i took out the stock grill in my 98 legacy gt should i paint it silver and put it back or should i replace it with something different my legacy is red and im doing a red and silver scheme on it

Its really your call, but i dont think a silver grill on a red car would look too great. check out some JDM grills on ebay, they have some pretty sweet ones on there that would match with your car better than a painted grill. But in the end, its really what YOU want to do. Just make sure you use some good paint, and use LOTS of layers..rather than one big layer and making it drip! Clear coat is also good! Good luck man!

some pictures of your car would help to get idea what you've done so far with the silver and red theme. I would go with an all red grill like i have

But my opinion is a little biased

+1 on the red grill... i like that a lot! Looks very good. What did you paint it with?
ah_alex_
12-24-2006, 05:20 PM
I bought the car with it like that, i thought they were all like that until i found this site and discovered ive got a Outback bumper/grille.

i saw those grills on ebay i like them but at the same time im tryin to work with as little money as possible so i guess i just have to see what happens
d1giPhux
12-24-2006, 05:23 PM
You could always take your stock grill, or buy another stock grill, or a 'like jdm' grill off ebay pretty cheap and paint it red. Post some pics up of your car though so we could get a better idea of what it looks like currently!
^ BTW that is cool that you have a outback bumper / grill on your car! Makes it look unique!

The bumper grille combo was one of the reasons i bought the car, looked sick and i love big foglights
d1giPhux
12-24-2006, 06:06 PM
Yea man, those foglights must help out a lot. When you put your highbeams on, do the foglights go out? I need to make my foglights stay on when the high beams are on.. gotta figure out how to do that, i dont like how they turn off, any extra light i can get is needed in these dark woods!
alterian

yeah mine do turn off when i hit my brights did you see my pics
ah_alex_
12-24-2006, 06:26 PM
I cant see your pics, i dont no how you put them on but you are probably going to have to use photobucket.com
my foglights go out with my brights as well which i dont like.
Ive got silverstar headlight bulbs that kick ass (highbeams turn a highway to daytime lol) and i wanted to get new fogbulbs to go with them but my drivers side fog broke so now that money will be put toward a new light assembly and hopefully ill have enough in the bank to do new bulbs at the same time.

sorry my bad i saw the pics, i like the rims but not feeling the silver decals. I would go with an all red grille and color the front and rear lip and side skirts red. Will look really good in my opinion. All the painting maybe cost you $40 and 5 hours DIY labour. Not a bad price to pay for theresult you will get.

I went to Napa for the paint. Get the color code from your engine bay. There is a plaque that will tell you a bunch of info, its beside the drivers side strut tower. I do believ my color code is 946 (Rio Red) and yours should be the same. Also you will need some grey primer and some clear coat. This link should help https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?p=3 ... ght=#38138 (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?p=38138&highlight=#38138)

Dude this is just me, and my own opinion... but there are a lot of other things I would worry about before getting a huge wing put on your car or changing out the mirrors.
First and foremost, I think you should remove all the stickers or "vinyl" from your ride. Especially the silver flame things on the side. Stickers just add unwanted attention from ricers and clutter up the lines of the car.
I personally like the rims that are on there right now. If I had your Rio Red GT, I'd first wash the thing, then clay bar it, then do a paint cleaner, polish and finish with a carnuaba wax. It will look like two different cars!
Once you see how beautiful it will look all shiny without the stickers, I'd paint the sideskirts, and front and rear valances to better match your ride. Also I'd get that fender replaced. If you really wanted to keep going I personally think the red/white JDM taillights would do your GT some good.
It's your own ride and obviously your choice of what you want to do with it. I'm not trying to flame you, or tell you what to do, its just a suggestion. Everyone has there own style and taste, stick to your own.
Good luck with your ride I wish I had a GT!

Agreed. It's funny to see all the ricers around here putting big unpainted bodykits on their cars when they have damage on the car that they could be fixing instead.

+1 on removing the decals and cleaning the sucka up.
I'd do a H&R/KYB combo too (AFTER the fender).

wow...
please take the advice of many people that have replied to this thread.
Hacking off the muffler might make it "sound better" but is in no way helping your engine... There are many aftermarket muffler options that would be better than nothing. Hell, you can get a straight through glass-pack on Ebay for $1.88, so it can't be lack of money behind your reasoning.
alterian
12-26-2006, 01:49 PM
how will it hurt my motor
badbasser98
12-26-2006, 01:52 PM
Not sure if the effects are as drastic on more modern engines (guess that depends on the ECU's ability to adjust the fuel mixture). When you cut off the muffler, you decreased the backpressure. Doing so can cause the engine to run lean, over a period of time you can fry the valves at the very least...
alterian
12-26-2006, 01:55 PM
so what kind of muffler should i put on to keep the sound but not f up the backpressure

Oh man, thats GHETTOOOOO. Jeez man, u shouldnt be doing things like that to such a nice car. I mean, who the hell does that! HAHAHA. How old are you man? Is this your first car?
Look into some new muffler options PRONTO! The stock LGT muffler is nice.. i mean, its not RICE loud.. but hell, ur car isnt exactly super fast either, so why do you even want it to be loud? If you want some loud shit can, check out ebay, there is all sorts of cheap options.. but man, thats just ass backwards from the woods redneck ghetto! almost as bad as drilling holes in the exhaust! HAHAHA.

well honda's have a lot of stuff you can put on them. these are not hondas.. they are expensive cars. Maybe you should sell it and pick up a honda instead.. because then you could do a lot more to it. I know when i owned a crx there was TONS of stuff to do, thats half the fun with those cars! You can do a lot to these cars, but its going to cost you time + money + research. Good job on selling the accord though, out of all the honda's i owned, i hated the accords. I loved my crx and civic.. but accord. *PUKE*.

Hey now...Accords are good cars.
The Legacy might not have a whole lot of aftermarket labeled to its name, but you can do a lot with Impreza parts (suspension, performance) since Subarus are all so close in build. You also have to be creative. JDM is the best way to go for cosmetic modifications.

Yea, they are okay if you like bloated, fat cars, that dont go very fast without massive amounts of modifications. They are pigs. Out of all the honda's ive owned, i only had one accord, and i hated it. I think the older accord were nice, up until 93, and then when the 94 models came out, i think they just became crap. I had a 97, it was a fun car for a while, then i just got sick of it. After almost being stolen 4 times (because they are so easy to steal), i was just sick of it, and GLAD i got rid of it. NEVER-EVER again will i think about buying an accord. Its the most pathetic car honda has ever made in my opinion. the crx.. well thats another story.. now THATS a car to rave about!

If you hack off the muffler like you've done, I would HIGHLY suggest at least getting some pipe bent and get the exhaust exiting from behind the bumper. It'll also improve the sound as I imagine it is resonating quite a bit. There's a hand ful of people running mufflerless exhausts, and it does sound good I think, but exhaust fumes entering into the car is no bueno.
As for the gauges they are pretty cool. Mark has a write up on his set. But when there's still time on the auction, they aren't yours yet.
As for your car in particular, I agree on the silver wing rip flame whatever doo dads are pretty strange. If its a rip scheme it could be cool, but its not large enough and pulled together well enough and right now looks kinda scatter brained.
As for cleaning supplies, clay bars, carnuba wax, all that is at any auto store. Hell, some places are even carrying Zymoel which is some pretty great stuff.
I think its kind of rediculous that SL-i is supposed to be friendly, but you're getting quite a bit of flaming. This is what I think you should do. Make an entirely new post, with pictures of your car. Then put what you want out of the car, and some of the ideas you have to get there. Right now you have your ideas all over the board. Give one place to make it more concise.
Subarus are not hondas, they sound and look much better, even if they do both things at a slower rate  I would suggest really thinking through your mods. I've done a few and then regretted them later and switched back (or am in the process of).
