So a cat back exhaust will add maybe 5-10 hp on a good day  .
How do I get close to 197hp???? without putting a wrx engine in
thanks,
jm

why 197hp. That's a pretty specific number, what, does one of your friends have 196 or something? haha

you want 197 wheel hp, or crank hp? Full exhaust, intake, lightweight pulleys, and engine management might get you to that crank hp. Any more money in that motor, and you might as well swap it, prices for wrx motors are coming down.
And are you going to be racing a Civic SI? lol. 197hp is pretty specific.

 Yeh, the bmw m3 1989 has 197. I think it will take too much $$ to get my car to that point, but I am going to change out the springs/struts this next week. Most likely the best mod I can do for the money.
I was looking on e-bay for the intake, which one do most of you use, recommend???

e30 m3's were never famous for their incredible power output; the same year 325is was faster with the same differential. For your comparison though, it would take a lot more than 197hp to make your car as fast as an e30 m3 on the road since the bmw is lighter and has less drivetrain loss.
The handling, what the bmw is famous for, can be close to matched in a legacy, although the character of the car will always be very different.
i reccomend leaving the intake alone since there arent any real gains there. Cutting the snorkus in the fender will get you most of that potential.

The generic ebay intake works just as well as any other. Check the DIY section, there's a good writeup there.
I heart e30 M3's

To get to 197, you'd want to do intake, cams, and exhaust. Then you'd be up around 197 at the crank. To get 197 at the wheels, it's going to require a lot more. ;)

Yeh, the m3 is a different car, not that I really think my car would be equal to the m3, I am going to do a few mods over the next 6 months and see what happens. I did do a cat back borla (sp) exhaust, sounds nice, power maybe some???
What do you guys think of the lightened pulley? any gains, or just quicker rpm???
Next week the suspension goes on, should be fun to see what the car will do up the I-5 up to Mt. Shasta

You should go up to Crater Lake. It's more fun. Then agian, the last time I drove up there there was 8 inchs of snow on the road.

197hp??? You couldn't do a WRX swap and get that to the wheels. I was at 117hp and 119 tq at the wheels with my 97 gt. The only thing left would have been, header, highflow cat and A/F manager and tune. I may have got what 10-15 hp out of that? You need to alot more than just "bolt ons".

matt monson hit 200 with cams, exh and tune, iirc.
tune is huge- might as well have a stock engine if its not tuned.

You talking about 200 to the crank. Although the number may look nice but it's not as impressive as whp.

Well when you have the car dynoed to figure out the whp they should know. If not at least a close estimation

Both Matt Monson and Pat Olson have more power than a WRX coming from their N/A EJ25...200 at the wheels sounds about right.

If I remember correctly I seen dyno numbers of stock WRX were around 167 whp.

Yeah. Depends on the dyno. The range is around 160-180whp.

20whp is a big gap. A Dynapack will give you higher numbers vs a mustang dyno. Numbers are pretty on paper, I rather have numbers from a roller dyno and those numbers came from one.
