the pivot point that the linkage attaches to in addition to shortening the shaft.

If you want a cheap upgrade, get the lever from an RS. It's about 15% shorter than stock. People usually sell it for $15-20 on rs25.com.

Naa, I plan to get the kartboy one, just cant stand shifting a Dodge Ram... lol
