Fuel milage

My BE got around 30 mpg in town, I didn't drive with a lead foot, usually shifted at 3,250 rpm, or shifted at 2,250 rpm, depending on traffic, and how fast the speed limit was. On the freeway, my BE would get around 35-37 mpg, usually cruising at 60 or 70.

My BK, and remember it had crappy spark plugs when I got it, was getting 15 mpg, around the city. I haven't driven it long distance yet. The spark plugs have been changed, as well as the wires, and everything is tight. I'm still only getting 20 mpg, though. Does the EJ25D just get crappy gas milage or what?

I took a bit of a trip tonight, I got about 25 mpg, Still not quite what I want, but it's better than it was getting yesterday.

What gas milage should I expect to get out of this car? It's a bit lumpy below 3,000 rpm, going to do the grounding mod as soon as I get the right wire and stuff.

What gas milage should I expect after doing an EJ205/WRX 5 speed swap?

my 97 Bk 5spd gets around 21-22

I just did the SeaFoam in the PCV and in the gas tank, so we will see if that helps at all...

mine also sucks below 2500 or so...

If you are worried about gas mileage, don't even bother getting a swap.

I think you are being over optimistic about the gas milage in your BE. Its heavier, had more HP and wasnt even rated to get over 30mpg highway let alone city.

30mpg in the city in a BE? Wow. I average 22mpg in Detroit. 16mpg for what I call the New York City cycle (you want bad gas mileage? Any car driven here looses about 3-5 mpg from it's city EPA rating).

I got 30mpg on one long leg of a highway trip, usually 25-27mpg mixed city/highway.

I used the trip meter and the reciept. When I filled up, i'd reset the meter. Once it had run down, I filled again, then put distance/gallons. I could go 440 miles on one tank of gas in my BE, and that's miles by the mile markers on I5, not the trip meter. Usually would fill up at about 330 miles, and have about a quarter of a tank left.

The BK is getting better. I've gone 200 miles and it says half a tank, I think right now tires are holding me back a bit. Once I get some better, balance tires, and WRX wheels, I'll be better.

As for the swap, I usually drive below boost levels, if I had a turbo car, so I don't actually think I'd have much difference in milage after a swap...

I get 17 mpg on the BE......but I guess im a spirited driver? The cruise control in this car is amazing though. I almost use no gas when i have it on. Maybe i can calm down with the lead foot and see how much i get.

that kinda mileage in a BE is unheard of... if those are infact accurate numbers, feel blessed. The only time I hit 30MPG was on a trip to Cape Cod two summers ago right after I had the new short block put in my car. I avg 23-26 city with a 4EAT. I've never run my car below 1/4 tank of fuel, but I can't imagine getting anywhere near 400 miles/tank. I think I might be able to squeek out 300 miles/tank in the summer.

That's the mileage I would expect out of a straight-4 with FWD and a manual tranny...

back on topic...
Depending on how you drive the car, the WRX engine would probably see 13-19 MPG city and you could hit mid 20's on the highway.

Or you could drive it like your grandma, and shift at 2500 RPM before the boost hits and get better mileage, but what's the point of doing a swap then?

I sincerely doubt you were actually getting that kind of mileage. My guess is that you had faulty trip odometer.

Anyways, 25mpg in mixed driving would be perfectly acceptable.

Here's what I usually get:

Winter:
22-24 city, 24-26 hwy

Summer:
25-27 city, 28-31 hwy

The difference between the eJ22 and EJ25 for mileage is pretty negligable. 2.2 might get 1mpg better on average.

If the trip meter was off, then how could I drive from Medford to Portland and halfway back, and still have gas left? It's 300 miles from Medford to Portland, and then at about mile marker 200 my tank would read 1/8th tank left. (It's 300 miles from Medford to Portland, then 100 miles from Portland to mile marker 200).

All I can think of was tires. I think the car came with slightly larger tires on it, I know the Odometer was off by a few thousand miles because the speedo was off, but I got new tires that were the right size, and still got good milage. o.O

That would throw your trip odometer off ;)

400 miles? That's nothing, honestly. With a 16 gallon tank, if you're getting 30mpg, you should get a lot more than 400 miles to it.

I can't seem to get 400 out of the BK yet. But, we'll see when I get some real tires on it, tires that are balanced, and have tread, and less rolling resistance, and weigh about a quarter as much (okay, maybe embellishing the last one a little).

The intake made a big difference, as far as I could tell tonight. I am feeling very sick, so I didn't go very far, but wow. Almost have to not touch the throttle, the speed kept creeping up on me!

I average between 23 and 25 mpg on my BH (mostly highway) - I would never be able to get 30 out of it.

The highest I ever got was 32mpg, mostly highway. One tank. I was getting 27-29 consistently last summer mostly highway, and then city was 24-26. Now I am lucky to get 20mpg city. And 23-24 highway. I don't believe I drive that much harder than I did last summer, I've always been a spirited driver, AND I now drive slower on the highway in general so I don't have to pass people as much. Maybe staying in the fast lane behind traffic cuts down enough aerodynamic drag to boost mileage? I dunno... I hate left lane drivers...

yeah, I just hit 21MPG last tank :shock: (driving to work and back, no highway, but avg spd is around 50MPH)

Its only been that low one other time. I am driving like my Grandma this tank and see if its much better or not... I know the air filter could use a cleaning, and will have to do that sometime soon.

Are you sure about that? I know STis on a track day would struggle to get that kind of mileage.

3/4 of a tank on your gas guage is usually not accurate.

I put in 9.25 gallons this morning at 270 miles, the tires are accurate because i've used my GPS to track my speed, the funny thing is that for the last tank the cruise control has not been working so i have been driving a little faster than normal.

My 95 gets about 26mpg or maybe slightly better. Can't complain, the engine needs a desperate overhaul.

I drive up steep hills, steep enought that you can't get the car to accelerate in third gear at WOT. So, basically, you're flooring it up this hill in second gear, get close to redline, then let off for a turn, then you have to climb back up through what's left of first gear, and powershift into second to keep moving at speed. :p

Coming down is more fun, as you can run all the way through 4th gear in like 4 seconds, but you can't because of the tight turns and dropoffs on each side.

Kinda like driving 45 mph on the freeway, with your right foot floored on the gas, and your left foot holding the brake down just far enough to keep the speed even.

even though i have 205/75r15 tires on a car made for 195/60r15 i still get around 300 miles per tank after accounting for the 12% increase in tire size. funny how my mileage didn't really change a whole lot after switching the tires over to the larger/heavier size.

my best tank was about 310 miles on the trip-odo which is around 347 actual miles after calculating tire size. that was 100% highway driving from Pittsburgh to Cleveland and back. i about shat myself when i saw the trip-odo turn to the 300 mark.

On my way home from South Carolina when i bought the car i averaged 29 Mpg... havent had it out enough in town to see what i get.


got my town milage now, 21.7mpg :roll:
