Are all the EJ series the same size? What about the H6, is that a larger filter and will it fit?

Are the filters all the same? No.

Are the filter mounts all the same? I think so.

Turbo engines use a smaller filter to have a little more space between the filter and the exhaust.

Purolator filter numbers (from partsamerica.com) 05 Outback....

H6--L14459
2.5 turbo--L14612
2.5 N/A--L14460

I know that my 97 Outback uses the L14460, my old 2.2 Legacy and I think my old 1.8 Impreza also used the L14460, so I'd guess the non-turbo EJ series probably all use it. Other than size, I'm not sure of the difference between the filters listed above.

All the 1995+ Subarus now use the same oil filter EXCEPT the H6 engine.

The part numbers have all changed, and the filter is 30% smaller than the older ones.

You can easily call the dealer and get the part#.

That would be the old style one (you could buy a Bosch 3310) - but why would you want the biggest one? The new ones all flow and filter the same as the older ones for the EJ series.

personally don't think a few ounces make too much difference.

just to go off topic, what are the best oil filters i can get out there? cos i'm looking at doing another service soon, so i figure i might as well get the best filter i can...

If I still had my BD I was going to swap pans with a WRX pan like Gator GT had. It has a splash plate inside.

As for the oil filter question OEM should be good. I personally use K&N or a Puraltor pure one if I can't get a K&N fast enough.

I don't see the point in increasing your oil capacity by such a small amount...

The K&N/Wix filters are rather large.

Better to run a dry sump system than increase capacity... or run an oil reservoir system like the old Toyota's used to. ;)
