Well my motor finally went 5 days ago... what should I do now?

I'm looking at a 2.5 na motor swap, but I want to eventually turbo... so should I do a ej22t motor (if I can find one for cheapish) or do a 2.5 na motor swap with a turbo kit later on? I have about $900-1000 to spend.

Personally, I'd try to find a turbo motor, but it's unlikely you'll find one for under $1,000.

Don't bother with planning on turboing the NA motor bud. I'd look for some kind of turbo block, and match up those heads you have. Then we can worry about the turbo later. Call Troy, I bet he can track down an EJ22t block.

I think he has one that he was going to sell me for like $100, but it needs a rebuild. Here I'll just call you sometime in the next 32 minutes.

You have a phase 2 motor, I would imagine those heads couldn't bolt up to a EJ22T block? The spark plugs are in a completely different spot, though I don't know if that matters?

Sorry to hear about your motor. That's really lame that he sold you the car and it bummed out so quickly.

SVX longblock FTW? Unless you absolutely have to have an ODBII motor, you can find SVX engines for pretty cheap. Installing them, on the other hand, will be a pain.

And no, unless it's a 2.2, don't bother getting an NA longblock if you're planning on turboing it later. Just get an EJ22T and go from there. :)

Well technically I could get a 97 SVX motor which would be obdII, but ya I dunno.

What if I plan to only run 5-7 psi of boOst?

People always plan to run 5psi.
They never stick to it.

So don't plan to run 5psi. ;)

I mentioned the EG33 because they basically outperform a WRX engine. More torque, more hp, and a better curve. More displacement. plus, if you really want to make serious power, you can boost the EG33 with a supercharger or turbo.

EG33 will take a helluva lot more modding to work in the EJ engine bay than I think teh Korean is willing to do.

Keep in mind that it's 6" longer up front than an EJ engine and that means you'd be bumping the radiator :-(

I'd go with a new EJ22E shortblock for now, but that's just me.

If you have the funds, get a turbo block. If you just need your car back, replace the shortblock with a new version of the same thing you had before. It's a good little motor.

Pshh... It's not really modding unless you're hacking the frame to peices.

Well, if you want the radiator to fit....

Put it on the roof. Uber airflow + Max downforce!

You can run an STi block, even for a short while without boosting it. It'll run crappy, because of the low compression, but it'll run.

Cooling systems are funny, you could mount two series radiators under the car...

His car was running crappy before. I think he wants to fix the car.

Seriously, really think about how much money you want to invest in the car when all is said and done. Take whatever it'll cost to turbo your car, including the new block and labor for any installations and add $1000. This extra money is for tuning, various odds and ends like hoses and fittings and everything else to get it going. If its more than you want to spend, because in a few years, that car will be really hard to sell because there will be factory turbo charged legacys being sold used by then. So you'd really have to be dedicated to this particular car. If all that adds up and you still want to turbo, listen to some of the knowledgeable swap people. People who have actually done engine work, because they would know how it will likely run and where to source parts.

As sheepdog said. Troy Matta could probably find you the block no matter the which route, and if you stay NA, Matt Monson could probably help too.

There is currently a guy selling EJ22T heads for $75 + shipping. If you replace the block now, atleast you'd have heads for down the road if you are indeed going turbo.

an ej22e block should easily handle 5-8psi since the cylinder walls are quite thick when compared to an ej25. Not to mention that the 22 would be dirt cheap. I doubt that you can find a turbo long block in good shape for under $500 plus install cost and the inevitable unexpected expenses.

Earlier EJ22Es have forged internals too. Douglas Vincent (aka Reddevil) is running up to 13psi w/ NOS on a stock EJ22E block!

With good fuel management of course.

is it possible to run an EJ22 and have it be ODBII? When my EJ25D blows up, I want to do a turbo motor, but ODBII would hold me back. :( (Has to be ODBII to pass emissions)

Wiscon_Mark

Uh, yes. Run a 95+ EJ22E. It only changed design in 97. AFAIK the 95 and 96 EJ22 is the same as the earlier ones besides the alternator, Power steering, and A/C stuff.

What changed in 97? Compression Ratio (valve shape changed, making the engine interference) was upped, Single port exhaust, and Solid lifters instead of HLAs. There were some other small changes, I'm sure.

Plays_with_Toys

So if you have a single port exhaust, you have the changed cylinder shapes? So my motor is interference? Ahhhhh I hate having a cross-breed motor.

Wiscon_Mark
12-30-2006, 12:28 PM
Not necessarily. You also have HLAs.

Honestly, you don't know.
