Yeah, it was a 2001 MY too! Guy drove for a living. It was on the original shortblock and tranny, no headgasket problems to my knowledge.

Moral of the story: Take care of the Legacy and you can hand it down to your grandchildren.

One alternator, an igniter, a radiator, a battery cable, 2 front 02 sensors, 2 front axles, 2 front wheel bearings. Last 3 items are due to mods for the most part, so whatever. The cars just keep going, with a few exceptions.

'95 Legacy Sedan, 4eat. 150,000 miles, i've owned it since it had 112,000. And I'm not always the nicest to my car.

My old '83 Subaru GL Wagon had 212,000 miles when i sold it.

Edit: 152,000 on the clock, still original motor & tranny. I've gone through a pile of front-half shafts, brakes, and front cv boots though. Also gone through 50 oil changes, at almost 5 quarts a piece, that's around 250 quarts of oil. May be for sale soon, if I can find a better replacement.

Kind of depressing to read these figures. If you were to ask this question on a volvo board the average answer would have 100,000 more miles in it. We just got a 1996 Outback with 108,000 on it. I am just trying to figure out what we should expect out of it. My 1988 760 wagon has 298,000 and still is strong and fast. Wonder how this Outback will measure up.

its a shame how cars have been built here int he USA. 60,000 miles and you have ring ridge in the cylinders. Open a Volvo motor up after 200,000 miles and no ridge. My 22R out of a 1986 toyota pickup had no ridge at 200,000 miles either. They use hard steel. Wonder how the Subaru will fair. I got the Volvo in 1996 with 65,000 on it. Driven lots of cross countries. In one year I hit 2 deer, and that was not fun.

check out the scoobs in junk yards- they are always wrecked, not abandoned (and someone has probably already taken the engine for a project). Subarus are like bmw's, lots of little things wear out (axles, front end seals, etc) but the parts that matter seem to hold up. The exceptsions are the auto trannys, which no manu makes a really stellar one, and the head gaskets on the early 2.5 engines. A subaru head gasket is the easiest hg to service i know of though.

vovo owners are wierd and fanatical- i wouldnt want to be in any kind of contest with them, unless it involved performance.

lol! I am only on my 4th. volvo... lol Speaking of head gaskets... lst summer I over heated my wagon for the first time and now it uses water if I don't keep some block sealer in it. So even tho the old girls runs great, I need to do the head gasket and rear main sseal. I have only run Mobil 1 in it. Great oil. And yes... Volvo's have their own quircky things that fall apart. My '97 BD Legacy has 182,00 and my brother's '95 1.8 L just turned over 300,000 couple of weeks ago on the original motor. Mine is still going strong, while his will need an engine soon. It needs pretty much all new gaskets and seals. The gas and oil is mixing somewhere which makes him get horrible gas mileage for a 1.8 :-(

We're at 116K and climbing on my wife's '97 BG Limited. We've had the center diff solenoid, headgaskets, timing belt and water pump, struts, tires & wheels, front hubs and half-shafts replaced in the last 25K. Musta cost me $4K in the last two years. The first four years were pretty much trouble-free, so I'm scratching my head and nursing a sore ass at the moment....
Hopefully, we can get back to the "reliable" Subaru I keep hearing about.

I've seen a lot of Subarus sold at around 150K miles...now I know why. If I didn't outright own the car, I'd consider trading it on something else, like another Neon (with snow tires!). Every time I say: "Well, at least we dont' have to do that for another 100K", but it's getting old. Man, I hope we're past the worst of it.

the '98 has about 107 and change sitting on it now, but the trans has around 30k (kid before me was terrible on the car).

So far, only maintence has been done to it, nothing major broke. Timing belt done around 93k, and just keeping up on everything else that a car needs to be maintained with.

hey im new here. i have a 1994 green subaru legacy wagon and i have more than 218k in my car now. the only problems i had with it since i got it is a transmission leak, which just needed a new axle seal and a bent muffler which i replaced with my brother's old 04 wrx muffler (which sounds amazing) also my gas gauge doesn't work so i just reset my mileage everytime i get gas because channging the sending unit is too expensive. other than those little problems, it still runs great! subarus are very reliable cars no matter how old the car is.

You mean Japan - seems like a lot of people use public transportation to commute to work and drive only recreationally because it is that expensive to operate the car (parking, etc.) These are cars that started their life in Japan and get shipped to NZ or Australia as second-hand cars. They are all RHD countries so it works out. Also Japan has laws that highly discourages buying second-hand so te export of those cars is huge.

I just hit 30,000 kms today! Considering I bought it less than two years ago with less than 10,000 kms, it's crazy...
I didn't have a camera at the time, so I had to wait to get home to take this pic:

Love that instrument cluster...LED white backlighting looks so classy

wow I never seen one that maxed out at 10K rpms.

144,5xx on my '95 BD. Only problem is a cylinder 2 misfire that is apparently a mystery to any mechanic. Other than that, its still solid.

Have 269k miles on the EJ25D in my 96 Legacy I gave my mom. 4eat is surviving only on lucas transmission fix, motor runs smooth but heads are noisy.

My other EJ25D got rebuilt with oversize pistons at 167k since the HG's blew and warped the case and heads. Runs awesome now!

My turbo Legacy's stock motor lasted 196k miles, oil pump seized and caused catastrophic failure including 2 snapped rods & hole in the block. :( now getting together a rebuilt 2.0L closed deck motor, no time or money to finish atm.

My last ej22E motor lasted 140-150k before it blew head gaskets, and I ran it for thousands of miles like that, lol. Just had to keep the radiator full of fluid, and no thermostat.
