View Full Version : higher watt bulbs in factory foglights?

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience running higher wattage bulbs in the factory fogs (BE specifically, but I doubt subaru changed the wire gauges/relay specs much on other models)? I was thinking of using Hella yellowstar bulbs, which are 85 watts.

I'll be running 100w's in the Hella driving lights, which has the wire harness to support it.

Upgrade the wiring, you should be fine.

Is the lense assembly glass or plastic in the BE fogs?

Either way, I would think it'd be able to handle the heat fine.

I just put 100 watt Hella Yellowstars in my factory fogs. I do have better wires (up until the plug/pig tail to the fog), better relay, and better fuse. The fogs are independently wired. Do you think anything bad will happen if I am just using the fogs when needed?

There's a chance of melting the housing if its made of plastic other than that it should be fine. What about doing a 55w hid?

I don't really want to spend the money on a HID. Would 85W have a chance of melting the housing too?

I really doubt you'd melt the housing. I've had no problems with 100watt bulbs in my high beams over the last 3 years. I mean, think about it, you put headlights in the oven and they're fine. Bulbs generate good heat, but I doubt it's in excess of 300 degrees, especially with the car moving and air outside the housing cooling it.

I used 100w bulbs in everything from the stock foglights to the PIAA driving lights I have now for a few years (all running the right wiring harness btw). Never had a melting problem.

Are the stock fogs on the BE glass or plastic?

I would assume plastic. You don't see many glass headlamps. Should be able to tell by tapping on them.

Judging from pictures, the CAN/US '00-'02 non-Outback BE/BH had plastic foglights. The '03-'04 non-Outback BE/BH had glass. I don't know about the Outback.

The Outback is glass. We have a 00 Outback and I have a BG Outback fog light in the garage.

I can now report back that YES 100 watt bulbs in the stock plastic BD/BG/BK fogs will melt/distort the lenses. I took mine off to clean and there is slight distortion in the same spot on both fogs.
