sylvania silver star

i have been asking around about HID and someone recommended me to just get the lamps by sylvania silver star and polish the lenses on the housings. obviously its going to be cheaper...but before i go ahead and buy a set i wanted to know what you guys think?
on the web site it listed the kind of lamps that will fit a 98 legacy:

mine lasted six months. both of them. just get normal bulbs and clean the housing.

In the week (yes, one week) between them 'blowing' from each other I bought a $7 basic one to replace it, and I couln't tell much of a difference. At least not enough to justify the price whatsoever.

Well I'v had both hyper white bulbs and HIDs that I currently have. It depends what your going for, if you just want white color then you should do whats mentioned above, if you want light output and are willing to pay more then get HID. Also, for HIDs, your particular light housing will blind the traffic infront and oncoming (uv been warned).

JDM Projectors are the best bang for buck upgrade. You can safely do HIDs in the projector housing (so you won't blind people as has been mentioned) in the future too.

Silverstars don't last very long because the filaments are "overclocked" to compensate for the coating that reduces light output.

Before I take the plunge for JDM projectors, I think I'm going to build a relay/wiring harness that will do a better job of running power directly off the battery on my car.

that's what I did. 100watt highs FTW!

And I've gotten to use them a lot more...no problem to report.

I'd go HID if i could but for my dads projectors in the 05 I threw in Silverstars and they are noticably better than stock. I like the Silverstars so far..

I have silverstars as well.. and no problems with mine so far.. they work great, and are better than stock. Also, you can find them in most stores, and they arent super expensive.

Silverstars are more expensive than their cousin, the Osram Silverstars (aka Sylvania Halogen Xtravisions) and the spectrum of light is less effective than the xtravisions. I also didn't think they were any brighter.

That being said, no bulb can make up for the piss poor design of the lens.

yep. I think that's why the Silverstars work so well in my dads 05. The projectors in the 05+ are quite nice.

one blew last night... after about a month of use.

here's my silverstar track record:

first set in the truck: 8mos
first set in scooby 10 mos
first set in tori's civic: 6 months
second set in scooby: 2 months. *
third set in scooby: 1 month

*H1s for the JDMs, tapped the rear of a neon (scuffed bumpers) day before they blew.

NEVER AGAIN!

what to buy today? i'm thinking about trying something like the new GE bulbs, anyone use em?

I got a set of silverstar's will put them in tomorrow, a friend of mine got them too and he says that they are fine and still work,its been a while now since he got them.

I had 1pr. SilverStars in my BD for two years with no issues... I have had them in my BE for the same length of time and have now put in 2.5 pairs and one fog. I see 3rd and 4th gen Legacy's with blown headlights all the time, I am starting to wonder if its a wiring issue...

Osram Silverstars FTW. That's what I have on the van after replacing them from Silvania SS. Much brighter; a little better in the rain. Need some 100w aux lights on the van :D

might, might not. It's not a terribly hard DIY and you can find junked projectors from various vehicles for cheap.

i changed the lamps today,i still dint had a chance to see what its like on the road.i was also suprised to see that the lamps i had were also sylvania!

Just a question, do you guys still have the black rubber boots that go over the back of the headlights to cover the bulbs from water?

My friends 93' L didn't have them and after a day of mudding, he comes to find out the bulbs blew from water getting to them.

Just a thought..

I do for the old headlights.

My JDMs have plastic covers instead of boots.
