View Full Version : What would your engine and tranny build be?

I'm just curious on what type of engine and tranny build people here would do. If you had every part at your disposal what would you build? And it doesn't need to be a beast. Whatever your needs would be.

Engine with a good headgasket.

EJ207 with a 5MT PPG gearset.

Of course the 207 would have all sorts of bolt ons.

TWE Stage 2 engine w/ 5mt PPG.
Need 1st and 2nd to be heavy duty for autox duties.

Can I include the Exedy Twin clutch?

EJ22T and the same gearbox as mark (as I don't know much about good gearboxes)

Well, I may have to change my mind...a dogbox would be wicked

i'm probably going to go with a lightly built EJ205, EJ22T heads, and mate it all to a JDM Type RA tranny.

I'd probably start out with either a JDM STI 5 speed or a USDM 6 speed, and for engines, I'd either do an STI longblock with upgrades, or a 3 liter H6 turbo build.

As for what I'm actually planning on doing, I'm looking for a USDM WRX 5 speed and an EJ207. Going to keep the engine and transmission stock, until I figure out what exactly I want to do with the car.

For all out, whatever you can imagine, money is no object, I'd do a 6 speed sequential manual WRC style, and a custom, one off, one of a kind H8 3.6 twin turbo engine. Heh, boxer rumble + V8 rumble. Or maybe even use the H12 F1 engine that Subaru had in the 80's.

I thought that H12 was an airplane engine?

A mid engine H12 Wagon would be...incredible.

There was a 12 cylinder small displacement engine on ebay for a while, claiming it was a Subaru Formula 1 race engine. I didn't know Subaru made airplane engines?

Subaru started out as an airplane company. Hence the B-9 and B-5 designations. They're banned from making airplanes because of that little skirmish we call WWII.

They still make the engines for airplanes.

However, you will never see a horizontally opposed airplane engine rev faster than 4 grand. They're just not designed that way.

Wiscon_Mark

oh they do? I guess they were only banned from warplanes or something like that.

Theyre banned from building airplanes, not engines. If another company decides to put one in an airplane, its no big deal.

My realistic setup would be thus. Full 05 STi driveline, PPG gears in the 6 speed, mated up to a stage 4 EJ22t built by slowboy racing. Toss a set of JDM version 8 STi heads on there, 20g turbo, and a standalone EM, and you're in like flint.

Edit/clarification: I choose 05 STi due to the 5x114 hubs, less wheelbearing issues and theyre theoretically stronger. I opt away from the 06 STi because of the drive by wire stuff, its an Fing hassle to swap.

Twin turbo my H6 and swap for an STi or similar 6 speed.

Or

EJ20 Twin Turbo w/ 5 speed.

Full STi WRC car conversion. So gutting my car and putting in all the wrc stuff. Got to keep the legacy body, 'cause shes so pretty.

I'm gonna end up sticking a WRX engine and gearbox in mine, then adding in some Outback suspension bits, somehow get a WRX scoop on the legacy's hood, and rebadge it as a Legacy Sportwagon. It's getting WRX wheels within the next week, I seriously hope. :D

Sheepdog, I'm pretty sure all STis had drive by wire.

sheepdog - nice to know you've heard of SlowBoy...i'm sure Mike would be pleased to hear his company name is coming up on a Subaru forum from a member in Colorado

as for me...i have an EJ22T and i'm not sure what to do with it yet
i would love to do something really wicked and totally sleeperish with my car

i shouldn't brag...BUT i'm going to anyway...the club i'm a president of at school took a tour of his facilities and while we were there he let me drive his insanely quick Evo and hooked me up with a great media opportunity for the rally next year. SlowBoy sponsors Comrie-Picard so i will get to run a stage with him for the media introduction afternoon thingy

so back to the fantasies of BOVs and insane amounts of power

what should i do with my EJ22T?

stock ej22e with wide band 02 sensor, egr system, uprated valve springs and a rotex charger running spiffy engine management. Cheap engine parts and good fuel economy are most important in a modified daily.

I'm 90% sure drive by wire started in 06, distinctly because James and I spoke about how much of a bitch it would be to swap when I was there at ECS.

And bella, I talked to mike several times a while ago about getting an EJ22t from them, I even considered having them build me a motor before I discovered I didn't have any money  If he wants to sponsor a car in CO, have him send me an email, I'd be more than happy to spread the word ;)

Maybe I'll buy one and use it to direct power a supercharger, then hook it up to a little $200 beater. Can you say "14 PSI at idle"?
