Here's what you will need to give your interior a refreshing:
At least 1 square yard of vinyl or fabric of your choice (I reccommend vinyl, it goes with the dash material well)
Stong adhesive, usually spray on adhesive or some strong all purpose glue
Phillips Head and Flathead screwdrivers
Duct Tape :-D
Skilled Hands
A nice roomy place to work

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2005/06/1-1.jpg
When you pry up the panels (you can do so with your hands, its not hard) you will hear popping. You're probably not breaking anything there's just a bunch of plastic fasteners along the edges that pop out.

I also gave myself a lot of extra room which came in handy when working on the back

I know, that's masking tape, I learned that duct tape works really well for this sort of thing...Of course I should've known this already, duct tape works well for everything

Good Luck!

Great mod post Mark!

Although, I'd opt for cloth. It'll contrast nicely with the vinyl dash, but also has more sound absorbant qualities than vinyl....making the interior sound less echo-y.

Now, get some color matched alacantra (JDM STi seat material) and now we're talkin'!...$$$

Nice work though!

Hahah, great write up and good info...I've got some leather inserts that I've been neglecting to do(precut) because it looked like a PITA, but maybe I'll give them a go.

I would suggest a spray on glue, however, (3M makes some good shit for carpeting subwoofer enclosures/other interrior bits) to prevent bubbling and patches of excess all-purpose glue....would probably save a few headaches.

Where's the shift boot writeup?? Maybe I'll do this if my other plans don't pan out.... But if those plans don't pan out, I'll be very sad... ;-)

I was too involved in the shift boot to think to take pictures, but I can do a writeup on it, it just won't have pictures of the fabrication process.

Should I? I think I will sometime. Just not right now.

Just givin ya a hard time. No need to do that. It'd be the same process, undo what they did from the factory and stitch it up.

Wiscon_Mark
07-14-2005, 11:15 AM
I measured along the seams, and cutout paper representations of what the individual 4 pieces were...then I cut out those pieces from the vinyl, got the sewing machine up and running and stiched them together from the inside giving it a nice clean look. It wasn't a long process, but a little difficult.

did a shift boot on my old car... 1994 ford probe. used black suede and blue thread. looked sweet till the swede got dirty and brown. oh well cars gone now so no big deal. maybe ill make a new one for my scooby. mmmm black leather/red stiching

what i really wanna do though is figure out how to make a shifter trim. (STi style) and paint it duplicolor medium charcoal metallic like the rest of my dash trim piieces

Nice job Mark.

Probably one of the best writeups for any mod I've seen.

This mod only really works for the Legacy, on the impreza they used plastic welds on the panels, so you can't actually get them out unless you like possibly botching stuff up.

Personally I think the vinyl looks worse than the cloth, but some alcantara would be kick-ass.

1 more for alcantara. i have a place sending me some samples, i'm doing either dark charcoal, or black, whichever matches the alcantara on my seats :D

I think Bakergtt has some of that stuff on his panels. It looks great, matches his seats perfect :D

Looks great and matches your STi seats well! :)

To complete the look, I'd ditch the red stitching on the shifter and the red accent on the pedals, as well as the wood trim.

then it'd be awesome! :D

+1

I think the red is fine, just lose the wood trim

I just got that shift knob and shift boot, that's def not going away. On the wood trim tip, I ordered the parts but they only sent me 2 out of 4 correct ones, but believe me, that is on top of my priority list to get that fixed.

the red stitching is very "sti" since the shift boot, knob, and ebrake handle all have red stitching, i think it looks fine, just fix that wood crap haha! nice job.

well we did this today on my friends legacy wagon... i did it a little different and i personally think my way is a little better but to each his own. but i do not agress with your gluing methods any other fabric and that glue is going to bleed clear threw and look like shit. so you cant do that. and i woudlnt recommend anyone put liquid glue on fabric....

take the plastic panel and take a glue stick you used back in elementry school. glue stick the panel, lay the fabric on it, smooth it out and let it stick. then work on bending it around to the back. i used gorilla glue and masking tape from there and it worked slick. heres some more pics for you guys.

oh yeah thats a dark red micro fiber suede.

total cost $15 (just for the fabric) i already had the glue stick bottle of gorilla glue, and a roll of masking tape.

i bought 1 1/2 yards of fabric to be safe. found out it was way to much, 1 yard is plenty.

I think it really depends on the glue you use. I've never had "glue bleed" with craft glue like that. Maybe one that's a bit harsher would. *shrug*

I also agree, if I had to do it over again, I'd do it a bit differently. Either way, it's a great, inexpensive mod to do, that's extremely easy.

Wow, today i noticed that the cloth is now loose in the middle. If you use spray adhesive, make sure to APPLY LIBERALLY! On Friday I'll have to crack them open again and redo them. Or tomorrow after work if I'm not exhausted.

yeah, I used 3m super 77, and that DID NOT WORK WELL.
will need to redo.

I also used super 77. The edges and the tapered part appear to be fine, but the upper half isn't sticking any more. Super 77 is supposed to be permanent or non, i think it depends on how much you use. I'll be applying a much thicker layer this time around,

So I have to redo my door cards. Thinking about using a less-porous fabric like RipStop instead of microsuede.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... Categories (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=ripstop+fabric&_sacat=See-All-Categories)

Any opinions? I have the same basic setup - blue STi seats, black shift boot and Momo steering wheel. Black window switch trim, vents etc.

I am hearing that RipStop is difficult to glue unless using contact cement...

Hmm. What about some digital camo pattern?
Too crazy?

Wiscon_Mark
08-31-2011, 06:15 PM
I think you'd get tired of Digital Camo pretty quickly.

Navi271
09-03-2011, 04:55 PM
RipStop would be interesting, but I have no idea if that will stick well. I've had trouble keeping normal fabric stuck on there! I've seen a white legacy online with camo interior door panels that looked good. I'm not sure how it would look with the blue seats tho.

I actually still have my digital camo heavy duty fabric in my car. But I chose mine because it went well with the rest of the green. I've had to redo it 2 times because it kept on unsticking! But I haven't had to reglue it since about a year ago, I think because I just used more glue.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/09/IMG_0664-1.jpg

I still really like it, and most of the complements I get from random people about my car are about the camo lol.

Huffer

If i did digital camo, i think id do the urban camo theme. Blue/grey etc.
