Hey guys im currently stationed about an hour away from Tokyo, Japan with the Air Force and i am in the process of purchasing a 1997 Subaru Legacy RS twin turbo... it has approx. 60k miles and is in great condition... im pretty new to subarus but i have experience building old school hondas for autox and road racing... i know that this will be a whole new challenge, but ive fallen in love with this car and cant let it go... any help that anyone can offer(info is pretty scarce) would be greatly appreciated and i plan on sticking around and utilizing this forum to gain any knowledge possible to help with the build up... im mainly looking for the basics like what suspension would fit, turbo/intercooler setups, exhaust, and some other engine work... i dont plan on actually tearing apart the motor for any internal work for a while... thanks a lot and ill post up some pics asap for you guys

Welcome!

You have right there what many would consider a dream car. Congratulations. If you want to make the car handle better (and I think that you do) look into a nice set of coilovers from any number of manufacturers (Cusco, Tein, JIC, etc.).

thanks a lot... ive been looking at a few different companies and the only issue that im running into is the ole wife is putting me on a budget when it comes to this car b/c she knows that ill throw as much money at it as possible if im able to  haha... anyways im looking for something that is good yet fairly inexpensive(below 1k) as far as coilovers go... id even be willing to go the spring/shock combo to save some money as long as its a proven setup... i have a lot to learn about this car so ill be taking my time... thanks once again for the welcome... pics coming soon(host is being a pain)

Well, for a nice set of coils, you'll end up spending more than 1k. Worth it though.

As for turbo setups, I don't know much in the way of aftermarket stuff for the twin turbo motors; all I know is most guys go over to a single turbo setup.

I'm excited for pictures! And for another person in japan who you can beg to send you parts when you can't find them anywhere else haha.

welcome to the site man, thats going to be one sick car! You gonna have it imported back over to the US, or you going to be staying in japan-land with it? Either way, sounds sick man!

Oh yeah, do you speak/read Japanese? That might prove helpful in your search for parts over there.

Want some wicked cool USDM lights to make your wagon way cooler than everyone's cars over there?

There were a few people that joined up on here but haven't really been around lately. There are two new zealander's riding on 20" wheels and they both have twin turbo'ed legacys. Might want to scroll back through the readers rides I and find their emails.

If you can get it on a C-130 transport to Fort Cambell I'll get it in great running order for you.

Welcome to the board. You should be able to get all your answers here.

awesome... thanks for all the replies guys... i dont speak any japanese, but i already have a few connections over here with some guys who do and i will be trying to learn some as well... so far i have 3 more years here, and if the oppurtunity comes up it looks like i will extend it anther 3, and by then i should figure out a way to get this car back in the states... well if most people go to single setups then that would suit me good... ive never really liked twin turbo setups and you tend to get more top end power with a single anyways(also fewer parts = less that can go wrong)... i would like to save a little bit of money with a coilover sleeve/shock combo, but if there are no proven setups then it looks like i will have to throw the money down on a whole coilover setup and tein is looking pretty good to me right now haha... is there any suspension that will swap over like from a wrx or anything? or do i have to stick with legacies? usdm headlights dont really interest me that much... im going for a clean stock-looking appearance with a few aftermarket goodies to show off... oh and i have a weakness for carbon fiber... im not sure if i mentioned it or not but the car is a sedan and not a wagon

P.S.- oh and if anyone can tell me any info on the motor(EJ20tt i believe) that would be greatly appreciated... im mainly looking to see if there are any better geared transmissions, heads that flow better, if the internals are forged, and if its possible to swap any larger blocks in there without too much hassel... i dont really want to have to custom-fab too much up for this one... thanks!!

Don't bother swapping for WRX suspension bits. That Bilstein suspension that's in there right now is pretty much top-notch. The best way to improve upon it would probably be full coilovers or adjustable struts and uber-stiff springs, which would probably run you about the same amount of money. But if you're serious about track flogging, it'll be worth it.

I can attest to that. I'd look at a bigger front swaybar and getting an alignment with more negative camber (pretty easy with the factory camber kit) for handling mods. It's worked pretty well for me.
