i understand this thing is built like a tank, but what kind of potential does it have?

lets say i swap out my 2.5 for the 2.2T....

if, turbo'd, the 2.2t is only putting out 160chp, how much jazz do you really have to put into it to get good #'s? (i want 250+)

obviously a bigger turbo - ideally, one w'minimal lag and boosted to safely sustainable psi

bigger tmic - proabably an STi

new intake, exhaust, fuel pump, yada, yada, yada.....

what would i have to do to the 2.2T,non-tubro related, to get some power?

if the wrx 2.0 is more affordable for the power, then that's fine....the 22t just sound like a fun motor to build my ride with.

thanks

mike

What I been reading on LCO is that a good start is with a TMIC. I think they say that an intake and aftermarket headers are pointless. I'm thinking a larger TMIC, larger turbo, upgraded fuel system and a complete 3" turboback and I'm liking the AVC-S. Don't quote me on any of this, I'm still doing some reading myself.

yea its a tank, actually just hopped outa my friends car with this motor and some goodies. seriously, hes only running 9 lbs on a gt30 during break in and shifting at 4500-5000 and this thing is already a beast, and hes planning on going up to 20 psi as soon as its broken in.

u can check his car out here....

but yea top mount, turbo, 3 inch axle back, and u could easily be good for 250. and to be safe you could go with the eagle rods and wisco pistons like my buddy dan did with his build. hes still using the stock header, stock heads, and reground delta cams for his build.

also, if u search good enough, you should be able to find a eg22t at a junk yard for under 300 no problem....

the benefit of the EJ22T is that it is a CLOSED deck block. That means it's built better to handle boost. With the right pistons and internals, you can wick up the boost pretty high.

With the wrong parts, you will melt pistons, though cracking the block is unlikely.

The block is only part of the equation though.

how about this...

you build yours first... then I will do the same thing you do... after Im sure which way is better

heres a question tho...

would It be worth it to buy a JDM TT motor, and convert it to single turbo (other than all the wireing) would it be that hard?
I hear over there, they convert the TT motors to single turbo to make power...
what would you need to do that, just a single turbo manifold and your done?!?

IE, what If I bought something like this one on Ebay? I know TT wont fit because of the Steering, but how hard would it be to make it Single Turbo?!?

Here's what you do, get an EJ22T block, do a +1 over-bore with forged piston and some EJ20G heads. Then drop about 2k for a TEC-III SEM setup w/ MSD, throw in an upgraded FP and a set of USDM STI OEM 550cc yellow tops and a FMIC( if you're going to do it right you need a FMIC). Put in a Monster 16G or maybe even an 18G (these turbos will have very good boost characteristics w/ this setup). A nice 3" TBE but leave the OEM EJ22T headers and up-pipe be (maybe throw in a CES racing cross-pipe though for good measure  ). Engine mounts and tranny mount are a must too.

That will easily give you a reliable 250 whp and about 270 wtq for daily driving and the ability to run more like 300 whp and 328 wtq on a good race tune.

Now you'll need to have a built tranny to handle all this power and torque you're going to throw down now (truuuust me). LW flywheel and a heavy duty PP and maybe a sprung 6-puck or an unsprung if you like it rough (you dirty bitch, you know you li..., uh, sorry). A dogbox would be best in this situation (cause blown gears are a bummer when showing your buddy that his STI is actually kind of slow), at the least a 1-2 dog with 3-4, and 5 synchro but a 1-2, 3-4 dog with a 5th synchro would be best, so have a couple, couple thousand set aside for that too.

Oh and now you'll need to be able to stop better since you're so fast too, and the suspension, can't forget that. We gotta be able to turn, and keep that power on the ground... shit, and gauges, tires, rims to fit my new bad ass brake kit, tickets, new girlfriend, jail ( what do you mean you only 15?!?!?!)..............

ej22t, what youre really paying for, as someone mentioned, is the closed deck block. The heads are kind of bad, a few RS owners have switched over to the normal ej25 heads for way better flow with their 22t block; I suggest you do that vs. intake. Add fuel and management.

A turbo setup from a WRX would actually match up pretty well to the ej22t; td04 pushing out factory psi (14), with the TMIC, running to a 3" exhaust, use wrx injectors w/ the adapters, and a wrx fuel pump...Best of all, it's way cheaper than going with an aftermarket turbo, etc etc. I'm talking about less than $400 and you have the entire setup, except the exhaust.

hmmm I wonder how much HP that would be good for...

The TD04 isn't an upgrade over the VF11 that comes OEM on the EJ22T. It's just barely bigger and not worth the trouble. Keep in mind that the TD04 is pushing 14 psi on a 2 liter, not a 2.2 liter.

The TD05H-16G is the easiest upgrade turbo to throw on the EJ22T. It also has the 90 degree inlet instead of the straight inlet like the TD04. You need to either run a different intake manifold to run the TD04 or else you need to fab a custom 90 degree inlet piece or clock the turbo.

Keep in mind that it's the SOHC EJ25 heads that are sought after, not the DOHC ones and they are NA heads so you'll have to fab oil and coolant return lines into the passanger side head. The EJ20G heads bolt right up and are already set up for turbo applications. You can also find them for relatively cheap too. The fuel rails on the EJ20G are setup to accept the side fed USDM STI injectors and upgraded injectors too which is nice.
