My car is b0rked

So this morning I'm driving to work and my car starts acting up. I'm on the freeway, doing about 70 in fifth and I gave it some gas since I was late and kind of in a hurry. The RPMS jumped up but my speed didn't increase, so naturally I let off and downshifted. RPMS jump up to about 5k but it still isn't moving. Now I know I'm in trouble. I limped it to the off ramp and waited for the light to green, put it in first and gave it some gas. VROOM it goes up to 5k again and barely moves. I somehow managed to limp it to work and get it into a parking space, and it stank like shit (burning smell). Tried to go to lunch on my break, put it in reverse and gave it some gas, RPM's jumped up again but the car only rolled back a little. Tried 1st, same thing. So I had my brother buy a few quarts of valvoline manual tranny fluid and bring it over. The dipstick said it was way full but I assumed it was inaccurate like its engine oil counterpart. I added a quart and tried again, no dice. So I added another quart, still wouldn't budge. So I had it towed to the nearest shop via AAA and they're going to look at it when they get a chance.

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed some similar symptoms. It seemed to be bogging a lot and requiring a lot of unnecessary downshifting. I've only been driving 5MT for a few months though, so I wasn't sure if it was a problem with the car or just me being a newb.

So any predictions on the problem? And how much is it gonna cost me? I just blew a trans in my last car (hyundai accident) so I'm hoping its not that. Clutch maybe? I really have no idea. I'll have to pay to get it fixed, since I don't have the tools or know-how. I really have no idea. I'm at 121k miles BTW.

Your clutch is fried.

Time for a new clutch, throw-out bearing and some new transmission fluid.
You probably overfilled the transmission too, and that's not very smart. Hopefully you haven't damaged it - a transmission isn't like a balloon, it won't expand the more you chuck in.

I estimate $300-1000 depending on parts & labor.

Honestly, my brother isn't very experienced either. I'm not sure if we could pull it off.

Yeah I will be sure and get the trans flushed. I just didn't really have anything else to try being at work and all so I thought I'd fill er up.

Yeah, when those RPM's don't match up with the speed of the car, then you should do the clutch first.

As others have said clutch. Its wierd though that it went just all of a sudden. Usually you notice the slipping hundreds of miles ahead of it going out. The pedal might have been out of adjustment meaning the clutch never fully disengaged.

As to the tranny fluid, manual tranny fluid and auto fluid aren't the same. The manual fluid is there to keep stuff lubricated, thats it. Auto fluid is used to actually transfer power, so yes, if it's low the car won't go.

Clutch cost me $600 under the table. All quotes I received were in the $700-800 ball park otherwise.

If you frequent NASIOC (aka NastySoCk), you could ask your local region if there's anyone in your area that will help you do it or do it on as a sidejob (as some work in shops themselves); most of the ones that will do it for you will do it for way less than a shop. The ones that will show you how will make due with a case of beer or dinner :wink: .

For the OP, I agree with the others, definately sounds like a toasted clutch. Now would be a good time to upgrade to the light-weight flywheel you know you want. :) (and maybe the kartboy shifter/bushings...new tranny mount......

I think the clutch had been failing for a while and we just didnt know what a failing clutch acted like... we have always had automatics and noticed that we were having a hard time with it but just thought we sucked- we both just learned to drive a stick when jordan got the car and hes good at it now, but i suck haha.

A good and simple way to test your clutch is, put the car into 3rd or 4th gear. At a good speed, with you left foot press the brake, not come to a complete stop but just a little drag on the wheels, then with your right foot press the gas, but not like your ripping it, just a tad.

If your rpms start climbing, your clutch is slipping.. if the rpms are matching the decrease in speed of your vehicle, you got a good grabbing clutch.

This is only recommended maybe once or twice a year.. this kind of strain on your vehicle should only be used for quick testing purposes. It only takes about 5 seconds to do it and virtually no harm except your normal wear and tear.
