View Full Version : oil in my intake? wtf!

Hey guys, i've been lurking around this site for a while, just never registered until now. Anyways I recently bought a 98 legacy gt 2.5 85kmi from a friend. And I've been noticing my gas mileage has been getting worse over time. Thinking it was a ignition problem, i went to change the spark plugs and noticed that there was some oil in my intake box and manifold. So now im thinking my valves are no good. Someone ever had this problem?? Any help is appreciated.

Any oil anywhere else? Like anywhere else it's not supposed to be?

not that i know of, i havent really taken anything apart on the motor yet except the intake. I'm thinking it might be the valves (needs a valve job) or one of the vacuum lines is somehow pulling in oil

It's possible that those vaccum lines are pulling oil in, that could mean a bad seal or gasket...

wouldnt that just be the oil from the pcv?

The PCV doesn't go into the intake, it's drawn into the intake manifold.

The EGR then. As in the two little tubes that go from your valve cover to the sides of the intake box.

Mine has that. Mostly because it saw a lot of high rpm use during the rallyx and autox season.

Could be a PCV valve problem. If it's not working properly, pressure builds in the crankcase, and can force oil into places it's not supposed to be. Like vacuum lines. It's cheap, easy to swap, and a good place to start.

I got small amounts of oil coming through the vaccume hoses on my GT, but that went away when I hooked each hose up to it's own bung on the intake. I have 4 vaccume hoses including the idle bypass.

Unless it's like a quart of oil, I woudln't worry about it. Grab some dish washing detergent and clean out any oil that stayed in the intake itself.

Do a oil catch can, I don't care who says otherwise. I did it to my Accord, PCV valve to intake mani and it catches oil. If someone says some shit to me that it's good for anything I'm gonna :roll: . I'll take some pics for you to get an idea. If I ever decide to get back into a Subaru (which I doubt because my Accord is super cool) I'll do it on that to.

I think $10 around that. I got it at Lowes, it's a filter for air tool compressor. Works pretty good. With all the other pieces it would be less than $18-$20.

yah i'm going to check out the intake gaskets soon...and possibly a jdm ej20t. We'll see what happens. Thanks guys
