dyno tuning

all right, got some mods done. love the feel, love the sound. all is good.

but i wonder if i'm missing out on some of the advantages of the parts i've changed. ie; new intake, exhaust setup, etc. i know i can reset the ecu, but how much is that really changing the fuel maps and such?

to the point, is getting a dyno tuning a good idea if i feel it's affordable? is there much power at all that can be brought out of the ej25, or what? i'm not really sure what to expect.

anyway, if anyone has much experience, lemme know. it sounds like a fun time.

You would have to install an AFR controller, and have it tuned.
Just be aware that any time you have to reset the ECU, the AFR will have to be tuned again.

Resetting the ECU reloads a base map. You should do it. It does make a big difference.

As for dyno tuning, you'd need engine managment first. Otherwise the only way to really control your ECU is with the throttle.

There aren't many performance mods on the NA engines that ARE cost effective...

You can get a Apexi S-AFC2 or Neo on eBay cheap. When I had my car dynoed it was running rich due to the intake. He said I could get another 5hp through out the whole power range. 5HP isn't much, but I think I would have noticed a difference with the mods.

It will help but won't solve the problem totally.

ecu has been reset after each mod....no worries there.

the shop i was considering uses greddy e-manage, which i thought plugged into your obd-II port and could be override the base maps. maybe not....

i was thinking the tune might make the car run more balanced and smooth. dealing with A/F issues with an AFC makes sense, i thought it could be controlled by the emanage, though.

E manage is doable, but not necessary, nor cost effective with your current mods.

Maybe if you were going to do cams or something.

The emanage will work, though it doesn't play nice in some instances.

The S-AFC has the nice readout, and is more portable than the emanage.

Some 02 RS owners had huge problems with the E-manage.

The ECU may or may not learn around it - the self-correcting ECU's were introduced in 1999 on the Impreza. No idea about the Legacies.

Emanage is a complete piggyback. It runs in series of your ECU and interprets the signal coming to and from the ECU according to the settings programmed to it.

That's how most of the others (like PerfectPower 6) piggybacks works as well.

For your light mods, you wouldn't be seeing significant gains to warrant the cost of the EM and dyno tuning.

You could try a ProECM chip, those are around $85-100 used on the forums. Theyve been proven to add 4hp/7 ftlbs tq on the dyno on a stock car; it should work better with the boltons you have.

Only caveat is the ECU sometimes learns around it, so you'll have to reset your ECU once in a while.
