Did I get the wrong Kartboy shift lever?

Just spent 2 hours trying to get the damn thing on. I can't get the ball to go inside the white cup for the life of me. I wailed on it as hard as I could with a hammer but it wouldn't budge. I put the stocker back on so I can get to work tomorrow.

The number on the shifter is KB009829. I reviewed my order and I did order the correct one, so maybe they shipped the wrong one? Hard to tell since all the part numbers on the site don't match the one on the lever. If anyone has one that's not installed and could compare the number that would be great.

I'm going to send kartboy an email about it but I thought I might get a quicker response here.

IIRC the plastic ball end is all the same for across the subaru. Just need a good wack; you can try screwing your knob on the shifter and wack into place with your hand, some have had good luck with that.

i consider my self pretty strong and installing that thing was a freaking sonuvabitch. i took a brick to it and slammed it with no reserve....well, maybe a little. but still, it takes a lot to get it in there.

I think I recall reading somewhere that

1) Make sure the ball on the shifter is lubed well before trying to seat it.

2) Heating the plastic socket up some (like with a hair dryer) helps, especially in the cold weather.


When I did mine, it was a PITA, I put the old shift knob on the lever and gave it a good whack with a small sledge......a dead-blow would probably be better, but I don't have one of those.

Thanks, I'll try heating it up. I had tons of lithium grease on it, and I even decided to sacrifice the stock shift knob. I put it on and beat the hell out of it with a hammer, wouldn't budge. I'll go at it again this weekend.

you need to smite it with something and heavy with a lot of mass. Dumbells, 4x4's, etc. It will go in.

I just put mine in last week...... pounded and pounded with a 20 oz framing hammer and a block of oak..... split the first block and got another,...... kept pounding.... thought it was never going in, then, all of a sudden..........POP... in it went.
Just keep at it..... I was wondering, between curses, if the grease was actually hindering the placement, as it allows a seal to be created, and you are fighting an air pocket/pressure situation. Anyone ever try this install by cleaning out all the grease first then lubing after install?????
