WRX ehaust on BE? [Archive] - Subaru Legacy International

I can get an axleback off of an '04 for dirt cheap - $60. Is there going to be a ton of trouble getting this to fit my car, or is it simply a matter of welding on my axleback pipe and modifying the hangers?

My OEM muffler has a slight rattle on the inside and the WRX muffler has a twin tip on it which should make it look a bit better...

Basically is it something that a descent exhaust shop can do with just a bit of labour?

You can really MAKE anything fit, it just depends on HOW well it fits. I think Subaru cans are pretty much interchangeable, with a few mods to hangers and connections.

The 05 STi axle back I got (for $70) was very easy to put on. Took about 1 hour and fits GREAT. Did have to modify hangers, but thats not hard.

I know anything can be made to work. It was a question of the degree of difficulty. Seems not so bad, hopefully not more than an hour labour at an exhaust shop.

They'll need to cut the pipe, reweld the hangers and bent up pipe to connect it to the rest of your factory exhaust.

It'll probably cost as much as if you installed any other aftermarket muffler in there...

the cheapest i found in toronto subaru club is $200cdn obo + whatever the installation will cost me.............

Lol, Bingo. That's why I've resulted to the WRX one... Haven't done this yet, still considering it.

so did you figure out how much labour would it be? I want to keep my stock axleback so I can put it back to stock when I get a new car..so I am wondering will it be a lot of work to put on the sti one..

i was going to do this but the quote i got was 2 hours labor @ 85 bucks per hour. no thanks.

anyway, there's more to it than just welding and bending, we measured and the mid pipe is too short on the wrx and needs a 6-8 inch extension in order to make it fit, then the exhaust hangers need to be not only extended but also moved about 3 inches, otherwise it rubs weird

I talked to a shop today which I have been going to for years (but have seen significantly less of since getting the Subie)

They do a lot of exhaust work and somewhat specialize in it. I explained what I thought would need to be done based on the info provided in this thread.

First off they said to be completely accurate they need me to bring it in and lift the car up. But based on what I was saying she figured about an hours labour plus or minus a bit. Probably also need a new hanger and thats only a few bucks.

She told me they can make it work one way or another, and that they would put Dennis on this job because he's the perfectionist when it comes to exhaust work. I've seen some of his work, that's reassuring.

Anywhoo it looks like I'm going to go ahead with it. Just need to find time and go pickup the muffler.

Labor varies a lot by where you go, where you live, the shop's experience, etc.

I paid more for my exhaust than some of the others that have done this I think;mainly because I went full cat-back, and the shop I went to was a specialized performance shop that did a lot of subbie work. On top of that they supplied the STi muffler, so I think I paid more for that than I would have if I had bought it off one of the forums.

Remember, if you have a dual tip WRX muffler your car will chirp at low RPMs. It's a bird muffler. That's why I chopped mine off.

On my BK, the axleback had to have all three hangers cut and moved and the tips extended. Beyond that, to fit to your midpipe the flange would need rotating. For me this took place further along on the midpipe which I also sourced from a WRX.

At this point I am going to ask why you do not just buy a SPT axel back and bolt it right on - they make them specifically for the BE/BH and probably sounds better than the stock WRX can. It would save you a huge hassle. Just a suggestion :wink: .

It is obviouly more than buying a used Rex can, but with stainless steel and a direct bolt on you can't go wrong. Plus this would last ahelluvalot longer than a used stock Rex axel back. You may buy a used WRX axel back and pay money to have it modified, only to have it rot out on you in a year or two.

$229US + shipping, customs, conversion is a lot more than $140 CAN on the car for the WRX. If it fails on me in a couple of years I will have some more $ to play with. By then I may not even be worried about modifying the car at all anymore (Ya right :lol: )

I tried to contact the guy I was going to get it from but he hasn't replied to me in a while.

Get an 04+ wrx muffler. They're the same as the STi muffler.

This one is off of an 04. It came off of the car 1 month after purchase and is the dual tip style.

Did you get a quote for labour yet?

Dual tip style? I believe that's the older style wrx muffler instead of the new one that is same as sti muffler

I thought I said it but maybe not. I was quoted an hour labour give or take based on what I told them.

I thought the dual tip was the older kind. But he insists its a dual tip OEM off of an '04. Still waiting to hear back from him.

Here it is. Very happy with the work done. After a coupon I got off their website I was out the door $104 for the install. Charged for 1 hr labour, custom pipe and a gasket.

He didn't touch the oem piping so I can take this off and throw on the old one if/when I get rid of the car, or sell it or whatever. You know how there was something loose inside? Turned the thing on end when it was off teh car and a couple small piece of gravel fell out. :shock:

I don't know wtf happened there.
