got a 98 lgt wagon 4eat. daily driver, never going to be a racer. just looking to pep her up a little, maybe get a bit better mpg. i want to just do a couple of small, inexpensive things to her. i was gonna start off getting a cheap ebay intake (can get one for about $36), as well as buying a generic muffler for about another $27 and just having it welded on by a local shop, just to give her that subaru grumble that i love  . here are a couple of links to the stuff i'm looking at, opinions please, and remember, i don't care if it's fancy, if it's cheap and it will work, that's about all i care about. i'm not looking at throwing a shit ton of money into her.

First thing I would do is run new ATF + LubeGard ATF Protectant to lower AT temps. Then an ECU reset.

Then I would go the suspension route, and put in a new AT mount - like the harder one offered by Rallitek (?). Maybe new engine mounts - you can use takeoffs from a recent WRX or STi for good bang for buck.

De-snorkel, and use a good flowing panel filter. Exhaust - whatever you want for sound... 05+ WRX take off gives you the rumble with the nice OEM reliability.

Yep, Rallitek makes the 4EAT hardened tranny mount.

already did the ecu reset. don't care about suspension or tranny mount, just want to focus on the engine stuff for now. plus, i live in an apartment and have nowhere to do work like that on it. just simple bolt-on stuff that doesn't take long to install is what i'm going after. intake and exhaust are gonna be the first things i do, just wanted your guys' input on the stuff i was looking at.

I posted it in the engine/drivetrain section a long time ago...and I believe it's in the threads of note sticky.

will intakes that are made for an impreza or wrx work on my legacy? are they the same for the 2.2 and 2.5? i thought it was the same basic layout.

Not the WRX - turbo changes the intake routing.

but the N/A impreza of similar model years is relatively the same.

And yes, the EJ22 and EJ25 are pretty much the same too.

The only thing you'll want to avoid there, is the models with the intake box right over the throttle body (like the BE/BH)

Uh, the tranny mount takes about 30mins. Find a friend with jackstands and a driveway.

You're missing the point though - a firmer mount will direct more power to the wheels, rather than losing it through vibration. Engine mounts are a little tougher to do.

don't buy a new muffler, look around on forums for used wrx exhausts

I just went and picked mine up last night for free, its a 2.25 all the way through and will keep that nice suby grumble we all love

other cheap mode are the TB bypass mod (free) and a lightweight crank pulley(90 bucks)

Don't expect the ebay intake to bolt right on, there will probably be some fabrication involved, search the threads here and you'll see what i mean.
for the same price, i'd just get a K&N filter and pull out your snorkus from the fender, it makes a nice grumble

Skip the K&N, it isn't worth it.

true, i'm actually considering throwing mine out and going back to a paper filter the more info i read into it

that's what i heard. i figured for the same amount of $$$ i could have a cheap intake that would outperform a k&n. is stock wrx exhaust a straight bolt-on? meaning, i can just unbolt mine then put on the wrx one? all the bends/mounts are the same? wouldn't mind doing that if i could find one used local for cheap. just seemed like a bit more work than i wanted to do right now. figured a muffler would be the easiest way to get the grumble, and i'm kind of partial to the way an n1 muffler looks on a subaru backside as well.

No, a WRX is not a straight bolt on, but it is a high build quality, mandrel bent, a good diameter, and retrofitting a lightly used WRX/STi exhaust will be cheaper than buying bolt on parts for your Legacy.
