View Full Version : Thinking about painting my Legacy: Black, or yellow?

ryu_haneda
01-22-2007, 05:24 PM
My LGT looks great in green, but I'm thinking about an eventual repaint. My wife likes black and I like yellow. It would not be a problem for me to paint the car either way.

Should I stick with green (and save up for a repaint that paints the body and the gt ground effects green), or should I go with a black or yellow paint job?

[PUTS FLAME SUIT ON] Let the opinions begin!!!

Yellow REALLY dosent work with Legacies.

IMHO Legs look the best in black..

I don't see yellow working, no.

Black.. definitely not yellow. Maybe go for a custom gunmetal color or something.. i bet that would look pretty sick. Play with your options.. why are you going with such basic colors? Lack of money.. or are you doing this yourself? Something custom would be sweet.. but if you cant go that expensive route.. black would be very nice! Maybe you could get some nice type of pearl in there too!

Deep Sapphire Pearl...mmmm

you should keep the green color tho.. do something nice with the rims, and spend the rest of the $ on performance and such. I think green would look nice with some gold rims, paint the lips and such, and do some touch up? that would be the best in my opinion.

Yellow like the sonic yellow that is so rare in subaru land? I could see it only if you had dark tint, dark wheels, and some other accents, headlights or something done up.

d1giPhux

I dont think yellow would look good on these cars at all.. thats just my opinion tho. gold would look much better.

I say keep it the same and spend money elsewhere. Maybe do the door card mod and see if that satiates your color changing desires.

i think it would be really interesting to see the legacy in this kind of yellow:

http://www.gtpro.com/cardirectory/custl ... loswrx.jpg (http://www.gtpro.com/cardirectory/custlarge/new/carloswrx.jpg)

you do need to consider the fact that if you would like to sell the car,you will have a lot of explaining to do.
my other option, and the best one i think is black.but black is harder to keep clean then other colors...

blackgtbeauty
01-22-2007, 07:46 PM
I confess, I voted yellow

It would have to be a super clean cut, nice paint job to look right, and clean set of silver 17's, jdm tailights, proj. headlights and stock fogs.

However I think if you going to do any black on the outside (tint the windows, JDM fogs, etc...), then you'd need to go all of nothing with it (the black that is). A silver/black won't be as clean of a contrast for the yellow to work on.

I'm picky with color combos (that's why i'm spending twice as much for all black STi seats instead of half for blue/blacks :-?), but it's just my $.02.

Keep it green.

You could color-match the ground effects, but I like the look with them black, just hit them with some back-2-black or similar to get them looking nice again.

With the money you've saved, get yourself a set of gold v7 STi 17" rims and quality tires, 06+ WRX brakes and a nice set of struts+springs.

You'll love the green+gold look, and love driving it even more.

01-22-2007, 07:57 PM
Good point, but I guess it depends on what you lean towards more, show or go...

but with those parts you kinda get both.

mmmm... I heart 06 WRX brakes.

Sounds like someone is not to comfortable in their manlyness.

Do what you like don't listen to what we say. If you want yellow. do it
If you want black, do it. If you like the green, keep it.

For what its worth I think the yellow would be kinda cool.

I think id feel more manly in a black or blue color! hahaha.. i guess the sunflower yellow just intimidates me a little bit! LOL.. actually, im just paranoid of police.. and yellow seems to attract them like a bee to a flower. Although rally blue isnt much better either! Still.. it definitely could look nice if done correctly... id just choose a diff color if it was me. But do what YOU want. If you like yellow.. rock out with ur cock out!

If you like yellow, and have the balls to put up with the shit you'll get from people like d1giPhux, go for it. Toss in black ground effects and wheels, tint if you can get away with it where you live, and it'll look great, just expect some haters.

Here a crap-tastic one i actually made a few month ago when my BD was still my main project and I was exploring ideas:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g25/integra92red/Picture-0200991.jpg

I had actually toyed around with using the contour line (from headlight to taillight) as a seperator for a two-tone paint job, like silver/black, black/white, etc...

For all the yellow-hatin', it's the color of choice.

Ryu - why are you chunking down change to paint the car? Last time I heard, you were struggling to stay out of debt, and with the new engine, that was a large chunk of change.

edit. Nevermind, I re-read your original post that said "saving up". Good man.

PS. Both the colors you and your wife have chosen are ridiculously hard to keep clean.

If I had the money, I would be repainting (and deleting some things) this color:

True that. Soem guy had a ITR shell for sale in florida (98, #13_) somewhere I was interested in last year, but he wanted way too much for it.

On topic...

A Gunmetal/CGM would look nasty on a BD as well. It'd still be different and not stand out like the yellow.

the JDM tails on Yellow looks Perfect...

and black wheels look tight, bronze still my choice...

blackgtbeauty
01-24-2007, 09:53 PM
I think bronze wheels would make it color-cluttered. IMO bronze should only go on black and white vehicles. Maybe red depending on the vehicle.

I still think silver wheels, no tint, and JDM lights all around would be *tisss*

But, it's not my car.

I'm definatly not saying the green/black wouldn't look good. A green car with black wheels would be my second choice of all the previous options.

I would go with WRB myself. I would love to swap my Leg to a blue to match my last two cars.

I am not a fan of yellow - I thought that the Spec R1 looked like a Department of Transportation vehicle (similar color to the DOT vehicles here).

ryu_haneda
01-26-2007, 03:01 PM
I'm impressed by the number of yellow voters - I thought I'd catch way more flak for wanting to go yellow. The whole WRB color thing does sound very interesting as well, of course.

How hard would it be to actually repaint a car by yourself? Let's say I had access to the painting tools - what is the general painting process like?

Wiscon_Mark
01-26-2007, 03:15 PM
It would take a lot of time, and you would have to be very good at it to make it look good.

Ok, I gathered as much. (I'd seen stuff on tv like on Tuner Challenge on Speed channel where they take the cars into a paint studio and get geared up with the professional tools.)

What are some of the more affordable professional options out there? (I wouldn't mind doing something like a PPG paint service or something like that if the price was right.)

The most expensive thing is PREP time. If a shop quotes you 3 days to paint, and only one day of that is prep, then you're going to end up with a flakey job. You want a shop that is going to take the time to sand, fill, pop dents out, sand some more, etc until the surface is prepped for primer and paint.

+837 definatly.

If your going to cheap out on a paint job, you might as well paint the car yourself with a empty Windex bottle and latex house paint because it's gonna look just as bad when it's done.

Seriously. Looking at a bad paint job is like looking at the Mona Lisa after someone put their fist through it.

I painted one of my crx's for the first time ever back when i was like 17 years old, and it came out pretty good. As these guys said.. do some research, and look into it. Prep work is definitely the most important. 3m Red scuff pads are your friend, along with orbital sanders, and anything you need to fill / debadge or what not. Just do some reasearch and you will be able to find all you need! If you do it yourself, also try to find clean place to spray the car, or build something outside like i did. I made a spray booth using construction plastic, wood posts, and a little bit of planning. Good luck man!

Thanks for all the posts and opinions. (I'm still surprised there were so many yellow color supporters out there. :))

I will most likely be keeping the green color, and possibly getting some paint to color match the bottom ground effects in the springtime. If I don't have the money, I will at least take care of the ground effects.

I'm actually going to be getting rid of the Legacy this coming December as a part of a deal I worked out. Afterwards I might either be getting a Subaru Impreza hatchback, or another Legacy - if I get a Leggy again, it's going to be a 2002-2003 Legacy GT wagon.

Thanks again for all the posts!
