Ash Tray?

So i bought an ash tray off of ebay. i originally had one of the pockets that pop out of place where an ash tray would be (beside the power outlet).

i went to put it in, to notice that theres nothing to stabilize the ash tray. what else do i need to make it an ash tray......or should i do the dual power outlet route?

There's a plate on the top that screws into the frame of the dash.

I have a spare one if you can't find yours.

Not sure what year you've got, but I just did a write-up on installing a dual power outlet in my '97. If you don't need the ash tray, and could use extra outlets, I'd go that route. The part was only about $8 from my local Subaru dealership.

I use my ash tray for loose change :grin:

To keep the change from making noise on bumps and such, I lined the inside of the ash tray with the lining they include in tool drawers to make the tools not bang and crash around.

great write-up, but as far I know, (as of March 1st, 2013) there is no such thing as even an aftermarket conversion for these things! And now MY OEM power outlet is dead as a hammer... there a way to replace it and possibly franken-fab one into the back of the center console?

um...did you measure the wires going to the cig lighter or are you just assuming that rusted contacts= dead outlet?

Probably just a wiring issue. I can check my parts bin and see if I have an extra though.

the only fuses I know of are the engine relays... and the cig-lighter is WEIRD>>> It registers HOT on a multi-meter, but it WILL NOT power ANYTHING!!

ive found mine to be position sensitive, make sure the contacts are clean and whatever it is you're plugging in is clocked properly. IE twist the plug and see if it makes contact.

Mine did that when the fuse was blown. The same fuse works the power mirrors. Its in a panel near the floor by the driver's door.

and discovered it's not a cig-light/Power outlet... it's a cig-light ONLY... from a 96 model.

How many volts does it put out then? That does not make sense that subaru would use a stepdown/ stepup transformer for the sole purpose of a cig lighter.

it's what was used. Getting an aftermarket dual-port replacement, so it makes no diff.

okay, what do you want me to say? that while I can hook up a multi-meter and figure out if there's current, I have no *censored* idea what it means or how to translate the fact the needle goes from resting on the left hand side of the screen to swinging all the way over to the other side?!
That is what happens. WHAT it MEANS, or how many *censored* volts that is I DO NOT *CENSORED* KNOW!

it's like being 5yrs old and seeing the needle on a tachymeter go from zero to swinging all the way to the other side of the gauge. D'ya know what it means? NO! D'ya know that the needle goes from one side to the other when the growly part of the vehicle whines? YES!
