hey guys i might be buying a BD legacy gt from a friend and was wondering aobut what some common problems are, it is a 1997 5spd 4dr with the 2.5l dohc. just wanna know the common problems and i was wondering if these cars have egr issuses, his has some bad mileage for gas, and wont pass emmisions because of egr. i know it might just be a common egr problem but i figured i would ask since i am new to the legacies.

Not really common, but also not that big a deal. The most serious common problem is the headgaskets going, ask him if those have been done already. If not, expect to have to do them at some point.

Oh, and I used to live in Fairfax, and knew tons of people in springfield. We're getting a lot of members from the DC metro area on here lately!

well i mean we rebuilt the engine 2 years ago together with all brand new headgaskets piston rings, machined heads and everything. and it has about 70k on it now so i dont think it should be such a big deal. and well i just sold my 2.5rs cause i couldnt afford it anymore and he offered to sell me the legacy cheap since i've been doing work on it for a while. and i like the subaru crowd. so i guess let me know if you guys ever have local meets

If it won't pass emissions then it probably needs a new cat, or PCV valve, or something like that.

It's a subaru, and nearly identical to your RS, so that gives you all the info you need, really! :)

no i know the problem is the EGR... i scanned it. i was just wondering like if the egr is something to lookinto with buying these cars. and i honestly didnt have my RS for that long to know everything about it. plus this car has the dohc engine oppsed to my sohc with the subtl differences

Yes, it is fairly common to have problems with the EGR system, there are a few things you can check though.

First up, pull off the EGR system and make sure none of it is full of carbon buildup, if it is you've found your problem.

If that's not the problem it may be the actuator diaphragm, get yourself another one from a junkyard and see if that makes a difference.
