View Full Version : Mazda 323 GTX??

My other car is an '88 Mazda 323 GTX (AWD turbo). I'm sorta hooked on the AWD thing ... Yes it's ugly. I know.

It's nothing special. Just my first car. It's boosting at 16 psi. I wouldn't be surprised if no one's ever heard of it. I'm used to it. I used to think 323's were just Mazda's cheap, economy model. It's just a lot of fun to drive. It's got a few upgrades:

-RC 440 injectors
-Greddy Profec B
-Road Race Engineering chipped ecu
-TCC Work type 1 bov
-Saab front mount intercooler
-VJ-14 turbo upgraded to VJ-16 specs
-JAZ breather tank
-HKS 2.5” exhaust
-New Clevite rod bearings
-New Mazda piston rings
-New Mazda headgasket
-Newly rebuilt transmission

-Greddy turbo timer
-G-Tech air fuel gauge

-Stainless Steel brake lines
-Galant VR-4 front brake upgrade
-Cross drilled and slotted rotors front and back
-KYB shocks
-Aftermarket springs
-Aftermarket swaybars
-Cusco front strut tower bar

-14” Borbet wheels with Blizzaks
-Momo steering wheel
-Momo shift knob
-Jspec bumpers
-A/C removed
-Power steering removed

And I've got some new coilovers waiting to go on next.

I've heard of it.

Mazda's were my first love. 323's make good rally cars.

03-13-2007, 11:59 PM
Hah! I have yet to rally it cause the suspension is shot, but hopefully that'll change soon.

*wide eyed*

Wowwwwww, I've never seen one of those before.

Very cool

03-14-2007, 12:36 AM
OMG! I freakin' love GTXs!!! Such an awesome platform. AWD + Turbo way before it was cool in the states. Got any vids of it?

03-14-2007, 12:40 AM
Those things are cool.

03-14-2007, 12:42 AM
Thanks Thanks. I personally don't have any videos, but there's a select few on youtube and the likes.

03-14-2007, 12:43 AM
Lol I've only seen one modified one before, and I was like wtf is that junker? Then he pulled on me on the highway in my GC  I then talked to the guy and got the whole scoop, cool little cars.

Sure they're ugly, but really, who cares if it's your "fun" car.

03-14-2007, 12:50 AM
Haha I hear a lot of those stories from the GTX drivers about how everyone laughs at them and then they get beat. Honestly, the only thing I've raced so far on the streets is a 1.8t Golf that I beat.

03-14-2007, 01:02 AM
These things are uber popular downunder.

My best friend's brother has one in BRIGHT RED - he probably sunk about $15k into it and it goes like STINK now... he'll outdo most 300hp cars over a short distance, and they can be thrown around like crazy.

They do crumple into tiny balls if they hit a wall though...

03-14-2007, 01:10 AM
It's too bad the transmission can't hold ANY kind of power. That's probably it's one major downfall, besides the looks  . Seriously, the stock transmission can't handle much more than probably 250hp. Other AWD 323 models not sold in america (like the 90-94 GTX/GTR) are said to handle closer to 350hp, but still, that's not much ... :-(

03-14-2007, 01:20 AM
Lol so you went from awd with weak transmissions to..... awd with weak transmissions

Looks like a fun car. Love the meter taped to the steering column.

Thats sweet man! And cool guage cluster for the 88 year! Were the GTX's the only ones they made in AWD? My brother use to have a 91 323.. we use to beat the crap out of it.. those are cool cars though!

03-14-2007, 12:29 PM
only certain 88 and 89 hatches were GTXs. Only ~1200 were imported into the US. Other countries got AWD versions until 94.

Thanks for the compliments on this car too

03-14-2007, 06:18 PM
OMFG i love that gauge cluster, it looks so cool.

OMFG i love that gauge cluster, it looks so cool.

Kinda S2000ish, but 15 years older.

03-14-2007, 08:55 PM
Haha true.

03-17-2007, 11:46 AM
Damn if I had known how rare they are, I would have bought one that I was looking at last year when I bought a beater. 80k, mint condtion and 1400 bucks! Damn I should have bought it.

03-17-2007, 03:12 PM
Wooow! Where was it for sale? I got mine for $2500 .... but mine's pretty modified.

03-18-2007, 02:30 AM
Always like the GTX. There was never one around when I was looking to pick one up. I ended up with a 4dr GT and even that had a lot of balls. I liked the tray under the front passenger seat.

03-18-2007, 08:20 PM
Mine doesn't have that, but some of the 323 people are selling them. maybe I'll pick some up.

Whoops .... double posted!

Heh, I can't help but giggle a bit at 80's style gauges. Awesome car though!

04-01-2007, 04:36 PM
lol true. Everyone seems to like those gauges!

04-01-2007, 04:50 PM
I just notice the front bumper--the grille is the entire front of the car...it looks hungry...

04-01-2007, 05:02 PM
haha I never thought of it like that. The stock US GTX bumper made the car look uglier than normal.

Here's one with a stock bumper:

Ugly? No way dude. Keep on rockin the hatch.

AWD Mazda FTW!

04-27-2007, 04:32 PM
Looks awesome! I love GTX's.

But, for the record, they're not AWD. They're mechanical 4WD. A bit more "agricultural" if you will, but it certainly worked for them back when it was important. ;)

04-29-2007, 03:54 PM
I don't really know the difference, but thanks for the compliments!

04-30-2007, 12:24 PM
Simply put, they're more GMC 4x4 than STi AWD ;)

They're still awesome little cars.

05-01-2007, 11:59 PM
Mine's been pissing me off lately. I got new battery, alternator, accessory belt and the starter was replaced a couple of months ago. When I go to start it up, I get nothing, no crank no start until I try like 5 times, then it'll crank over.

Also, the car will shut off at random times when getting off the throttle.

Pain in my ASS!
