I thought I'd take the Legacy in at 99721KMS to just have it checked up before it rolls over and is out of warranty. To my surprise and releif, it now has an appointment for Monday next to have the engine yanked out, and have the heads removed, and pressure tested, new head gaskets and a new DOJ boot. All in all the dealer said is about 3 days work worth about $3500 CAD.

Thank goodness I took it in!

As a side note, is the tranny in Subie's like a V6/V8 in that if they remove the engine, are they left looking at the open end of the automatic transmission, and the torque converter is right there? If that's the case, this may be a prime opportunity for me to change that thing at minimal installation cost.

I had the same thing done to mine at 98000km. I took it in after someone had commented it sounded like a diesel. Ended up getting 2 new pistons and the left head replaced, figured i get them to change the plugs since they had it apart. Unfortunalty it kinda starting to sound the same way again, 10800km, so I might have to get it looked at. Oh yeah, ask about your timing belt tensioner as well, i guess they are prone to seizing up, they replaced mine.

My mechanic bought an 02 BH LTD after i bought my BE, I told him about the motor problem and he took his to the suby dealer and they did the same for him. I'd recommend doing it before it's too late.
