So i went to this dealer at my city today to check out a 99 GT L.I came there i saw the car i drove it and it was all nice and fun, then they took a look at my car and we sat down to talk about what we are going to do.
The GT is a 99 Limited,150K km,AT,in a good condition. My car is a 98 Outback with 194K km,AT in a good condition. The dealer is selling the car for 10,500 and a bit,and have said that he will only consider giving me 6,800 for my outback.Which was really disappointing because i really want a GT,and because he insulted me by offering me less then 7 for my ride.
I was wondering what you guys think about this trade, would you go for something like that? :-?
that's the GT:

$10,500 sounds high to me. Play some hardball and get him down to $9k.

Settle on $6,800 for your trade, and bargain some on the $10,500. I'd say you could get down as low as $8,500 if you're good. I also assume this is Canadian, as that seems steep either way to me in USD.

Keep in mind that's Canadian $$
You're never going to get much for a trade in value, Mike. That's just the way it is...Try selling it privately?

One strategy dealers will use is to figure out where you're wanting to bargain. If you're set on getting a lot out of your trade-in, they'll offer you as much as they can within reason on it, so you'll be happy. If you know you don't have much for a trade-in, they'll usually haggle on the price of the car they're selling. Maybe you could accept the trade in value they're offering, then haggle a little on the car to get your money's worth? I think this was discussed here before, but I'm not sure.
Edit: And don't be afraid to walk out. It only took once for me, and they called me within an hour or so wanting me to come back because they'd accept the price I had named which was too low moments ago.

Keep looking is what i say! I have bought 2 1999 LGT Limiteds now (both silver).. and for the first i paid $3100.. the second i paid $5800 with brand new tires. DO NOT pay 10k.. what a RIP OFF. I wouldnt pay over 7k for it.. they are just trying to scam you man. Especially with 150k. I sold my first one with $150k for less than $3500 after getting some new parts for it. I'd just not get it man and keep on with the search!
edit : read above.. you made the right choice man! what a scam!

Keep looking. Buying a used car just means it takes time. Don't ever let a deadline or "must have now" feelings get to you. Only buy when you get the deal that you know in your gut is right.
Also, you could try buying a used one privately? Probably cheaper, and you get more out of your car when you sell it yourself as well.
Does their 10.5k price have any additional benefits, like a certified inspection, extended warranty, etc?

Hey man,
I'm in Canada and my 99 LGT only cost me $10,000 after taxes. That's about $8,600 CAD. It had 122,000 KM, new tires, new brakes, fully serviced at the dealership, 5 speed.
The asking price was for $10,000 + tax and they took my piece of crap DSM that had 300,000km, needed new starter, new clutch, timing belt, water pump.. basically the drive to the dealership was its last!
Good luck!!

Find out if a headgasket has been done on the car. If not, say that you'll take their trade in, and pay their price, but their service shop has to replace the headgaskets and give you the paperwork and work warranty covering that repair. Headgasket job will cost you quite a bit down the road anyway, it'd get it covered before its even an issue.
