I found this on an Accord forum. Check it out and see what you guys think. If you like it I will sticky it. I plan on trying the coolant bypass on my Accord.

one doesn't have anything for us DOHC guys. (sidenote, DOHC people: if you've not actually seen the chamber of your head, you'd be very impressed, there's very little area not accounted for by valves, it looks great :grin: )

three: that's pretty hacked and all it would cause is a rich condition. same as the "modules" from ebay.

five: "a cooler engine always produces more power." are they dense? cooler air, thereby denser (containing more oxygen to burn and nitrogen to expand) is the important part. the engine is designed to operate at a specific temperature, especially engines with aluminum and iron components, they are all machined to fit best when at temp. with computer controlled engines, they will always either adjust for the change thereby negating your change, or stay exactly on tune, not accounting for whatever change may have occurred. we're not talking about carb'ed engines.

I'm going to try Synthetic oil and the TB coolant bypass. Though, with my intake, I'm not sure if it's really going to be worth it. :p

I disagree...I have this mod done. In the hot of summer do you really want even HOTTER fluid flowing all around your incoming air HEATING it up?

your engine was NOT designed to run at any given temp.... Subaru's are seen ALL over the world...at all different climates and temperatures. Have you ever started your car up on a nice COLD day and sort of felt like it was faster? well yea... cold air is more dense....hence why they make cold air intakes... This mod is just another extension of getting COLD air into your engine :)

The coolant lines running to your tb are there to prevent the tb from iceing up in the cold months. You do not want to reroute them this time of year.

some people T them off with a valve.... I will probably do this on my next car. though I have never had a problem....

first, there is so much heatsoak into the intake manifold, and probably up to the TB anyway that it wouldnt matter after the car is warmed up. second, heat transfer doesnt act THAT fast. third, of course its designed to run at a given temp, its called the operational temperature, every car no mater what the climate, the motor still gets up to the same temperature, provided we arnt jumping into over heating ranges. as solid as metals may seem they do move, and the car is ment to work so that at operational temp, all the parts are still in tolerance.

I did the TB bypass months ago. No detectable difference in anything. That said, the car runs fine in -10* weather and doesn't ice up the TB. Honestly, how can the line prevent ice up when the coolant is cold for the first 5-10 minutes of cold driving anyway? After that, underhood temperatures should be fine for regulating the heat of the TB.

It's a case of people that never done it just "heard" things. I'm sure it's not a HUGE difference, it's most likely minimum gains. Shit I'll take whatever I can.

I know I'm new at this and may be totally wrong but, doesn't the throttle body just basically control the air into the intake? whats there to freeze up, the injectors shoot the fuel into the cylinders. These are fuel injected engines not carburated, carbs would freeze up cuz of the fuel in them.

well..... the fuel wouldn't freeze, trust me. the freezing temperature of gasoline, if i remember from chem class, is somewhere near -200F

the only "ice" that would form in the intake manifold or TB, would be from the moisture in the air that is brought through the intake

What will freeze is the throttle plate to the throttle body. Causing it to not open. I am not saying everyone will have a problem with this, but that is why there is coolant running through the tb.

Moisture, good point I didn't think of that. I can see that happening. But how much moisture is in the air around freezing?

next to none. it wouldn't condense from the air onto anything that was colder than the surounding air, thus the surface would need to be warmer than the air in order for condensation to form. THEN the TB would have to cool down again in order for the condensation to freeze. but if the TB is heating up, then you don't need to worry about it icing up at all.

i don't see how this is an issue


ONLY possible way i see this happening is if you run it for a minute or two to like move it out of the way on the driveway, and then let it sit for an hour of two. PLUS the air would have to be completely saturated with moisture, and your intake filter has just got to suck balls not to atleast absorb SOME of that moisture

well, typically colder air has less moisture in it because it than warm air, mainly because warm air has a higher saturation point. so my guess? if there is any moisture in air cold enough to get your TB to freezing temperature, you've got more problems than your TB freezing

I did the TB coolant bypass today, it was a bit of a bitch to do. >_< I had to exchange the brass fitting a few times, too... Oh, and I picked up a freaking hex wrench in my dad's truck while driving into town the last time, and had to go get it fixed. o.O

My car definatly feels better, smoother, with the bypass. Worth it for me. I think that everything was heating up to the point where my MAF was heating up, and it was throwing off readings, now it seems to work better.
