Well, recently I obtained the stock STi spoiler from an '04 Impreza that was demolished in an accident. For a very reasonable price. I'm aware that mounting this thing will not be easy, so I'm gonna document it all for the benefit of others. This is going to be slow going, i'm giving myself a timetable of 18 months because I am poor and still in school.

My experience with body work is somewhat limited, I've done my grill twice and sanded, primed, and painted my mirrors. Gonna take my time and do it right.

Materials:
1x 2004 Impreza WRX STi rear spoiler--Got it
1x Extra BD Trunk--Still searching
Bondo, appropriate sanding, cutting, and drilling tools--Got 'em
A freind that's good with photoshop--Got it, pics coming soon.

Why would it take any bondo? shouldnt you just have to line it up and drill, hopefully you can work around the trunk support stuff.

Pictures! Also, in case anyone wanted to know, the spoiler is mounted with 12 bolts, there is a radio antenna running through it, and the brake light looks easy enough to wire in.

shazapple: the curvature of the back of my trunk looks like it is slightly off the curve made by the underside of the spoiler. The whole thing needs paint anyway, as it is blue and my car is....red.

What year Impreza is that from? If it's from a bugeye or newer and went right on, this should too.

blackgtbeauty: thanks for the honesty. I'll admit it's not a subtle look.

Exactly. To me it seems you'd have to do a fair amount of body work (lika a kit and such) to balance out with the wing.

And as we all know, that's not cheap with a BD/BG.

Yeah, I think it is.

Looks kinda weird you know? but it would look somewhat ok, if you had like the impreza widebody.

Coming back from the dead...
I got bored and laid the STi wing down on the trunk. The leading edge lines up perfectly, but the sides begin to rise away from the trunk a few inches from the sides of the trunk. This will take some work, I'll update slowly but surely.

It did not look as out-of-place as I had thought it would.

methinks you'll need an outback front bumper to pull this off. The wing is too "heavy" for the rear. It really takes the balance away. I think it could look good for sure, but just needs that balance. If you could find some of the JDM bumpers with the large openings for FMIC's, it could look real good as well.

 The last PHPBB forum I posted this update to allowed me to resize the pictures with the "IMG height=600 width=800" inside the IMG tag. Any reason that this one isn't?

Anyone know the resize code?

yea this is the old phpbb. you won't find those new fangled resize codes here!

How many bolts to hold down the spoiler?

Huffer

Maybe if you had a huge ass scoop and flared fenders it would work.. but it seems too big.

Maybe the WRX spoiler would be better?

How many bolts to hold down the spoiler?

haha 12 bolts. Also, I'll need to make 2 holes for the antenna to pass through--another reason I wanted the wing, so I could shave the stocker off.

I kinda like it... then again I also drive a honda with big wheels

you need a GT rear lip! that would help.

does the 2.5RS wing look OK on our cars? anyone have any pics? that's what I want... I know it's not exactly the right size but I think it's close enough.

yeah, the more i look at it, the more its out of place. The RS wing might be a better idea ..smaller than the STi one.

RS coupe or sedan?

MXS

coupe

I measured one the other day (was parked near me at autocross), the "top" of the wing (closest to the window) is about the same width as the Legacy trunk in that same spot... the "bottom" of the wing is about an inch narrower than the "bottom" of the Legacy trunk.

I could swear that I had seen pic of the coupe spoiler on a bd legacy, but that was 2 years ago, and I haven't found it since. It was the original plan, but I found this wing cheaper.

the RS spoilers...MAYBE. The STi spoiler...no. Just my opinion. If it helps any, I'm pretty sure the V5 STi Spoiler was confirmed to fit a while back, but I can't remember who did it.

I'm doing this after i get the WRX exhaust installed, btw. And i'm glad it irritates some people--it should. Every time someone sees me, they'll be like "ugh, it's THAT guy."

And the V5 was confirmed to fit on a BE. The RS coupe spoiler is not as wide as my trunk lid, it would leave a little bit of gap at the ends...not the look I'm seeking. Plus the wing was cheaper than all the stuff I found on NASIOC.

just so you know WRX exhaust is totally quiet, absolutely

now the STi, exhaust, now that will give you a bit of a purrrrrrrrrr :D

just speaking from personal experience

deadlydave

Yea, it was quiet on the WRX, so I figured it'd be quiet on my BD. However, it was free :-D. I may just save up for a different muffler to replace the stock one and wait. Of course, my first paycheck is only weeks away, so I'll be ordering the paint for the wing soon :-).

Edit: I've heard it whistles a little when you let off the throttle, which doesn't bother me, I just want to be prepared for it, did yours whistle at all?

Yeah...I like that RS Spoiler...What did you do to mount it? I have an OB front bumper and once my front end is all matching with an RFRB Grille and JDM projectors....It will look badass

I'll give it that the STi wing doesn't look great but there has to be a better option for a tall spoiler. The 2.5 RS one looks alright but to me, I don't think the angle of the sides of spoiler play well with the angles on the car.

I was thinking something like this maybe.

Do want! The wing doesn't look too bad really, just needs a bigged scoop to balance it out a bit.

Idk I feel like there is something missing from the back of it, granted the car looks amazing
