hey guys i was out at the local super autobacs(for those who havent heard its like a walmart full of aftermarket car parts  ) and i found a set of headlight bulbs(H1) that were 100w and the color range was 6500 which i beleive will be a whitesh purplish color... thats about what im looking for... what i would like to know is would i have to replace the headlight wiring or should the stock harness be able to take it? thanks a lot

Chances are they're the "OMG 55W = 100W" supeR zeenon RaCiNg specials that don't actually draw any more current than stock. I'd be careful because those really suck, unless you care more about being seen, than seeing.

Just get some Hella 100w bulbs - they're awesome in my projectors.

how much more light do they put out and will they be fine with my stock harness?

A lot more, and no. You would have to set up a relay system with larger wire

You'll definitely need a harness upgrade. They are very bright.

Definately do a harness upgrade. It only takes some wiring and a couple of relays. You bulbs will get the power they need to really make their rated power, and you won't melt your stock harness. Win win?

Yeah, it's even an upgrade without upgrading bulbs.

i tryed doing a relay setup on my jdm lights last weekend with a friend and we just got way to confused and quit, i think it would help if someone did a DIY post on how exactly to do, cus from all the posts on here i got way to confused and a step by step guide would help out alot

Yeah, I'm also thinking whether I want to upgrade the harness for 100w high-beams.
I'm finally going to install projectors I bought last year, but with them still being plastic, is it safe to use 100w bulbs? D.Stern's lighting site says no...hm.
I'm also too lazy (and its been quite a while since I soldered anything) to do my own harness, so I'm wondering if any of the harnesses sold at the site mentioned above would work with ground switched system? (possibly with minor modifications?)

There are all kinds of plastics - for instance, Kia uses some horribly crappy ones. Have you ever noticed that those older Kia's turn signals shine white? That's because the sun has baked the pigment right out of the plastic!
I have had no problems with mine.

don't be a bitch, make your own harness. i love mine.

Is there a good diagram somewhere that one can use?
upd: some googling and I have found this
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks ... ingHarness (http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Headlights.shtml#WiringHarness)
Some wiring diagram and he sells them too. What I am confused about - is whether the thing in the center of the ground switched diagram is needed on a subaru. He says it is there to feed the power back to high beam indicator light in the dash. I thought that in subaru light switches energize the relay under hood, and I see no point in feeding power back to it....am I wrong?

Well, I decided to order one from dude at the link above. $44 bucks do not seem too high of price to make me freshen up my soldering skills.
I'll post back when I put it in.
Also, looking at wiring diagrams it seems that on 90's legacies one can use harnesses designed for power switched headlight systems with no issues.
One question - what are good places to attach relays to?

44 bucks?!
I think I did mine for about 10...
Anyways, which part of the relays are you talking about? The switch or the power source?

Yeah, parts are probably around 10 bucks. But to put them together I'd have to spend another 10-15 and spend at least an hour, and I don't enjoy soldering :)
Relays - I mean where to attach them physically in the engine compartment, not about power source.

oh...mine are just suspended by the wires...mine don't have mounting points and there really aren't any good spots that I could find without fabbing up a bracket.

my relays are mounted on the plastic hood over the housing vent.. just stuck a little screw in there...
it's not the ideal location, but it's all i could come up with.

I had a harness on my old Taurus; bought it on ebay for $25. Same deal as the SUVlights one (dual relay, I think it was 14g wire, etc.).
I burnt the connector from running 80w bulbs unknowingly (ah youth  ).

Did you upgrade wires going to high beams as well?
Do you guys know what gauge are those? They seem so thin and I cannot find any markings. If its 17ga I will probably leave them as they are, but if its 18ga, seems like they definitely need an upgrade...

I'm pretty sure the stockers are 18guage.
I used 8 guage wire
Yes, I did the high beams - that's what I have the 100w bulbs in. I also did the lows, since I had two relays, and I can always piggyback stuff off of the lows and highs.

8ga?! And you put those on low beam too?!
Just to double check, I'm talking about those wires that come with JDM projectors and actually go under the caps that seal the beams.

Oh. I didn't get any wires with the lights.

You mean you had holes in rubber beam caps?
Anyway, if you are positive that jdm wires are 18ga, I guess I have pull them out also.

My caps are plastic, not rubber.

So what you use to seal the wire hole?
Wiscon_Mark
02-08-2007, 12:38 PM
well, the wires pretty much filled it up - so I used electric tape to fill everything in.

Tested my 100w high beams yesterday. These are awesome. If I end up keeping JDM projectors, it would be for the high beams.
