Which year WRX did you go with?

Thanks for the comments guys. I don't see a WRX swap in its future, but I am planning some power upgrades...

I believe it's an 02-03 sedan stb, one of my friends had it laying around his garage and didn't want it.

Good Lookin car dan! I'm back in albany, and i might be putting in rear strut tops/mounts this winter. you don't have a spring compressor do you?

I was doing a little poking around to figure out what I want to get next (most likely new lateral link, trailing link & front a-arm bushings + PSRS), and found the exact rear STB I put in my car:

I gave the car a wash this weekend and threw on my new rims, Prodrive P1s.

Sadly the tires are pretty trashed, but will soon be replaced, most likely with Kumho Ecsta SPTs.

Best choice on rims! I am also going to put P1's on my Legacy.

Very classy. Did that WRX rear strut tower brace do much to stiffen up the rear?
Nice GT, keepin it clean!

Honestly I didn't notice any real difference, but then again with the amount of squish in the suspension I wouldn't anyway. Once I get some real springs & struts under the car along with new bushings I'll be able to get a better idea.

Considering how close it is to the parcel shelf, I'm not expecting to feel any difference.

Well the car is all pulled apart again, I got sick of the horrible noises the transmission was making and oil leaking from the valve cover gaskets.

It's getting a 'new' transmission from a 99 RS along with all new shifter bushings. I'm going to get the flywheel resurfaced and balanced, and have to either resurface or replace the clutch pressure plate.

The valve clearances will all be checked and re-shimmed as required, then the valve covers resealed. I have the MSD coil hooked up and will be getting new KarlynSTI wires for it.

I picked up another STI take-off exhaust (the old one has a loose baffle), and I'm planning to pair it with equal-length headers (obx most likely) and a magnaflow cat.

The brakes are ok for now, I'm just planning to repaint the calipers as they are starting to show some rust.

The suspension is going to get some attention also, I'm planning to replace all the bushings and the ball joints. I picked up a set of Tein struts and BG5 springs a while ago that I'm going to try and make work, we'll see how that goes. The rear swaybar needs to be repainted also, I'm trying to decide whether to go to a larger bar in the front.

Here are some 'in progress' pics:

I hope you are keeping tabs of what stuff costs.

Im interested in seeing what it took (cost wise) to make this all happen. If you are willing to give that info out anyways.

Keep up the good work, cant wait to see it when its finished.

AussieDan
03-07-2008, 10:59 PM
I'm using the WRX harness so the cluster will plug right in when I'm done. I haven't looked into what it would take to make the WRX cluster work with a legacy harness but I doubt it would be worth the trouble.

As for keeping tabs on the costs, the lowest cost route to this kind of swap is really to buy an entire wrecked WRX. I tried to save some money by purchasing a 'swap' (complete drivetrain & wiring) but invariably you end up having to buy stuff that's missing separately and it all adds up. At this point I'm just trying to get it up and running without spending more than I have to, things like a vf turbo upgrade will have to wait for now.

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated this thread.

You can visit my blog (http://aussiedan.com/) to get all the details but basically I've got most of the wiring done and the driveline in. I'm working on finishing up the wiring, getting the interior put back together and installing the rest of the engine & exhaust parts.

Some pics from today:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/07/DSCF2424JPG-1.jpg (http://photos.phpwerx.net/cars/Legacy/Swap/2008-07-01_EJ20_Installed/800x600/DSCF2424.JPG.html) https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/07/DSCF2425JPG-1.jpg (http://photos.phpwerx.net/cars/Legacy/Swap/2008-07-01_EJ20_Installed/800x600/DSCF2425.JPG.html) https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/07/DSCF2426JPG-1.jpg (http://photos.phpwerx.net/cars/Legacy/Swap/2008-07-01_EJ20_Installed/800x600/DSCF2426.JPG.html)

What the interior looks like atm (more or less, these pics are older and I've done a fair bit of wiring since then):

Not too much to report, I've been pretty busy lately between work, folks visiting from Australia, house/garden and minor surgery.

That said, I have made some progress

The wiring is getting close to being complete, I wrapped up the steering column wiring this week and just have to take care of the mirror switch, cruise, defog, sunroof & a couple other misc things before I can hook up the battery and start testing everything out. Speaking of which I got a slick Braille battery which will save ~20lbs off the front end, not too shabby.

The engine is in and just needs an upper radiator hose, coolant, oil and intercooler installed. The downpipe is welded for the wideband and installed.

The WRX abs and cruise control actuator are installed. I picked up a set of wilwood calipers for the front which I'm rebuilding and refinishing, and need to clean up the swaybars and install those.

The HVAC and dash beam are installed and waiting for the last few bits of wiring before I install the dash itself, then the rest of the interior.

Basically I can see the light at the end of the tunnel

Yeah, it has been almost exactly a year since I pulled the car into the garage and started disassembly. In that time I've had a lot of side projects and we moved house, so there were times I didn't work on the car for a month at a stretch :-(

It's great to have it running and be into the 'tweaks & tuning' part of the project

Because I converted the car over to the complete WRX body harness (all that is left of the legacy wiring is the steering column, doors, radiator, taillights, roof cord & hvac) the cluster plugged right into the WRX harness. Physically it took a lot of figuring and careful cutting.

Basically the cluster has 4 main parts, the cluster itself (the white part), the faceplate, shroud and front 'glass'. I took the WRX cluster and faceplate, and cut off all the mounting points (pic1). I then took the legacy shroud and glass, and modified them to fit onto the front of the WRX cluster, which meant a lot of trimming and drilling a new hole for the trip meter button (pic2).

I had to modify the dash a little to make clearance for the top plug on the WRX cluster (pic3). Finally I was able to assemble the whole cluster (pic4).

It mounts using the stock mounting points and I'm very happy with how it looks. I may pull it apart at some point and make a custom faceplate for it, we'll see.

Haha, the GC is my wife's car. It just ticked over 100k miles and is due for some love next summer.

The Legacy is currently in the garage until I can find time to replace the fuel pump and resolve a couple of other issues. I was experiencing low fuel pressure under boost and and am keeping my fingers crossed that no internal damage was done. With the cold weather here atm it's a little difficult to get motivated to mess with changing the fuel pump out.

I just have one question what power steering lines did you use with that WRX Pump?

AussieDan

I'm running the 05 WRX pump + lines with an 04 STi xmember and rack. There is plenty of adjustment in the tie rod ends to account for the different track width. You'll need to modify the steering linkage to make it work with the legacy column, see here for details (http://aussiedan.com/blog/2008/07/02/steering-linkage-swap/).

Just a small update, I picked up a couple of new goodies early for xmas, a beatrush pulley cover and cusco turbo heat shield.

I've also been talking to the guys at IxizConcept (http://www.ixizconcept.com/) about a set of hood dampers for the BD/G/K, they seem to think that the GC damper may work so I might have to pick a set up and try them out. If not, they may be interested in getting a group-buy together to develop them, stay tuned!

Nice so i guess i need WRX lines for my 04 STi pump to work or mod my lines maybe. Im not sure how i will do this to the high pressure line, the return is easy. That beatrush pully cover is sweet how much that runn ya?

I don't think they will, at least not bolt on because of where the holes in the fenders are. But count me in if they're sub $90 for a pair and bolt on.

The beatrush cover is actually pretty cheap, I got it through rallysportdirect.

I guess i will have to pick up lines and a resevoir from the yard today or tomorrow and make this work if i cant bend the existing high pressure line in a fashion that will clear everything and not crimp.

I am going to make my own pully guard out of sheet alluminum i have laying around and TIG it together so it looks all tight. Maybe ill paint it a light gold or bronze who knows!

But that beatrush guard is niice

Damn, can't believe it's been so long since I was on the board.

Anyway, I found out that the engine had serious bottom end problems and have spent whatever spare time I could find this summer rebuilding it.

- block hot-tanked and honed
- crank ground .25mm undersize
- blueprinted OEM STi rods
- entire rotating assembly balanced
- ACL race series bearings
- new rings, headgaskets, etc, etc
- blueprinted oil pump
- STi cams & shimless buckets
- mild port match on the heads

I got the car back together last weekend and am putting some break-in miles on it and starting to get the tune dialed in.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to enjoy it a little before the weather sets in up here!

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure the motor had issues before I got it because I only drove it less than 200 miles and the rod bearings were all completely trashed. It wasn't running 100% right but I didn't have any misfire codes or anything like that, so I don't see how it could have gotten that bad so quickly.

Wow it's been forever...

Life has been pretty crazy this past year and the Legacy has mostly taken a back seat to things like becoming a Dad

I spent ages tracking down a fuel pressure problem, which after changing regulators and generally messing around turned out to be a faulty Prosport fuel pressure gauge. Since the oil pressure gauge hadn't worked properly from the factory I decided to ditch the Prosport garbage and installed an SPA Techniques dual gauge.

Finally got the coilovers and JDM control arms installed, but have been too slack to take proper photos :-(

I did get to run the car at a couple of AutoX events locally, which were awesome but showed me that I need:

1. To learn to drive the car
2. Better tires
3. Better brakes
4. More power

Some pics:

Plans for the winter are to build a proper 3" exhaust for the car that doesn't rub on the floor pan, after that we'll see about maybe some better tires for AutoX next year

Been a little while since I've had a chance to update again...

My battery ran down over the winter and failed, so I replaced it with an Odyssey PC925 and got a nice Ctek charger for it.

I decided against going full 3" since I want to keep the car fairly quiet, and I had a spare STi catback in the garage. The new setup is pretty much the same as the old one (2.5" piping and SS resonator with an STi axleback) but it doesn't rub or bang on the body and the new axleback doesn't have a loose baffle. I also added some paranoid fabs hangers to keep everything in line. So far I'm very happy with it, a nice deep but quiet tone with no drone on the highway that really wakes up and howls when you put the foot down.

Thanks for the comments guys!

The wheel is from a 2004 STi, and suits the car really well. It's definitely a nice upgrade from the 04 WRX wheel I had before.

As far as the cluster, the car has a *complete* WRX conversion so the cluster was plug and play with the WRX dash harness. Trying to make it work in a stock Legacy would definitely be more trouble than it's worth.

httrdd
01-01-2012, 07:54 PM
Oh ok you are running a wrx dash. Makes sense.

AussieDan
01-01-2012, 08:33 PM
Not exactly, swapping the entire WRX dash is a whole different kind of nightmare since you have to modify the firewall & dash beam, as well as the issue of how to get the door cards & windshield to match up with the different profile of the WRX dash.

I am running the Legacy dash, steering column and HVAC, with the Impreza body harness and all Impreza electronics except for the HVAC. Instead of merging the WRX engine portion into the Legacy body harness (the "normal" way of doing this swap) I merged the Legacy HVAC into the WRX body harness and modified it to work with the Legacy steering column, doors, roof harness, taillights, headlights, etc, etc. Physically the WRX cluster is modified to fit the (also modified) Legacy bezel and dash.

The reason for doing things this way is that I now have the updated 2005 cruise control, keyless entry, ABS (this was a biggie since the early BD/G ABS is terrible), body control module, fuel pump controller, all the emissions components, daytime running lights, the list goes on and on. All that's left of the original harness are the parts mentioned above that I kept (doors, taillights, roof harness, parts of the HVAC & headlight/radiator harness).

It was a *lot* more work, and when I first finished the car I felt it probably wasn't worth the additional effort. After driving it for a while though, I am very glad that I went this route. The end result is really a complete package, and could more accurately be described as a WRX in a Legacy body than a Legacy with a WRX engine.

This page (http://photos.phpwerx.net/cars/Legacy/Swap/2008-03-06_Cluster_And_Parts/) shows some pics of the modifications to physically marry the WRX cluster to the Legacy bezel and dash.
