Advice for newb looking to buy a subaru...

Hey all, I've been searching for a new, reliable car and due to riding in Mark's subaru and the amazing control and reliability in winter I definitely have been looking for a subaru of my own and I have finally come across one that, to me, seems like a great deal. It's a listing in Auto Trader magazine and before I call I'd like some opinions: it's a 2000 subaru legacy(sedan) awd, auto, new tires, new batt, remote entry & start, ac, all power, 42,500 mi, (green/gray, yea yea) garaged during winter months since 2002. and...9,000 or best offer. Basically I'm wondering if this is "too good to be true" and if not, what kinds of things I should inquire about if i contact the individual. Thanks much everyone!

Yep, the one and only, and the subaru is a popular subject for conversation let me tell you...he was pretty excited to take it out yesterday. But concerning the ad, i haven't gotten any word back from him yet which is why I posted, cause he'd get a kick out of it and despite all he's told me, I'm still not very car savvy.

As far as the car, 9k seems somewhat low for price, but they may just want to move the car. I'd do a carfax and try to see if it's been in any accidents. Depending on how Wisconsin does things, it may say rebuilt, recontructed, or salvage on the title and registration if it has been and the state knows about it. If the car is in fact clean, good running, and everything is in check, I'd make an offer.

^ +1 .. id definitely work on the 'or best offer'. Offer him $7500.. that will allow him space to move up if you are shooting for $8k.

Also, check out carfax for sure, and do a little research on the seller if you can, as well as maybe try to get some information out of subaru if you can obtain the VIN #. While im not sure if they will give it to you, just use a little bit of reverse engineering / human manipulation! I did it.. and got good results! :grin:

You can also find things to convince the seller to lower the car price.. any rust / body damage. Condition of struts / tires. Interior condition / cleanliness. Look for things that 'need to be fixed' then tell him, and make an offer. I would shoot for a lower offer then what he is asking, in order to give him headroom to 'increase the price.' Also, if you mention CASH, he is more likely to accept the offer.

Yep, I've done it a bunch of times. I just email using the links off mysubaru.com

John Mergen is usually the guy that replies. He's real nice about stuff, even sent me (via mail) remote reprogramming instructions.

Yup.. they wont give out any information about the car registered under a VIN # here as well, unless you can PROVE you have the registration to the vehicle.. which is not possible until you buy the car and bring it into the shop. I had to manipulate them into telling me information.. hence the tip. :wink:

The good thing is, she's got a buyer for her car (her mom wants the car to go to her little brother). I wouldn't buy a used car without an inspection and a test drive anyways.

I bought a car without inspection, or test drive.. flew out to chicago to pick it up.. and it works great. I just did a lot of research about the car / buyer before making any plans to even check it out. If buying long distance.. just ask tons of questions. If they are lying, you will catch them up in their lies eventually.. and when you see it, if its crap.. well, you can always go home. Luckily, the car i bought was in great mechanical, and bodily condition.. so i was happy! :grin:

How about a 95 or so Camry.

Parts are cheap. You can go to any wrecking yard and pull parts.

The 4 banger version is pretty cheap on the gas too.

My in-laws, were in a bit of a financial bind. I bought them a 96 camry for 2k. Sucker runs great. I got a deal on it because of the amateur body repair, but the interior and the guts were in great condition when I had it checked out.

If you really wanted that AWD, some of the older camry's, tercels also came in AWD. Besides the rust issues, I loved my All-trac Camry. :grin:

There appears to be an abundance of the All-trac's on the East coast too. When I couldn't find one around here, I bought my All-trac from New York.

helllllllll no on the accord..those things SUCK! You'd be better off getting a civic, or the camry...or hell, even a hyundai or nissan. Most of toyotas cars are pretty sweet.. also, civic hatch, or sedan, nissan has some good cars too, and you can find them for cheap.. but yea, i hate the accords, i think they are junk. Especially any between 94-97.. JUNK! CRX = awesome car. Too bad its super hard to find any in decent condition, or not all riced out.

Yea, its pretty much impossible to find a decent clean looking one anywhere. Thats why when someone has a really nice one, with NOTHING wrong with it.. sells for like $9k! I wish i would have kept mine.. it was super nice.. back when it wasnt such a big deal to have a nice one, i sold it for only like $3500.. damn, stupid move! haha. Only place to get nice ones for decent prices is cali.. and that would be quite the drive back, unless you wanted to pay the $1200 for shipping! Maybe when i get more $ i will get one and completely fix it up..those cars rock. Plus.. get they get like 35mpg+ easy.

Yea, i know thats insane.. but thats what a perfect body stock crx gets on ebay.. its fucking CRAZY. You can however get some decent crx's with mods and stuff for like $5-6k.. but still, thats a lot for a car they stopped making in 91. When i say 9k.. thats for a car with EVERYTHING in perfect condition, and like 30k stock. Basically a collectors car. Hell, if i was rich, id buy one just to keep!

I'd have to say go with toyota, there are many many to choose from used and they are pretty good vehicles.

I definitely agree with you here, i haven't had a whole lot of luck on the subaru search (and for the record I am by no means "jumping into things" or the type to just buy the 1st thing that looks good-there are a lot of things i have to consider, location, being a major issue. It's awesome that y'all can travel extreme distances for your car, but a mother, and co-signer for a loan that isn't digging that) anyways, back to the point, i've found a lot more good toyotas near me that I may check out.

KC doesn't really have the time to work her way up to paying cash for the whole thing, this is kind of her investment for college, consider it a replacement for living in the dorms (she's thinking of commuting, and this is what spurred her new car search) which would drive her into debt much faster than a car. She goes into college this fall.

It's not like she can't make a hefty downpayment (with money saved up as well as the money she'll get for her car) and minimize the debt, but having a good car and living at home is a better debt option than taking out more than one loan just to pay for college + dorms. The dorms here are as expensive (if not a little more) than the tuition, it's ridiculous. Stafford Loans have their limits, and even with the expanded loans next year, they won't pay for everything - she's likely have to take out an additional loan to pay for living, one that may or may not need to be payed immediately.

When you're going into college, unless mommy and daddy are paying for everything, there is going to be debt. There's really no way around it.

Nope, but you have the option to drop full coverage. But if you have a newer car it's kind of a bad idea. Look at what happened to me, I was assed out.

Well, you could get lucky and inherit mom & dad's small business, or just their money, but other than that, you're really not going to make a living wage with just a high school diploma unless you go into a factory job, which is not a very secure position these days.

I wish i had anything to inherit.. the only thing i'll ever inherit will be bills. :lol: And thats not true.. most people who eventually get rich, its because they spent their time researching and executing a business plan, rather than wasting 4 yeats at college getting a degree. You see.. no one cares that you have a degree once you have one..so basically you are back at square one with no fry-cook experience to even help you. SURE you may get a decent job.. but you usually need to know someone to get you in, or have a lot of experience to show what you are doing... its really a catch 22 if you ask me. While college was cool and everything, i sometimes think my degree is a $50,000 piece of toilet paper. I could have been making money in so many other ways then just spending it on an 'edumacation' that i didnt even need. Look at most of the worlds richest people.. they didnt even finish going to college. I think by not going to college it really allows you more time to figure out WHAT you enjoy, and WHAT you are good at.. rather than just being chewed up in the system and spit out back at square one. A college degree is only useful in some situations to get in the door. So if you like serving coffee while having 50k + in loans.. by all means, go for it. I'm going to paying this off for the rest of my life.. so, in the end, i give college a negative review. Maybe some day this piece of paper will mean something to someone.

I think you'll find that a VAST majority of the rich and sucessful you referred to have at least a 2 year business degree, if not a lot more.

I look at business degrees like 'liberal arts' degrees. Most people just choose that, because they DONT know what to do. While some people do have business degrees and are successful, i think that there are a lot more people without degrees at all who are very successful as well. Hell, i know i could have taken the 50k i spent on school, and probably made a lot more money opening a business then where im at now.. which is broke. :lol:

if i had finished my degree before going out and working in my preferred field id have a 60k/yr kick ass job right now- i was offered the position, and it was then rescinded when they found i didnt have a degree... I'm back in school

More like you need experience to be in the running. Or at least in most jobs.. they will hire someone with experience, over someone who has a degree and no experience. It really depends what you are doing i suppose.

pretty much-and while family/friends helped me get the job i have now..my "connection"/people skills really aren't going to get me a pharmacist job.

Now don't get me wrong, i have seen a handful of people who make good money w/o a degree, simply by moving up in their field, but as previously mentioned a lot of that is a family/friend or a factory/hard labor job where you can move up w/ experience, and while i'd be more than willing to take a factory job, we're not all able to do that. I'm not all that hyped up about goin' to college, but i think it'll have more benefits than consequences

Ahh, a classic choice, the pill pusher. There is money in this field after all.. since america is pretty much a country full of pharm companies constantly pushing drugs on people that dont need them, and an endless list of users who will be hooked to them for life because they think they do. Mis-diagnosis is this fields best friend.. so as long as doctors keep getting a cut from the pharm companies.. you will be in business. At least you will have money... probably more then i will ever make. I should have chose a field like this.. selling drugs would NOT be a problem in this day and age at all!

I worked a part time job from the time I was 15, each week, and full time during the summers. I still traveled during summer break (roadies are fun!) and went to college without a loan. I lived at home and worked part time also.

Sure, it's tough, but it's way better than graduating and having to find a good job in 6 months to pay back a bunch of loans.

People just have to be patient.

as hot as the car is, I just can't drive to Ohio for a car, the cost of getting there and back isn't worth it, sorry guys. appreciate the efforts though...it really is a nice looking car.

And as for the "pill pusher"- I want to be a pharmacist for the research and the connections to immunology. I do think it's ridiculus how people abuse Rx drugs and cause everyone to become immune and diseases mutate, causing more problems. I want to do the research, and have the extensive knowledge base behind the prescriptions and how what fights what in the body and teach people how to use them appropriately. Eventually I'd love to become a professor or become a lab rat, maybe find a cure, or at least a better regiment to cure my brother's disease JRA. So yea, I have my reasons for needing college-expenses or not.
