View Full Version : all 4 speakers blown

so.. specs: 96 legacy LS no tweeter kit, came with a tape deck/AM/FM now has a CD head unit (that's nothing special, it's been installed for about 3 years with no problems)

my rear speakers blew out. all sorts of cracking and snapping with any base that a song or a DJ's voice may have, so i've been running everything through the front 2 speakers.. and "what's his name's" Law has taken affect and the reaction of pushing everything through the front 2 speakers is having an equal and opposite reaction and now the fron 2 are starting to go.

now, i don't want anything special, basically just replacement speakers. a set of 4 would be nice, the 2 in the rear and the 2 in the front.

does anyone know what i should be looking for? size? brand? is there a compatability issue i need to worry about, or are speakers all the same when it comes to wiring (aside from humongus ones that need an amplifier)?

any help would be appriciated.

(oh, and sorry for not being around at all. been working full time while trying to find another better job)

I just posted a thread like this a bit ago.. mine turned out to be a blown sub. I think yours might have the same size as mine.. 6.5" speakers all around.. i reccomend pioneer 3-way speakers, they are cheap, and good quality / sound!

I just picked up those a couple months ago for my car, cheap and don't sound bad at all, also took the time to do some deadening here and there.
Peace,

holy crap this is word for word what my reply was going to be, minus the sub.

Let me know what you ender up getting, and how they sound. Because my situation turned out to be a blown under-seat sub. I might eventually upgrade my speakers as well though. Does anyone know what the stock subaru 'upgraded' speakers brand is? Is it pioneer?

The problem you may run into is, if you buy a speaker that is ratted say 25watts RMS and your stock head unit is only pushing out 5 watts.. you're under powering that speaker and will eventually over time blow it. Underpowered and overpowered are not good either way.

I wouldn't advise you to goto Best Buy or one of those mass population electronic stores because the those Pioneer/Sony/Rockford models are REALLY low end.

You could step inside a small audio shop and I'm sure they will have a lot of stuff that is really good and very well priced.

I dont know about the well priced.. because most of the audio stores around here are expensiiiiiive. I also dont think they will eventually blow from being underpowered..most of the time its overpowering that causes that problem, or just wear from time, dirt, sand.. etc. I would suggest getting some pioneer speakers on ebay, and do a little research about which ones you want before you buy them. They will be about 1/2 as much as anywhere else. I really dont think you need to worry about underpowering them though. I've had pioneer speakers in all my other cars, and i beat the ever living hell out of them, and they still worked great!

BTW. does anyone know what the stock headunit pushes out anyways? any guesses? Also, it must be split into 2 channels right?

The "upgraded" subaru speakers are most likely Panasonic.

this thing is rated at 80W it says it right next to word subaru and it makes pretty good sound with aftermarket speakers. i had front kenwood rated 220w each and rear sony 240W each and they are still not blown after year and a half of abusive underpowering..

That'd be 80w Max, total...not very impressive, but better than many stock decks out there.

A good set of speakers does work well with it, indeed.

<---had a component set of JLs with that deck for a while.

WRX takeoff speakers. Tonnes flying around the forums. Good bang for buck.

Are the stock 99 BD headunits rated for 80W or more? So is that split between 2 channels.. or 4?

if were kind enough to post at least model number of it then maybe we'll know which unit is stock in 99LGT

I've never blown speakers, even cheap ones.

Is there a slight chance you are listening to your music a bit loud?

my car came with a POS deck with POS Speakers and POS Wires.

The Deck is like 10 or 20w Output

My stock speakers were definately 30w max (Both deck and speakers were Clarion)

The day my car arrived on the island i cranked it up then all i heard was pfft when the bassline hit.

I'm pretty sure that'd be 80w for all 4 channels...so 20W x4 Max (it's definitely not an RMS rating, not for a stock deck)

Anyone know what's the depth on the factory speakers? I know they're pretty shallow...I've been meaning to put in my pioneer speaks but I have to get spacers for them me thinks...

Wiscon_Mark

My Polks fit okay, and I believe they're 2.5" deep.

Did you have to use spacers mark? I just measured one of the pioneers, it's around 2.5" depth from the magnet to the mounting bracket...I think that's right

my pioneers didnt need brackets either

No, I just used the stock mounting bracket, no spacers.

I also dont think they will eventually blow from being underpowered..most of the time its overpowering that causes that problem, or just wear from time, dirt, sand.. etc.

Do you ever do research before you blatantly throw out your views/opinions based on what you've experienced in life? Not trying to sound harsh but I'm really curious to know if you do research before you respond to any questions.

Having said that, let me explain to you what happens when you under power a speaker. A speaker that is rated at 50watts RMS and you're using a 20watt amp/head unit of continuous power will cause the voice coil to burn up faster than anything else. Basically because the source (head unit) is not supplying enough power (wattage) to the speaker's voice coil which it IS designed for thus causing the signal to distort (clipping.) That's when you hear clipping from your speakers. You won't potentially blow the speaker but you will cause damage to the voice coil which will result in undesirable output.

Maybe you enjoy clipping; I sure as hell don't.

I still think its highly unlikely to happen. Maybe in a lab environment case, but its not likely bound to happen from home use much. And plus... its going to clip at a certain point anyways if you crank it / under power it.. i dont think its going to make a difference in a stock unit anyways.. were not talking about studio audio here.. the car isnt even a perfect environment for sound anyways.. so whats the difference?

You're absolutely right. Your thoughts based on what is unlikely and likely are far more accurate than speaker specifications that are designed to run in their individual optimal range.

Key words 'optimal'.. you act as if underpowering them will instantly make them explode and burn up. It wont.. it probably wont even damage them. Sure.. they may not reach full potential as they would in a lab setting, but they probably wont clip or sound utterly horrible in a car either. Cars arent perfect sound environments anyways.. its not like its a soundproof studio.

Underpowering a speaker is only dangerous to it when you are trying to overdrive it with the power supplied. Overpowering gives you headroom to play with while tuning the system whereas you don't have that room to play with underpowering.

Both situations can easily ruin a speaker - utimately its the user who determines whether they are going to blow or not. It is also inevitable that if you use your equipment to its full potential it will eventually blow. Using it beyond its full potential - lol - makes it blow faster.

Of course environmental conditions, installation practices and plain old wear and tear come into play as well - especially with older equipment.

Yep the i think mine blew because i had the music blasting, mabe previous owners didnt listen to loud music but when i took them out the rubber around the coning tore.

This is not how i blew the stock speakers but i thought the only way underpowering your speakers is dangerious is when u have like an ipod hooked up to a cassette deck and you my or may not have a low power amplifier then you have the ipod volume maxed out and deck volume maxed out and the amplifer maxed out so you can get it to play loud, i learned that the hard way  all the maximum ness sends out bad signals.

Most car audio speakers have a pretty wide RMS range, It's doubtful that you could underpower them in any serious extent.
