Congratz man! You know what i find funny though.. hondas hit well over 300k all the time, it almost makes me sad that were celebrating hitting 200k.. thats like being like.. 'wooooooo i made it to the age of 20!'. Too bad these cars dont have a bit of a longer life span to them without serious work. Keep up the good work man, hope your car lasts till 300k! :twisted:

The older Legacys that have had a chance to hit 300k usually have.

Key words.. that have had a chance. I see tons of junked subarus around here still running. Sure, they run.. but not very well. Yes.. some of the older legacies are still running..probably because they were taken care of to the dime, always taken to the dealership, and every part replaced on them. There are still honda's running around with 300k+ that have not had much done to them.. i doubt subaru could say the same.

There might be a few, but you'd want to check over on LCO - they've got most of the 1st gen Legacys.

It's much more likely that a Honda would have over 300k of healthy miles for one reason: gas mileage. More people who travel long miles every day are likely to choose a civic or the like and put long (easy) highway miles that would add up to 300k a lot quicker.

Also considering that Honda sells a lot more cars...

My point: you're not making a fair comparison and you're not giving subaru very much credit. They may not be right at the same spot as Honda, but they're not as far back as you claim.

True.. when i see a 300k mile subaru though.. i will give them credit.. I suppose one is better than none. When i hung out over at honda-tech i would see tons and tons and tons of cars that had made it past 300k.. then someone would swap a new engine into them and they would keep going. All the subaru's i have seen that are nearing 200k are completely beat, rusting, and need about a billion dollars in parts in order to get them up and running. While that is okay if you have the money.. i just dont think its too friendly on the average consumer.

Besides - ask Huffer how many problems he has had with his 200k mile subaru? There are many over 200k that are still revving to redline and having a blast.

Saying that all Subarus over 200k are rust buckets (it's kinda hard not to be in the salt belt though) that need 10 grand in repairs to be "like new" again is a pretty ignorant thing to say.

And like Mark said, there are more Hondas on the road than Subaru. Subaru is a small company in it's indurstry.

Nothing beyond the usual parts that rust out.
I can take it to redline, but I don't, simply because I don't want to end it's life prematurely. I have a small coolant leak from my top radiator hose, and that's about it.

Original engine, original auto transmission. :)

Mark hit the nail on the head here. Honda's have always rusted terribly in my experience, not at all better than a Subaru would hold up. I think it makes sense that people usually buy a Subaru if they live somewhere where winters are harsh or they need a "winter beater" because of its AWD. Original Honda buyers look for things like great fuel economy and reliability. Honda's can be very reliable, but they still need service. I have seen more than a few with blown motors and transmissions well before 200k, but I can also say the same about some Subaru's.


Just for comparison my prior 89 Taurus gl had ~287k miles on it before the car next to it blew up taking its life. My prior 89 Taurus SHO had 202k before I sold it. My current car turned over 214k last week.

My Accord has 176k on it, according to all the receipts and the previous owner it only went through tons of cheap tires, new oil pan and gasket and tune ups. The body is shit though, looks like the rear quarters where rusted.

Lady that had my 95 before me (original owner) took it to the garage that a family friend owns, and she did every PM schedule right to the T. I actually bought the car through him, and he said the car never had a problem. I'm at 206k now, and it needs main seals and gaskets, but I still drive the car everyday usually 70+ miles, and it burns no oil.

always gotta look out for the rear quarters on honda.. its the honda cancer spot. :lol:
