Ok, I have been looking for the 'under the seat' changer for about a month. Guy on e-bay has a 2002-3 WRX 6 disk changer/radio that he says will fit in the 97 legacy gt. He says its plug and play, no re-wiring?

So, for all of you that know much more about this than I do, I have only had my legacy since Dec., can this be true?? I would love to have a changer from a WRX.
thanks for any help,
jm

The 6-disc in-dash changer will slot right in.

Yup, straight swap, just transfer the brackets from your stock radio and it will plug right in.

It will plug right in, but you'll loose your clock.

If I got a WRX 6 disc, subwoofer, and harness, wouldn't the sub just plug right into the 6 disc or is it more complicated then I wish it was.

Yup, the subwoofer wiring just plugs inline in the wiring harness, you unplug the harness from the headunit, then plug it into one end of the subwoofer harness and the other end into the back of the head unit.

You may need to hook up a ground and/or 12v line, it's been a while since I had one apart.

depends on the size and power of the headunit and sub
i run a rockford hx2 comp 12in sub... that would drain my kenwood headunit ...
if ur gonna run something small like a bazooka tube or somethin it might be ok
does the sub have a built in amp too?

They're referring to the Subaru OEM subwoofer.

Ok today I put the new cd player in, it is just the unit from another 97gt. Works and fits great....however the front speaker still do not work??

They did not work with the old radio unit in, but I just thought the fader was broken. What is the chance that the new (used) fader is broken also???

The only other thing I can think of is some 'nice' person unplugged the speakers in the front doors, but that is a long shot.

I guess my question is, do the 97 gts have problems with the radio fader going out? Or should I look some where else.?
BTW, the wires all looked good and fit just fine.
Help, the cd player sounds stupid with out the front speakers:)

It's very possible that the front speakers are improperly wired.

So you think the wires could be on backwards or something like that?

That would be better than the fader not working.

I will pull the passeenger door panel tomarrow and check it out.
thanks,

so the oem sub plugs into the 6 cd changer (1din)? i have a 6 cd changer and oem sub under the seat. replaced my 2din radio unit with an aftermarket 1 din.

i was wondering if there was any way to get the sub working with the new head unit...

I think it's just more likely that they're not connected somewhere rather than crossed.

So I take the passenger door panel off and the speaker is connected :-?
Lots of dust, looks like it has never been touched.
Now is it even possible that if the driver side is not connected, then both speakers are not going to work???
Any help would be great. The fader seems to work great for the back and there are no other wires to connect to the back of the radio/cd player, I checked twice.

So I take the other door panel off, and yes everything is plugged in :-?

So does anyone know if the radio wiring harness has a speaker plug in somewhere under the glove box or dash??

If the back speakers were not working I would say the wiring harness is messed up, but it looks good, if the wires were lose, i would hear some static in the speakers in the front. But there is no sound to the front speakers at all. So the only other thing possible is the front speakers plug in somewhere else other than at the speaker and the radio. This is where they have to be unplugged :-?
Anyone know where this location might be, or have the same problem in the past??
thanks for any help, have to get my car back together for work on Monday.

I just installed my 02 6 disc and I love it! It was as you all have said, a true plug and play. I just swapped over the brackets from the old stereo.

I noticed that the sound quality seemed to improve. Maybe it was because I took out the shit for the Kenwood trunk mounted changer.

Overall a great mod. I'll try the OE woofer next.

The front speakers do have a connect to the main harness in the door. it clips in there. Trace the wires up from the speaker, they should be green, white or grey/white.

Ok, went out and checked the wires again in the door. Found the plug in, it is right below the speaker. looks like it is plugged in, even checked it.
I checked the wiring on the floor on the right hand side of the passenger foot well. Had to take the trim pieces off and carpet back. Everything looks good. Guess I will have to trace from behind the cd player, Just does not seem right that the fader could have been bad in both radio units???
Will keep taking things apart, should see my car, what a mess, inside.
The only good thing so far is I am cleaning everything before I put it back, so the car will look better when I am done.
Thanks for the help so far, might have to take this in to a shop to get it working.

i just put a 2006sti's six disc into my 98 leagcy and it looks sick in my opion better than a fterm, arket unit the 6disc blends with the dash and hook up is easy like 5min tops

for the price of a wrx or sti changer (usually around $150 used), its really not worth it. i just got a pioneer 1900mp installed in my 97gt and the sound difference is huge. even the newer oem subaru cd players dont perform that well. the pioneer was $80, a harness was $6, and it took me 2 hrs to splice and install. best part about it... it has an AUX jack, which is all i use now.
oh.. and you dont lose your clock like with a wrx or sti unit.

i like what you said about the clock , but i only paid $30 for my sti 6disc ,
i have seen wrx cd players for $50
the thing most appealing to me was the stock look that the sti 6disc gave to the dash
and it only took 5mins to install

+1 Got mine for 58 shipped off e-bay. The only difference is that mine is silver instead of black, so it clashes a bit with the rest of the trim.

Thanks, in the pic, the flash washes out the black more than it actually is. I will say that having an in dash changer is the way to go.

Mental note: Remove passenger side seat and pull old changer and wiring
