hey guys heres my first subaru... i bought it for a cool $2500 from a guy here in Japan who comes highly recommended... so far my plans include lots of power under the hood(shooting for 400-500 range), enough suspension tuning to make it stick like spilled soda, and a few interior mods to make it a little more comfy(for the wife) and purposful... no body kits will be added- the external treatment it will get is a lowered stance and a few carbon fiber goodies... this will be a track car that will see a lot of track time(gymkana and road racing) and i would like to see how it does on the wangan and possibly some drifting lol... any comments good/bad are welcome as well as any suggestions... thanks!!

So.... sexy.... Make sure if you lower it and remove the mudflaps to check for people in the states that may want them. I know the JDM mudflaps are a hot ticket here. Looks really great as is, though I don't think 400-500 AWHP is really feasible. I've only seen a handful of 400+ horse power subaru's at the wheels.

Siiiick. That car looks great already, you can only go up from there. You should look into picking up some STi seats for it, and recover the door cards, it would look super classy.

As for HP, for the power levels you're talking about you're going to have to do a significant amount of work, including ditching that twin turbo motor for a single turbo variant. Definitely doable though, you just need persistance and money

Could you mail me one just like yours?

You really can't...

You should probably just give me your mudflaps and grille.

Oh really? My friends x brother in-law was stationed in Okinawa for 3 years. He had a syliva s13 brought over here. Shipping was FREE for the armed service.

And was it legal? I doubt it.

For you to have a legit JDM vehicle over here, you must have it crash tested, which means you have to buy 6 of them: 5 to crash, and one to drive.

It has to be 15 years old IIRC. Theres a bunch of JDM cars around here. Or you can bring it over in pieces and register is as a kit car

You didn't say anything about it being street legal. I asked if he plans on bringing it over, you said you really can't. I would bring it over and it would be a track car. Anyway I doubt this thing was street legal, I'm sure it can be done though. Theres s kid around here that has a Honda Integra Type R RHD. I never met him before so I don't know what is what.

thanks a lot for all the compliments guys... im not sure on how its done exactly but i know of numberous people who PCS back to the states and bring their cars with them... the main concern is emissions and going through a port in california is almost impossible to do... ive been told that i can go through canada or the east coast and ill be fine... however this is just word of mouth and nothing is for certain as far as im concerned... i will do my best to bring it over though... btw i will be throwing most of the money under the hood and im pretty confident that i will reach my goal... keep the comments coming guys

Wow! Beautiful Legacy. In my honest opinion, your car is perfection. This is exactly how I wish my Legacy looked, same color even. I love The JDM trunks, and those aero mudflaps, the whole thing just looks sweet! I wish the United States Market Legacys looked just like this.

$2500 bucks that is amazing. My younger brother is fluent in Japanese I'm hoping next time he visits that he'll bring me home lots of goodies from a wrecking yard.

Is it pretty fun to drive with the twin turbo engine? I would imagine it'd be quite fast from the factory.

Motor on, I'm very jealous

HAH! Suckers.. in Canada you can import RHD vehicles and drive them legally and when/if you get pulled over, the police are usually really nice and friendly to them too! A few guys in the Toronto Subaru Club have Skylines.. fuckin' sweeeeet!

Thats correct, but the legacy had already been crash tested in the united states so you can bring them over. A different engine shouldn't matter. Making sure it passes USA emissions is the only thing the car needs.

A USDM has. JDM Legacy would have to be retested.

Here's a list of the legal imports that have already been tested:

The twin turbo's are tough to build up power-wise. You have to spend a lot on EM (think Motec, Autronic at the least).

And no, you can't import that car into the US, not even as a rolling shell.
You'd have to cut the front off it, and bring it in in sections. I've looked into this, into bringing my GF8 over from New Zealand.

The JDM original cars have lighterweight bumper beams, and do not meet NHTSA's crash specifications. In order for them to be tested to see if they meet the specs, you literally have to supply NHTSA with 15 identical models for them to demolish.

That's what Motorex did, when they began importing Nissan Skylines.

The only other way to bring the car into the US is as a track-only or show-only car. Subaru America have the WRC 22B registered that way. It's not road-legal.

As for other marques, like Porsche, the model they sell here is the same safety-wise as the overseas model, hence why you can import them. Porsche already did the work for their customers.

Subaru America have no interest in allowing enthusiasts the same privelege, they want people to buy the NEW cars.

joining the military wouldnt be a bad thing... its just not for everyone

i just threw on an intake and i can feel the gains like crazy... this car is simply awesome... now there is almost no lag between the time it takes the first and second turbo to spool up... i took a little joy ride on a road that winds around the runway here and this car is a blast to drive... im going to look at entering some gymkana(autocross) events that are coming up soon... but first im getting some coilovers and i think im going to do a little exhaust work to get the turbos to spool up quicker
-Josh

I would look into like a Apexi S-AFC2 or something of the same line when doing the intake and exhaust. The benefits may be larger for you having a TT. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

definatley something ive looked into doing here soon... intake, turbo-back exhaust, fmic, blow off valve, boost/oil pressure/exhaust temp. gauges, SAFC, injectors, fuel pump, and boost controller are the engine mods im looking into for the next few months... then after a lot more research id like to go to a big single turbo setup with stand alone engine managment... not only will the SAFC allow me to control fuel to some degree, but it will allow me to vent my blow off valve into the atmosphere instead of a recirculated setup

Why would you want to do that? Do you mean that the computer can compensate and adjust for the lost air so that you don't run rich in between shifts?

adw_terror
01-06-2007, 07:13 PM
its a route im looking at because not only is it one less hassle and one thing less that can go wrong, but it would make the blow off valve more audible... and yes the safc has a function(decel. fuel adjustments i believe) which will allow you to compensate for the overly enriched air/fuel mixture each time you let off the throttle

Pointless. If you're in Japan, you have access to all the best in tuning for the Subaru. USDM is a waste of time.

Wiscon_Mark
01-20-2007, 01:16 PM
USDM is exhaust is restrictive, overly catted (I can pass inspection easily, I'm sure, with a high flow cat - hell some people have done it catless).

You don't want it.

You have GOT to be kidding me.

When I was in Osaka for a month I saw all kinds of "old school" rides including 1st gen Skylines, Subarus... and just about every single one was tailored individually.

haha theres plenty of stuff, but im just trying to get through the language barrier to find it lol

well i ended up picking a full set of cusco zero II coilovers with adjustable pillowball tophats... only ran me about $600 which wasnt too bad... i was having some rubbing issues in the front so i grabbed some 5 mm spacers and rolled the fenders out a little bit(also had to hammer in part of the wheel well on the inside)... heres a few pics of the car with the new suspension:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

soon im looking at rolling the fenders out a little bit more, replacing the 5 mm spacers up front with some 25 or 30's, and purchasing a set of these in gold:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

edgeracing.com has them for $550 shipped for a set of 17x8's... not a bad price at all

also since my last post ive installed a blitz boost gauge, FET turbo timer(because the wiring was already done from the previous one that was in there), and a buddy of mine helped me fab up a 3" catback exhaust with a turndown right before the rear diff... it sounds pretty mean but soon we're planning on fabbing up an entire 4" downpipe setup that connects to the catback... im going to wait until JCI comes around(september) so i dont have to worry about passing... after the wheels im looking at a break upgrade, short shifter, recaro seats, safc II, and boost controller... right now as it sits the boost gauge pegs 1 bar which is about 14.7 psi... looking to go up to 18 before upgrading the turbos or going with a single setup

well, its been a while since ive updated this thread... i got some new goodies and got some pictures so i figured id share with you guys... heres a few i took tonight at the gas station here on base while i was checking tire pressures

the wheels 17x8 and are made by VES sport? haha ive never heard of them and cant find anything on google, but theyre light and they look like rota boosts which is what ive been trying to get for a while... the only damage at all is a small chunk out of the lip of one of them and i plan to blend it out... they came wrapped in some dunlops that ive never heard of and have about 25% tread left, sooo the wife and i got a full set of new kumho 711's for a steal... we got the whole wheel/tire/tire package for ~$475!!!!

the offset of the wheels is +38 which brings them out flush with the side of the car... mmmmm yummy

blitz blm boost gauge ive had for a while now... absolutely freakin love it!! been wanting one since they first came out and im taking it with me when i get rid of the car haha... since my buddy and i fabbed up the midpipe the boost peaks at 1.5bar(~22-23 psi)... now im looking at downpipes hehe

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

and a quick sneak peek at the new tires... should last a few thousand miles haha
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

in the last few months ive also added a blitz boost controller, momo steering wheel, apexi turbo timer, HAD a BRIDE bucket seat but its out now, new headlight and fog light bulbs, swapped cusco coilovers for megan racing track coilovers, new brakes, kartboy short shifter, sti industries carbon fiber front strut tower bar, 10" pioneer sub enclosure and 300 watt amp, and the 3" midpipe mentioned earlier

So when are you going to go single turbo?

i dont think ill be going that route anymore... ive thought about it, but its just wayyy too much work... i did find, however, a mod that will make my sequential setup a regular twin setup... ill be trying that soon and depending on how the powerband goes, i might keep it that way

Don't make me fly over there and hurt you! It's a weekends worth of work and SO f'ing worth it it's not funny!
I've done a very detailed write up that should help you on your path to single turbo glory, Found HERE (http://clubsub.org.nz/forums/index.php?topic=24206.0).
You should be able to do it for well under $1000 US, and should have no problem finding the parts.

Also the parallel mod is NOT a good idea! Not at all, you need a new ECU to do it properly, and it's a restrictive laggy setup.
The turbo's are not made for it, the up-pipes are certainly not made for it.. basically you'll be all lag till 4500 rpm.

Anyway, that car is bloody hot, i love it. I wish people had that much style with the RS's here (NZ)...
